Moms to Be Part 3

Lets see... Im at the top and im 1cm and "soft"... so... it may be a while.

My dr will induce next Wed if I want... however, Im not too keen on the idea of pitocin (and possibly cervadil)... so... this baby might cook until they wont let him cook any longer/he comes out on his own. I would start "walking" but yesterday I fell down some steps at Dhs grandparents and landed myself in Triage getting monitored for 4 hours-- and have a messed up ankle pretty bad. LOL. So.. in leu of walking, I suppose ill have to start eating pineapple and rolling around on a ball or something..lol

Maggie - Walmart has a yoga ball for $6. It's white and can hold up to 250 lbs. Supposed to help open the pelvis. I heard raspberry tea works well too! (GNC carries herbal caffeine free.) I'm not game for Pitocin or Cervadil either - luckily my midwife will NOT induce prior 42 weeks. (Yes, you heard that correctly - 42 WEEKS.) So my little one will be cooking for a while too!

We are going to the local fair this weekend so my walking will occur somehow. I've been wanting fried swiss cheese on a stick for a whole week (and this baby better not make me miss getting it on Sunday!!!)
My back has been killing me at work - I almost have to sit like I'm reclined in my chair to get comfortable now. If the yoga ball helps at home, that might be coming to work with me as my new "chair".

It's scary reading "9 days to go" in my ticker! :scared:

1 centimeter and 60% effaced and +2. Still got a ways to go.

Hey - it is progress!! Even just 1 cm, is better than none!!

In FL you HAVE To be induced in a hospital by 42 weeks, if you get that far. SO where I go they start doing natural induction stuff (breastpump, primerose oil, etc. at 41 weeks if you need).

Maggie - so sorry you feel!! That sounds pretty bad! Hopefully your ankle gets better soon! I bought a ball at walmart too - got one that has a workout DVD (Think it is the gold's gym one) - I just sit on it, DH has been exercising on it. If my back ever hurts I sit on it for a while and it gets better - I LOVE That ball. Even though they have birth balls at the Birth Center - if I remember I'll bring my own because I just love it!

Amen to that! I have a yoga/pilates ball that i used to exercise with that ive rocked on quite a bit this pregnancy-- will be using it a lot in the days to come. Ahh our fair doesnt start for about another week-- so if i make it that long ill have to go and indulge myself in the puke fest of food as well. LOL

42wks holy cow!! My dr wont let you go passed 41 before she absolutely induces you. So im hoping for a baby to come on his own. Maybe with me falling yesterday it kind of shook him up and he will decide to start moving on out of there!

Here is a website I saved a while back... might be interesting for ya!

Haha you are right-- 1cm is progress. Although when you are this far along-- you start to wonder if the dr isnt just saying that to give you some kind of hope that something might possibly be taking place. LOL. 1cm, while is something-- is basically nothing at this point! lol... I think my dr just wants to see me smile..lol. Who knows..:confused3 Lets hope for even more progression at my apt on Tues.

My ankle is really sore today and i am barely able to walk on it- but time will shake it. :)

I was born three weeks early because of a "fall". My parents went to a golf outing and it rained while they were there. By the time they left, mud puddles were everywhere and apparently my mom hit one just right and her legs came out from under her and landed on her tail bone. Ground was soft, she wasn't hurt any. By the time they got home (10 minutes up the road) and she walked in the door her water broke. I was born 4 hours later.

Anyone having contractions? I still have no clue on what I should be feeling...some have told me it's a tightening, others said it's like cramps. With my back hurting so bad I'm starting to wonder if that's whats gonna happen to me, but it's only one sided so I'm still not sure.

HAHA you are my laboring sister! Im with you-- still dont know what contractions feel like. In Triage last night I asked the nurse if it was odd that I was 38.5 weeks (just like you) and not feeling contractions. She said I was having a few but they were so so minor that I probably didnt feel them. Ofcourse I didnt- thats why I said I didnt know what they felt like. I have told my dr about my back cramps and she said if they are cramps and not pain then thats probably early contractions and they should eventually spread to the stomach. I keep hearing the "tightening" but my gosh-- the baby is rolling around and when he shifts his butt from the left to the right, my stomach feels tight. LOL... and its tight anyway- theres a big baby in there and not a lot of room. I wish there was a better way of explaining it other than "tightening". But they say when you have the real deal you will know. Maybe we will be blessed and not have to experience braxton hicks-- or then again, maybe thats not such a blessing-- bc we may actually need them!

My grandmother delivered my uncle after a fall as well. My back is cramping up bad tonight, but ive been having menstrual crampy feelings for a week or two now. They are in my legs... my lower stomach, in my back, etc. The problem is i dont normally have menstrual cramps in my stomach during my menstrual cycle-- i only get them in my legs. So when you hear "They feel like menstrual cramps"...lol and you dont have them in your stomach (only in your legs) again, you have no idea what those feel like.

LOL Im glad im not alone!

ETA: The cramps in my back are one sided as well-- always on my right. But then again, the baby is always on the right.

Thank goodness I'm not alone! I get the same thing - the 'oh, you'll know when it happens' speech - but come on! Most of my pain is in my back; and then whenever the kid moves from side to side, so yea, we are totally in the same boat.

Thanks again for the website!

Hi ladies! I can't believe my little man is 2 weeks old already! He is a really good baby. Nursing didn't work out so well so he is on formula but is doing well. I panicked and took him to the dr. yesterday thinking something was wrong with him and it turned out to be gas! I don't think I'll ever stop worrying.

So here's my labor story. At about midnight on Friday morning I started feeling contractions but I had been having them for a few days and they weren't too strong. About 2 a.m. they started feeling stronger and I couldn't sleep so I thought I would time them and they were coming 4 -5 minutes apart. My dr. had said when they are 4/5 minutes apart and lasting 1 minute or more for an hour to go to the hospital. Well after about 30 minutes they started coming about 2 minutes apart at times so I said we had better get ready just in case so I took a shower and we headed to the hospital. It was 4 a.m. when I got there and they monitored me and the baby in triage for an hour. In the hour I hadn't made any progress so they said I was certainly in labor but I had two choices, I could walk for an hour and a half and see if there was any change, or we could go home and wait it out. We decided we were there so we would walk. At 7 a.m. I went back and had progressed from 2-4 centimeters so they said they were keeping me. We got admitted at 8:30 and they broke my water and started me on pitocin... the midwife breaking my water was the WORST!!! It hurt way more than I was expecting. After that I had about 4 contractions on top of each other and I asked for the epidural (even though I was planning on doing it natural - that went out the window). About 40 minutes later I had an epidural, it was around 10 a.m. by that time. Around 11a.m. they checked me and I was 10 and ready to push except I couldn't feel anything so I had to wait an hour for it to wear off enough to feel to push. Around 12 p.m. I was really feeling the contractions and needing to push and waiting on the midwife! She finally showed up and in about 10 pushes Landon was here at 12:36 p.m. All in all I spent 4 hours in active labor at the hospital. I was so glad he came quickly and safely.

Skylarr- so glad everything went well and you really had no complications. Why did they give you pitocin though? If you were laboring on your own... im not sure I understand the pitocin part unless they just wanted to speed things up. If you hadnt have had the pitocin you may have actually been able to go without the epidural. I hear it is very hard to go without pain meds if you have to take something to hard as pitocin (although Dhs cousin had to be induced, have pitocin, and couldnt have an epi because of her low iron-- and i can promise she delivered her very last baby that day!).
Im glad you are doing well. Sorry breastfeeding didnt work out! Im sure Landon is such a doll!!

I've heard the same thing about the pitocin - though sometimes Nubain can cut the extra pain that it causes...
Sounds like an easy birth Skylarr! I hope mine is that easy!

Sorry to butt in! But I know that once your water breaks you have to deliver within 24 hours, preferably sooner, because otherwise you risk infection in both you and the baby. Maybe her dr. felt pitocin was the best option since they broke her water for her and they wanted to be sure she wouldn't be in active labor for too long after that point.

I know when my cousin had her baby a few months ago her water broke on its own but her contractions didn't really start till a few hours later. They let her labor on her own for too long before they finally gave her pitocin to speed things up and then once her daughter was born she ended up having to stay in the hospital for a week due to infection.

But they broke her water and started pitocin at 8:30am. They didnt really give her the opportunity to labor without the pitocin (and she was at 4). Maybe had they just broke her water she wouldnt have needed the pitocin? I dont know.. im just trying to figure it all out.

True. I don't know either, it was just a thought. Perhaps they were using the pitocin just to be absolutely sure she would progress in time? I know all doctors feel differently about using it so I'm not sure what his reasoning was. I was just giving a possibility as to why they did it that way :)

Melissa, glad you had such a quick and safe delivery. Come join us on the newest mom's thread when you get a chance! :goodvibes

Thanks! He has been such a great baby so far! On Monday we had a photographer come to the house and take his photos so I can't wait to see them! It was so adorable! They took photos with him and angel wings and all sorts of props.

His birth was pretty easy and I am very thankful for that. I have NO real idea why they started pitocin. I know I probably should have asked but it was one of those things when they are just doing so many things to you at once and it doesn't click in your mind to ask. I didn't even want the iv, I asked for a hook up only because I was already having so much swelling I didn't want the fluids but they said I had to get it because they were starting me on pitocin?? I was certainly having contractions so no idea. I think near the end of them monitoring me they weren't as strong but by then I was at a 4 so they wanted them to pick back up, that's my best guess. The pitocin did make things SO much stronger, I wasn't even in the slightest pain until then. It was like instant pain after that! They didn't offer nubain to me but I knew I needed something. Had I known things were going to go so fast I could have done without the epi but in my mind I was thinking I would be in labor for 10 more hours. In the end it worked out because everything did go quickly and easily but I have heard of some people have bad side affects from getting an epidural.
