Moms to Be Part 3

Today has been a rough day. I woke up at about 6am with some mild cramps. I timed them and I was getting about 4 an hour... Finally I called the dr. at about 1 because they weren't going away and my lower back hurt the same way it feels when I have my period. The dr. told me to go straight to the hosp and I had to go the labor and delivery rooms and sit on a monitor for about an hour. They determined that I'm dehydrated and needed to learn to relax. I don't know how to relax.
I'm pretty embarrased because it was nothing and now everyone at work will know, but DH said that it was better that I went because if I had ignored it and something was actually wrong, then I would feel bad.

I have decided that the first things I'll be packing in my hospital bag are socks (because my feet were freezing) and a pillow of my own and a cute bath robe. (Because I wasn't too thrilled with having my whole butt hang out of the ugly robe)

Welcome and congratulations!

I am so happy for your good news and hearing your baby's heartbeat after going through so much :)

I did progesterone for 14 weeks and they were messing and made me really tired but so worth it!
I called them my sleeping pills.

We have sailed 10/02, 12/04, 12/06, and 10/08, although the only time I was part of a cruise meet thread was for the 10/08 DD sailing. I did pop in to the 9/08 DD every once in awhile because it was the one almost immediately after drydock and the DD before ours - If you were on the DD in 9/08 - that is where you probably saw me!

It has been a bumpy ride... Although I have help this time around. I am on ******l suppositories of progesterone twice a day. I have been affectionately been calling these my uterine steroids!

I am satisfied wearing the hospital gown simply cause of all the, hmm, fluids, that tend to be present in those first few days so I have no desire to wreck my own stuff.

ITA
I had my first daughter in the hospital and had no idea how messy things would be for the first few days. Bring old undies or wear the hospital mesh ones. I would wear the gowns too instead of wrecking my own. I bled a lot after DD#1 and would drip onto the floor. Sorry to be TMI but nobody ever told me all that stuff. Socks are a must. I remember being really cold after the birth. Maybe some vitamin waters or something to keep you hydrated. Camera. Change for the phone if you are in a place where you can't use a cell phone.

DD#2 was born at home (planned). Afterwards we had peri pads in the bed for "leakage", pads I soaked with water and froze as I was expecting to be really sore down there. I had a few stitches after but recovery was very quick. About a month or so later I was cleaning the freezer out and found my bags of frozen maxi pads...LOL

Personally I would take as little as possible because the hospital will have a lot of stuff. Plus whatever you take has to be hauled home when you are tired, sore and have a baby to bring with you.

Lindsay - I am glad that you went to get checked out too. I am also very prone to dehyrdration and just doing too much in general. I try so hard to drink all day but I usually don't get enough in until late in the day and that just messes up my sleeping. Almost peed my pants getting to the bathroom last night because of how Baby Ryan was laying!!!

I was also amazed at all the "fluid" going on after delievery and I had a C-Section! The first time they made me get up off the bed ... I told DH to leave the room just in case and I am glad I did!! After the first day I did wear my own clothes just because it was more comfortable and I was able to get up easier. I also brought a new cheap nightgown to walk the halls with and glad I did that too. I will bring that same one again. I also brought my own pillow and glad I did. I didn't use ANYTHING I brought for labor ... nor did I use anything in the diaper bag other than a paci and the coming home outfit. Not worth dragging the diapers and such around.

I ordered DS's new swing today. I wanted the Fisher Price Little Lamb one and Kohl's has it on sale today at $107 with an additional 20% off code of Extra20. So it was down to $86ish. Not bad ... The only downside to this one is the lack of AC adapter but we will see how that works. Better than the $149 price at BRU!! I ended up getting the swing, two soothie pacis, two avent pacis, a sleep and play and a pair of PJ's for Alexander for $110 shipped!!

Dmickey - we got the same swing! It was just too cute to pass up.

Thanks for all the advice on what to pack, ladies! I'm thinking of packing sweat pants, a tank top, nursing bra, and zip up sweatshirt - and if I choose to just stay in the hospital gown the whole time, I can wear that as my going home outfit right?
I have the going home outfit for the baby packed - that was easy! So I just need to pack stuff for DH since this is our first so I get to keep him with me the whole time!
And then toiletries, camera, the what to expect book (more for the chapter on nursing than anything else i guess), I threw in a deck of cards cuz I keep reading that we need stuff to entertain us during downtime - but I really don't think we'll end up using it!
I don't know why I'm stressing so much. My parents live 5 minutes away from the hospital and I know my mom will be back and forth a lot so if we need anything, I'm sure it won't be a problem for her to get it. I guess the stressing over packing is my way of nesting without having to get off the couch :rolleyes1

cappygirl,

"downtown" LMAO. Let us know if you have any!

Don't stress over packing or forgetting something. The hospital will have most of what you need and your family can bring the rest when it is time to go home.

I have learned that babies have their own agenda. With my first I had everything planned. None of it worked out and it was a gong show.
Second one, my labour came on fast and strong and baby was born an hour later. We had the fridge stocked for the midwives, a portable bed for one of them to rest on. When the midwife got here I was grunting like an animal and baby was born 40 min after she arrived. This time if we get to full term and everything is a go for a home birth she is going to come over earlier as she doesn't trust me...LOL

Add me to the list of mommies who didn't use any labor stuff. Well, with my 2nd I didn't even bring anything, but he came so early and so fast I was very unprepared. I was literally packing his bag on my way out the door and am just lucky I had his stuff washed and put away so I could find it easily.

With my 1st I did bring a birthing ball that I used for awhile, but then they couldn't get an accurate read on my daughter's heartbeat so I was basically confined to the bed at that point cause there was only 1 position where we could hear her heartbeat. Turns out she had a partially prolapsed cord (between her head and shoulder) so unless I was in a specific position, her cord was getting crushed.

This time I know I won't use anything, and given how fast my son was born, the idea of downtime seems sketchy at best too. I did have some with my daughter, but only because I got an epidural and they stalled my labor to do an amnioinfusion (she had meconium that they needed to clear out as much as possible). If they didn't do that for 2-3 hours, she would have been out much sooner, within about 5 hours of getting to the hospital. My son was out in an hour and 10 minutes from the time I arrived at L&D.

Lindsey - Better to be checked out and be okay than not and have something go wrong. Don't feel badly about it, at least now you know you're okay.

I'm off to my OB appt now, which I am hoping will be quick and uneventful.

Hi everyone! I am back on the Moms-to-Be thread after 3 years. I am expecting my second vettechicklet! We saw the heartbeat and got a sweet picture of him/her today. My due date is August 21, but will go the week before for a scheduled c-section. It's fun being able to pick your baby's birthday. :thumbsup2

Anyway, once school is back in I won't be able to post much but I'll be lurking. Glad to be back!!

Congratulations Vettechick!!

Kiki Mouse: I'm just going by what the book tells me, but I'm a bit skeptical about down time myself!

Justhat - good luck at the doctors!

Congrats Allison and welcome back! I was here a little over 3 years ago also with baby #2, who was due just about a week after yours is. It's so neat to find out your are pregnant this time of year, a great gift. Love your first photo!

OB visit was pretty fast and uneventful, which I judge by how much I have to pay in the parking lot. $7 as opposed to $13 is always nice. So my OB who has never suggested weekly visits for me in the past said it would be wise to start them now, so I attempt to schedule them when I leave and get this, next available appt is 1/21!! I can be about 98% sure the baby will be here by then. So I have that appt scheduled and they are supposedly calling me back later today about the week of the 11th. Next week, apparently, is out of the question. Now, that is totally fine with me as I see little point to going to just chat with my dr, but I realized after I left that I need the GBS test done and I am not sure that it will happen, or if it does that the hospital won't have my results in when I deliver (which is what happened with my son, so I had to get IV antibiotics even though I didn't have GBS). Oh well. My OB was looking at my current weight/total gain and said "So okay, it's on a rapid rise, but I have to say, you don't look remotely close to your recorded weight, so at least you wear it well. You must look really skinny when not pregnant!" If only I can get back to my old weight in a reasonable amount of time with this kid (unlike my 2nd where it took a full 2 years and a lot of effort) I'll be satisfied.

The bright side is that I came home to find that the bathtub, diaper bag, auto mirror toy thing, and changing pad cover outside the door. Totally made my day, even though now it means I need to find space for the stuff!

ETA: Cappygirl - If you have an induction or you get to the hospital early in labor and get an epidural, I bet you'll that downtime they speak of. My SIL, cousin, and friends who delivered in the past year all were posting on Facebook during labor. I can't imagine that as I never really had that sort of free time, or maybe pain-free time ;) , but it does happen!

And my last pitch of the year for this. I'm guessing I have 3 weeks from now till I have this kid, so someone, anyone, has to take over this list. With all the new additions lately I am sure someone is eager to take it on! It's super easy cut and paste work, I promise!

Sometimes I wonder about the intelligence of my OB team. One day they're considering me high risk, the next they think I'll be ok followed by the regular team, then the next they say they only want senior doctors and not residents following my pregnancy. Ugh. Will you people please make up your minds? Seriously, this is just frustrating!

On a good note, we have our level 2 ultrasound scheduled for Feb 10th, and have a regular OB appt on Thursday of next week. Hoping we can hear a heartbeat then!

Had a dream last night that my water broke....unfortunately, it was only a dream!!

So next week is my ultrasound...I'm really hoping it will be a girl (well honestly my whole family is) - as long as he/she is healthy I don't really care, but I may be a touch disappointed if it is a boy. We leave for our next WDW Vaca 2 days after the ultrasound and I would like to make a shirt that says something like, "Waiting for my Prince/Princess" depending on the sex of the baby. Does anyone have any ideas on how to make that look cute? I would also like to report that after 2 blood glucose tests, my blood sugar is great and after almost 5 months of pregnancy...my thyroid levels are almost normal!!:cool1: Any help would be greatly appreciated with the shirt idea.

Congrats disneylvr on the arrival of your little one!

How about one of these for a tshirt... I know I plan on using them!

Oh! And I totally forgot to post the picture of my adorable little blob ;)... This is from 12/23.

US7weeks12-23-09.jpg

jenandnelson-We called ours a blob for the longest time, and since we don't have a name, we call him Blobby! DH's mom gets upset with us for that, but I think it's a cute nickname for now!

EmALee - My whole family, except me, was hoping for a girl with my first. And she was a girl. And I admit I was pretty disappointed at first. I don't know why I cared so much as I wanted a girl ultimately anyway and knew I wanted more than 1 kid, but I really wanted the first to be a boy. In part, and it was a big part, cause my mom likes girls sooooooooo much better, and this was her first grandchild, so I figured if it were a boy she'd *have* to like him, but if she already had a granddaughter, then later on a grandson wouldn't have the same appeal. Essentially I was right as she definitely favors my daughter over my son now, but that probably would have happened anyway and certainly isn't something I can change.

But anyway, it took me awhile to get over the disappointment, and I still held out hope till she was actually born that maybe they were wrong with the ultrasound. Now, of course, I couldn't imagine things any other way. And with this baby we were all totally set on another girl and I know if it had been another boy there would have been a lot of disappointment, which is ridiculous as I love my son so much. But I think you just get an idea, a vision of your life with your baby, and anything other than that is initially disappointing but then you get over it and everything is fine and you would never change a thing.

Jenn - Those are adorable shirts! Adi from this thread made me a shirt for my daughter that says "Biggest Sister of All" and I made some for my kids that say "I'm going to be the Big Sister/Brother to a Little Sister" which, along with pink cupcakes, was how we announced that this baby is a girl, but nowhere near as cute as those ideas.

And I like your photo of your little 'blob' too! Those early photos are so neat!

Thank you for the shirt ideas! They are so cute!!

I guess the reason I want a girl so much is because I'll be raising him/her by myself. Think ahead about 11 years I would much rather have "the birds and the bees" discussion with a girl by myself rather than a boy. The good thing is, a good friend of mine just had a boy in August...so maybe when the time comes she'll be able to give me advice on that. Plus, you're right - when I envision my future it is with an adorable little girl. I'll get over it if its a boy...they are cute too.

Thanks for the help!

We're calling ours Dubs for now, short for WiggleWorm, since this one is a squirmer. I love the nickname Blobby though, lol.

justhat,

Can you make arrangements to go into the office without see the doctor to get it done? It's just a swab. Last time I had it done my midwife gave it to me and I did it myself in the bathroom. Just wondering if you could go in and do something like that so that you have your results in time for baby's birth.
