Monsters After Dark question

Ok, we've finally pulled the trigger and bought our tickets for an October trip!

Guardians of the Galaxy is my favorite ride, so I am super excited for Monsters After Dark. But my son has never ridden GOTG and has been too scared to ride in the past. So a few questions:

- Does just the ride part change or are there different elements in the queue? Would it be worth going through the queue for someone who doesn't ride?
- If he does want to try and ride (he says he does), is it more intense than the regular ride? Are the ride mechanics the same? (same length/number of drops?).
- Do you feel like it is a not-to-be-missed experience compared to the regular ride? We likely won't be visiting during Halloween again. I know I could probably watch some videos to judge, but I'm trying to maintain surprise for myself.

For reference, he has been through the regular ride queue twice. Once he decided to head for the exit once we got upstairs and the second time he panicked and had to have them release the seat belts right before the ride was to start.

From the opinion of someone who isn’t scared of the ride and quite enjoys it (so not your sons experience) I think MaD is the BEST version of the ride. I absolutely love the music they have playing during it, it’s such high octane energy and it pairs perfect with the drops (which are unique to the song but not that different from the normal drops). Plus, the monster is great!

That being said, if your son was scared of the original version of the ride, he probably isn’t going to be less scared during this version. The queue does change during the overlay - instead of the whimsical, fantastical vibe of the collection, it’s ominous and foreboding, with sirens, glitching voices, and red warning lights flashing to indicate that the monsters let loose are destroying the building. It’s more off-putting, So waiting in that line might put him on edge. But it is unique and different, and if you like the ride I think you’ll probably like the overlay too. Hopefully your son IS able to ride it!

He's more scared in theory since he hasn't ridden it yet. He gets nervous about drops and was worried a lot about Incredicoaster, Matterhorn, Splash, and Space Mountain in the past. But he loved all of those once he rode them. But I do think Guardians is in a whole other category. I suspect he will love it if he can get past the fear. We'll see.

He probably will love the queue. He is all about Halloween and spooky things at the moment and is very excited to try the different rides with Halloween overlays.

But even if he doesn't ride, I certainly will!

Monsters After Dark is amazing. The queue, preshow, etc are completely different from the normal version. I’ll just say what happens in the queue is comical and you should not miss it! The ride itself as far as the drops go are about the same intensity as the normal version but the music and what’s happening on the screens might be scarier for him. Overall it’s absolutely a not-to-be-missed experience! I think it’s worth going to Disneyland during Halloween time just for this!

You are making me even more excited about this trip! I was wanting Christmas, but DS got so excited for Halloween, so he won out. Now I'm getting excited too.

If you use Genie+/DAS do you miss any of the cool things in the queue?

The only thing I can think of is that if you’re going through the lightning lane you’ll likely be moving through the first room faster than standby so you might not see all the details in there unless LL is backed up. However the merge point is at the preshow just like the normal version and everything after that is the same regardless of which line you went through

When we have done MAD, they merged the queue entering the building so you don't miss anything like you would for GOTG.

Tip for first time riders, don't hold on to the handles. Just puts more strain on your shoulders. Makes it worse. Hold on to someone else if you need to :)
