Monorail Crash: Retire the colors?

WOW!!! My friend in Brasil knew about it right away!! Wonder why the news didn't travel across the pond as quickly as it did to South America?!

Maybe a tour group from Brazil at WDW that relayed the information back to Brazil (letting family know they were fine?).:confused3

I think people fail to put this accident into perspective.

Think about how many people travel in and out of WDW every day- probably the equivalent of a small city (maybe not so small!).

For all those people, it seems to me to be one of the safest places on earth!

Some of these threads are a bit too drama for me.

I hate to say it- but it reminds me of the pictures of these people just SOBBING for days over Michael Jackson- never met him- just melodrama to the extreme.

An accident. Its over- move along.

Seriously, since this thread started 10 children across the country have been seriously abused. THAT is a HUGE tragedy.... this was an accident.

QFT!!!

Finally someone who can see the situation for what is is. Drama on the board is crazy.

While all the points PPs made are valid, I can see where the OP is coming from. I would rather not know that the monorail I'm in was THE one. Silly maybe but the thought gives me rhe heeby jeebies. So adding two new colours and then shuffling the colours would be great for me.

However, they aren't going to do that and even if they did, it wouldn't take long for word to get around about which monorails are the former pink and purple.

So, while I see where you're coming from, OP, I won't be sending a letter.

I got into a car accident and I never asked the automakers to retire blue cars.

That's not a good analogy. We're talking about riding the exact vehicle that was involved in the crash - not one that just happened to be the same colour.

Most of the deaths at disney were from pre-exsiting medical conditions that the guest were unaware of. I've seen a lot from heart failure and such.. I haven't read much about physical injury.. As for the colors being retired, I don't see disney doing this at all. Nice thought....

Disney probably wont retire the colors, but that is a nice thought and its sweet you went out of your way to try and honor the victim a little bit.

And for those who are saying "its over get over it and move on", i think that is cold. If it was your son and daughter who died at 21 years old would you say "oh get over it, plenty of other things happen in the world"? No. If it bothers you that people may be over reacting about it, ignore the posts and don't read the threads. But the CM's are what make Disney magical, and it is a tragedy that occured only three days ago. The chatter will die down eventually but until then, people are going to want to talk about it.

I don't think riding in the front of any monorail will be an option for quite some time.

I completely agree & that is disappointing. I love watching my daughter stare in wonder out the front window, feeling like she's flying!

I also got my car fixed and drove it again for several years.

It's a nice thought, but it's seriously over reacting. So many accidents have happened at Disney, many of which got no memorial at all. The Primal Whirl accident was truly a tragedy. This is a tragedy. People dieing of cancer is a tragedy. Deaths caused by car accidents are tragedies. What people are saying, this is one death out of many that have happened this last year, month, week, and some people even died today.

Some of you people honestly make me wonder if you would even care half as much if it wasn't the monorail that killed him. CM's are at the end of the day, normal people doing their normal job. I don't put them up on this pedestal that so many people on here do. I was more sad their a family lost a son and brother, rather than WDW losing a CM. Sadly, I see more sadness placed on Disney than the family.

I fully understand that this is a hot topic and that people will talk about it, but there are other people who have diffrent opinions on the topic and you need to respect that, just as we respect others. I have yet to hear any negativity towards the victim in this thread. The most negative this I have heard is that the idea was an over reaction and then the explained why the felt that way. That is diffrent opinion, not cold at all, and I'm sorry if you feel that way.

In defense of the idea, the National Hurricane Center retires the names of storms that caused mass devestation. Can you imagine if there was another Hurricane Katrina or Andrew? Personally I would not be suprised if Disney did change the colors, as for years anytime someone with knowledge sees it they will think "thats the one in the crash." Disney loves to sweep stuff under the rug, and changing the colors would certainly help do that...

That said, I dont think they should:thumbsup2

The key word in your defense of the idea is "mass." Many hurricanes have existed and caused significant damage and taken several lives -- and their names remain on the rotation. Usually their names are not retired unless the damage and/or death toll is, as you said, massive.

This accident was certainly tragic, and the damage to a couple of cars looks extensive, but the accident wasn't massive. In order for the hurricane analogy to work, something like having one derail in the middle of the day and 200 people getting killed would have to happen. That would be massive.

With that said, I do feel from where the original post is coming from, and your analogy does have some merit to it (I actually liked it despite my criticism), but like you, I don't think they should do this. On the other hand, considering that those two trains will have to be repainted anyway after they are repaired, it is still something to consider.

Of course, as others have mentioned, whether or not to change the colors is secondary to figuring out what happened and how the scenario can be prevented from recurring. My prayers go out to the family and friends of the young man that died.

Like i said, if you feel people are over reacting, do not read threads which are obviously related to the monorail accident. Common sense. Also, i do not think anyone is trying to imply that this is the only tragedy that has every happened in the world, And that someone dying of Cancer isn't a tragedy. I am a Hematology-Oncology Nurse, i see people die of cancer every day i work. That does not mean that this young man dying at age 21 is something that shouldn't be talked about. If the OP wanted to write a letter to Disney, and start a thread here, why can't she just do that without people like you coming on here and shooting it down? I also highly doubt the only reason people care is because it happened on the Monorail, and not because a young man died. That is a very charged accusation to make.

If it were my son or daughter who died on the monorail, I would be angry and feel violated with dozens of strangers acting as though my son or daughter were theirs, and talked and argued about it endlessly on Disney message boards. I'd wish that they would shut up and mind their own business and let me get through my grief on my own.

All of this discussion feels like a bunch of strangers showed up uninvited at a funeral and started acting as though they were members of the family.

I'm saddened by Justin's tragic and untimely death, and I hope that his family never sees these ridiculous threads full of strangers acting as though they just lost a member of their own families.

I guess by posting in this thread, I'm as guilty as everyone else. I'll leave now, and say just this in parting:

I go to WDW every year on vacation. If I ever die in a tragic accident at WDW, I ask you all to butt out and leave my family alone to deal with their grief in there own way. Give my family the privacy that they will need to deal with the loss and shock, and MYODB.

His name was Austin, not Justin. And why don't YOU butt out. Apparently you have never heard of freedom of speech.

I think we are paying our respects to Austin (not Justin). I would hope his family would be encouraged by the support and proud of their son that he has so many wanting to honor him. I don't think anything here has invaded their privacy.
I have friends who talk about and treat my kids as their own. I see that as a good thing that they care so much.
Ya know it's pretty telling when someone dies and no one cares. I don't think it's butting out or MYOB but a picture of the deceased's friends or lack thereof. Hope you have loved ones to comfort your family when you pass. You can never have too many caring freinds.

I am HIGHLY offended by that comment. I won't go deep with it, but in the future please be careful of comments like that. You don't know why is going through the whole cancer process in their lives. Right now I have a loved one going through it, so yeah... just be careful in the future.:goodvibes

Why are we even talking about Austin? We are so off topic. This is about changing the colors on the monorail.

I think the OP was honest in her email to Disney. I think it was in the right place, I just don't think they should change the colors. There are some people who will remember his death forever. I know that when I go to DLR and ride BTM I am reminded of death when I see the town that they crashed into. Why make EVERYBODY remember that? Why make a memorial that remind people of the tragedy that happened while they are at the happiest place on earth? If anything is to be done, I say Disney makes a special place in Disney separate from the parks where Disney remembers the CM's and guests that died there. It would be a nice way to keep their memory alive at Disney. It would honor everybody who died. Not a grave or anything, but like a hall filled with their pictures and a little sentiment. It's much more personal, and in the memory of that people than taking away the monorail colors.

(btw, they already have the Coral Monorail, Austin said so in the video posted in one of his threads.)

OrangeCat, please stop... This is a discussion, meaning a collecting of people talking about their feelings on a topic. You are only wanting people who share your opinions in here, and bullying everyone else. Nothing inappropriate is being said at all. Freedom of speech works both ways (and besides, there are rules on this board, so it does not necessarily apply here).

? I said that i highly doubt anyone was trying to imply that Cancer isn't a tragedy, because of a what a previous poster said. There is nothing there to take offense to, i was acknowledging that indeed, everyone knows it is a tragedy, and i know as well as anyone being an oncology nurse and losing a young daughter to leukemia.

I read it wrong, lol!!! My mouth actually dropped when I read it the way that I thought I did. I just re read it and I can see what you meant to say.

drama drama drama, lol. I think you and I can end that conversation now. :goodvibes

Now, can we get on topic of changing the colors on the monorail. Not cancer (my fault), not attacking others, not Austin's death, not anything, but changing the colors. Agree, disagree, elaborate.

Agree:goodvibes
I am very sorry to hear about what you are going through. It's a terrible thing.

And i didn't mean to bully people, i just felt bad for the OP, she only meant well and people were acting as if it was weird and out of line.

Soo.. back to the topic of Monorail Colors..

His name was Austin, not Justin. And why don't YOU butt out. Apparently you have never heard of freedom of speech.

I am terribly sorry that I typed the wrong name in my post. Austin was his name, and I was foolish enough to type the wrong name when referring to him.

Freedom of speech? I can quote the First Amendment to you without having to look it up:

"Congress shall make no law respectig an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free excercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or the right of the people to peacably assemble, or to petition the government for a redress of grievances."

What has my disgust with people gawking on the net at the death of a young man and acting as though they were all his best friend when they never even heard of him until he died, got to do with freedom of speech? I'm not calling for censorship, I'm calling on everyone to stop fawning over Austin as though he had been their best friend and little brother, and give his family and friends a chance to greive and heal without a bunch of hoopla from strangers.

I think we are paying our respects to Austin (not Justin). I would hope his family would be encouraged by the support and proud of their son that he has so many wanting to honor him. I don't think anything here has invaded their privacy.

It's always a good thing when people care about you, and always a good thing when your friends and loved ones comfort your family if you die.

But you miss a very important point - WE ARE NOT AUSTIN'S FRIENDS OR FAMILY, WE ARE STRANGERS. Most of us never met him or even heard of him before his death (with the exception of one of the regulars on the Photography board who had the priviledge of meeting Austin a couple of weeks before he died).

I'll never condemn anyone for being saddened by the death of a stranger, or for having concern and compassion for the deceased's surviving family and friends. But acting as though you are someone's friend when you never met them is creepy and invasive.
