Month of October WISH Walkers and Runners Training Thread

I really like "don't overthink it. don't underestimate it."

We've been out of town for the last week. Wonderful relaxing time at my parent's lake house. It's completely different during the week. Fishing, boat rides and sleeping late. All good things end.

I am running the Kansas City half Marathon next weekend (10/16). Last weekend was 14 miles. Longest. Run. Ever. I was tired at the end, but could have kept going. Later though my thighs were sore. I ran Tuesday. The Ozark hills are wicked. I have tremendous respect for trail runners. I was running a gravel road and really had to focus on foot placement. There was ONE hill. OMG, it was like a ski jump. Once I got up it the rest was a slight incline and then the turn around and a gentler slope as it looped back to the base of Mt. Dang. I thought about going the other way, but was afraid to run down this hill.

Thursday evening we were back home and I ran on familiar sidewalks. I usually run early. This one started at 6:00 p.m. Completely different feel.

This morning was 6 miles. My thighs were hurting in the last mile. I like to think they are developing and getting stronger ; ) Muscle pain is new to me. I assume it's a combination of the long effort last weekend and the hill running on Tuesday.

Our dachshund thinks he's a sled dog, too. Easier to hold back, but I've walked other pullers and it can throw me off. Some day I'd like a jogging dog.

I use Gallowayesque intervals in my running. Tuesday is a steady run. Thursday is 3:1 speed (ha!) on some hills. Weekend LSD is 5:1. I am slow, but always improving. Average pace lately has been 11:45. I have heard of people improving their time using intervals. I am blessed to be injury free and attribute that to taking some breaks and keeping it to 3 days a week. I'm an adult onset athlete.

Just got in from a pretty good 3.38 mile run in Central Park. I learned that my Garmin will let me do intervals in time OR distance - so I have to try and figure out how far I'll run in each run/walk interval and estimate the number of reps I'll need to do. I guessed right today. We'll see if that continues. I did learn I can always overestimate the number of "laps" (intervals) and skip through them if necessary - so when I know the distance of the path I'll be on, I'll just do that.

Did Bob Harper's Yoga for the Warrior when I got home, so I feel all stretched and zen. (And I defy anyone to tell me yoga isn't a workout! I burned more calories in that 60 minute workout than I did in my 45 minute run!)

Later this afternoon/evening will be laundry - the laundromat will be crazycakes busy right now!

Hope everyone has a great day and weekend!

Usually I read the DIS during lunches M-T-W. But today I'm on the couch resting up from a 10 miler this morning. I'll try to keep the groans to a minimum

Ronda... I for one say 11's is NOT slow. I get there by being dragged not by personal choice LOL Dachshunds are sooo adorable! I have things for short legs and long bodies, seeing as I have a Corgi (with tail!). :) If I could have 3 dogs I'd want a dachshund. Every so often I get the crazy idea but then the 2 girls remind me why we have just the 2. LOL

Beth
. Running in Central Park? Ooooo Neat! Good luck with the garmin/intervals. I've been afraid to do that since the time I did use it and during what I thought was my rest/walk period the clock stopped! Then started again during the 'run' period. Stopped at the rest/walk and so on. I've been afraid to try it again LOL I have had it beep at me at certain distances or times. Which I might go back to if I remember to adjust it before the next long day. Intervals are great.

Carrie.... I'm just reading this so forgive me for not saying something while gasping earlier today. :rotfl: Oh there is no greatness here! It simply was case of cement surfing behind the crazed beastie! I'm sure I'll see that pace again because frankly there is no stopping her somedays LOL But that pace probably will be reserved for the 3 milers when (if) it I see it again.

Now regarding Kensington, Maura? were your ears burning today? Well, lets see, ummm...yea....NO! Still NOT flat! (someone pass the biofreeze!)

For the record Carrie whipped my tush. Thanks you 2 for making 10 miles a fun run and we'll just forget about that hill that was suppose to start at the tree. Considering you let me walk up most hills I'm willing to forget that one ;) :lmao:

What I'm grateful for today :) 10 miles with friends. Even if it was on hills.

Maura ... I hope your last long run goes smoothly!!!! You'll be great next weekend :cheer2:

I'm sure there is more but I'm sooo tired! LOL Ray is actually taking a nap, you see he miscalculated and a bit confused on the new park (for him) and instead of going out so far and turning back to just do his 6 miles. He ended up with the full loop of something like 8 or is it 8.5 miles?

Hope the weekend and miles are going well for everyone :)

Hi all.

I've been on some of the training threads in the past few months but hung out on the W&D thread mostly in the weeks leading up to the race.

After the race & wicked ITB & knee issues, I'm thinking of switching to Galloway. I'm wondering how others make out with it and if you can maintain a middle of the road pace with it. I'm not trying to win any races here, but I'm admittedly a bit competitive & would like to finish with the best time I can manage.

Have any of you worked with this method?

Thanks!
DW (Rose & Mike) and I did a modified Galloway. 1 minute walk every mile. It's not quite as many walk breaks as Galloway would recommend. We finished just over 11. It's about the same pace we ran a half in Labor Day weekend. We actually saw Galloway a couple of times. His group was right with us going into Animal Kingdom. They must of passed us somewhere, since they finished just ahead of us.
The real difference is the recovery. We took a short run Monday at WDW and a couple of runs since being back.
It was really good for W&D with the temp & humidity, DW had a heart rate monitor and you could see it drop during the walk.

Mike

Ronda Sounds like you're doing great. And I hear you about the muscle pain. Idon't think it ever really goes away. It just jumps from one place to another! But I think that "fatigue" is a good feeling--makes you appreciate that you worked hard. "Pain" on the other hand, is crummy. Also, I am a 3-day, adult-onset runner too. And it has gotten me through races that I never ever thought I would be able to do.

Beth Just let anyone who says yoga isn't a workout come to the Wednesday vinyassa class I go to. I am a sweating, trembling heap afterwards! But I love it.

Diane My ears did not burn, but I will finally concede that Kensington has hills! Glad your run went well.

I just finished my final LR before next Sunday's Freep Marathon. Went well and now it is time to hit the showers!

Maura

:lmao: over the conceding. It was BEAUTIFUL! The trees are amazing right now with color.

Congrats on the final long run! Rest up and enjoy today's beautiful weather :)

Diane ~ Yeah...I'm closer to Prospect Park in Brooklyn, but haven't explored it yet (only in the last few months has it been possible for me to get there without major subway changes...and I haven't bothered to figure their trails out yet). My running club (Front Runners NY) does Saturday morning fun runs in Central Park with bagels and stuff after, so I tend to do that for my long run days!

Maura ~ Yeah...Bob's dvd does the same thing. And I love it so much!!!!

Hope everyone has a good day! I'm on an SRD today, but I'm contemplating going to Coney Island to walk around near the water. Probably won't go today since it's a LONG subway ride to get there. Maybe tomorrow since I'm out of school (work) to celebrate the Native Americans finding Columbus wandering on their shores. :goodvibes

I think I like the sounds of your modified Galloway! How fast were you running & how fast were you walking?

Wow! What was that?! I ran this morning. Four miles. Right thigh felt a little pully, but it faded. All in all, good run.

Six hours later I'm sitting in a meeting. Don't remember what position my legs were in, but rose from the chair and felt really awful pain in my left knee. It felt like the leg was going to buckle. Bent was okay, straightening it out was really painful. It felt as though my knee, calf and into the top of my ankle were on fire. Hobbled down the stairs and returned to my desk. After 20 minutes or so the pain was gone. Now, of course, the knee feels weird. I've felt little niggles come and go, but this was scary. I saw this weekend's race disappear. I felt the last year and a half of work evaporate as if I could never run again. Tremendous emotions.

I'll commute by bike tomorrow and plan to do my usual run on Thursday.

Ronda

Ronda... that's scary! I hope your knee/leg feels better tomorrow and the bike ride goes smoothly. Sending pixie dust thoughts! :flower3:

Maura..I'm watching the weather for you LOL

Took Sunday off to recover from the 'rolling course' Monday I made it to the gym and did my usual machines and my newly added elliptical training for just over 20 minutes. It seemed a bit easier (??? HA!) but I think that might have been due to the rest day on Sunday. Tonight was another 5 miler with the puppy. Usual pace. I had thought to push a bit but between the walkers and a split second change in tonights course.

During our run we had a moment I knew you all would enjoy. There was of course yet another squirrel in a yard.Unlike it's furry friends who all rush to a tree or cross the street this little dude decided to run straight and center down the sidewalk ahead of us. Did this for a house and maybe a 1/2. So tonight it was a squirrel :squirrel:being chased by dog :dogdance:and a runner:tiptoe:being dragged by the dog that is chasing the squirrel. It was a kodiak moment but the camera probably would have been dropped by the dragged runner.

Happy trails!

Oh and I was told by some sweet older man walking his maltese size puppy that I need a SLOWER dog. I yelled back "Something I tell myself everyday!" :lmao:

Diane
It was a kodiak moment
Wait....there was a BEAR there, too? ;) I always think of Dug from the movie UP. One minute he's talking, and the next "squirrel!" It always cracks me up.

Ronda Hope your knee thing was just a freaky "I stood up funny" kind of moment. I always fixate on the little aches/pains before a race. It can get hard to turn the brain off.

Had my first pre-race nightmare last night. Very strange...I was one of only two people who seemed to make it to the start line before the race started. Then, the race went through a school (INSIDE) and I think in a grocery store before I finally ended up outside and saw a bunch of other racers. There was one older lady who said she was doing the half marathon, and I thought "she is going so much faster than me--how did she catch up"? Total nonsense, but there you go. No one ever said these things made sense!

Maura

For the record, Diane dragged me! You can ask my dh, I was behind! OMG, it was so awesome to do it together, though! I porceded to shower, get lunch and stand at a football game for 3 hours. Ouch! I was hurting through Monday!

Diane - lol about needinga slower dog! And thanks for forgiving me for teh one hill. :rolleyes1

Diane My ears did not burn, but I will finally concede that Kensington has hills! Glad your run went well.
Victory!!! Good luck this weekend!! WIll be thinking of you as we contemplate docking in Key West. :rolleyes1

Diane Wait....there was a BEAR there, too? ;) I always think of Dug from the movie UP. One minute he's talking, and the next "squirrel!" It always cracks me up.
:rotfl:

Ronda - Good luck this weekend!

Was not too sore after swimming Tuesday am. Woo hoo! Especially, as I was dad from doing stairs (laundry) before starting! :upsidedow Made my yoga instructor go easy on me this week, though. Heaven!

Forgive me. My brain is retaining very little. I leave for WDW/DCL/WDW in 3 days!!!!

Carrie your too kind :) I was thinking yesterday that next time you should tell me when you want to keep running to maybe a landmark. I can usually make it up an incline a little further than I want to. Course if it's that certain tree I'm not buying it! There were a couple of times I probably could have kept going a bit further but man when you see that incline going and going and GOING! The brain says STOP! even if the legs say "we can take it!"

Ronda ... how did it go this morning?

Maura :lmao: you didn't know we had bears in this area? Heck, those squirrels are eating enough that sometimes you don't know WHAT it it barrelling at you ;) And even though I haven't seen the movie, thanks to the commercials all I ever hear in my head is those dogs yelling SQUIRREL! Love the doggy pilots commercial and then them parachuting down afterwards. :)

Diane - I was dying! I don't usually take walk breaks, but was counting down the seconds and praying for you to say we could stop Saturday! We still ran faster than I would have without stopping, as I figured we would. Never gonna' live down that darn tree, am I? :rotfl: Trust me, I hurt myself with it as much as you!

Diane - it was fine. Great even. I had a headwind on the way in and got to keep it as a tailwind on the way home. Usually it seems to turn on me during the day. That's great because home is a little up hill all the way. The leg feels fine. I don't know what it was and I don't want it to come back.

Ronda

Nice four miles this morning. It was cool. 45* but no wind. Glad I grabbed a long sleeve tee. Felt good. Average pace was 11:4x. This was the last run before Saturday's race. It was a very careful run ; )

I love how the squirrells hold the Godzilla pose as people approach. No danger at all!

Ronda

Thought of you guys this morning. Was out for a run with the group, and squirrels kept crossing the trail. We headed across a bridge, and there was one on the bridge directly in front of us. I was curious to see what he was going to do, but he jumped onto the tree hanging over the bridge to get out of our way. We usually call out whatever hazards are in front of us, and there were several "squirrel" calls today. :rotfl:

Did 10 this morning. Like Ronda, the temp was around 45 and beautiful. Stuck with short sleeves, but could have used the gloves for the first couple of miles. Crossing my fingers that it will be like that for MCM.

Maura - Will be thinking of you tomorrow!

Jackie

What a disappointment. I ran the Kansas City half marathon this morning. The first eight miles were great with a 12:12 pace and the hard part is behind me. Between 7 and 8 I felt a little pull in my right quad - going downhill, running at the side of the road - all kinds of reasons for it, right? The temps were still a little cool and I thought it would work out. Others have. I saw Sue soon after the 8 marker and should have gone home with her. The next five miles the pain got worse and I walked the last five miles. My pace ballooned to 17:28.

By the finish I was making so many compromises with my gait the leg hurt from hip to toe. They ran out of medals. I limped to the truck and headed home. DGF had two bags of ice waiting. Ten minutes in an ice bath and a good lunch helped a lot. I've iced it a couple of times this afternoon.
This wasn't the "what was that" leg. The injury is really out of the blue and disappointing.

I've never had a running injury. I don't see any swelling so I think it's a strain. It's muscle pain in the lower half of the inner thigh. A lot of quad strain information describes the pain "front and center". It hurts when I get up from being seated and when going up and down stairs.

Take it a day at a time they say. Okay.

ETA: The weather was amazing. 50 at the start. Light breeze that picked up as the sun came up. Overall gorgeous.

Ronda

Hi all. I posted once on the September thread, and then, have been totally MIA. Sorry. I have enjoyed the adventures with dogs and squirrels, though. Oh, and the bear. I have had to stop running with my dog due to immediate stops and zigzagging all over the place. He walks instead. But, he can't keep up with me anyway! :thumbsup2 (it pays to get a small dog).

As Jackie knows, I ran my first ever 14 miler today. I'm training for Goofy, but have never done a full before, so, from here on out, those LRs are all new to me. Next Saturday, is 18! That's a lot! yikes!
