Moms to Be Part 3

I've been lurking as well, things have just been so busy!

I can totally relate to those of you that can't sleep. I keep getting shooting pain in my hips, I'm just not a side sleeper and I cannot get comfortable for more than an hour or so. Add that to my constant need to use the bathroom, and it is no fun at all! I go back to work for the school year next week and I am going to be one cranky teacher for the first 6 weeks or so until Connor arrives!

Has anyone had any problems finding shoes that fit? I have been wearing croc sandals all summer long but can't wear them at the school. Spent the weekend looking for some decent looking tennis shoes and have had NO luck! I dont' know what I am going to wear on my feet for the next 2 months. Plus, my crocs are stinky and I don't know how to clean them!

Have you tried putting a pillow between your knees when you sleep on your side? It was a life saver for me.

You can throw your crocs in the washing machine or just use any dish soap on them. It might strip the shiny finish off a bit, but they won't smell. Try googling cleaning crocs for more ideas.

I wrote up my birth story on my blog and because DH is now back at work and I'm finishing up summer break with all 5 kids at home (and not sleeping much yet thanks to Miss Alexis' constant need to nurse), I'm just going to cut and paste it here too. (I'll probably edit for length before I post it.)

As most of you know, none of my labors have been spontaneous. Some people have abs or buns of steel. Apparently, only my reproductive organs are made of such strong stuff-because my rear and my tummy could use a lot of work. (Especially now!) I went several days past my due date with my two oldest children before giving in and getting induced and for the third and fourth I just accepted whatever induction date I was given. Why I was hoping things would be different this time, I don't know...but I was. Instead, not only did I not go into labor this time, I wasn't even dilating which meant I couldn't be induced either. Frankly, I wasn't in that much of a hurry because I already have four kids and a crazy life and I knew all too well what adding a newborn to the mix would do to that. Dr P., on the other hand, really doesn't like his patients to go much past 40 weeks and he was getting antsy. Ultimately, he decided that he was going to try an induction the week past my due date whether I had dilated or not. I wasn't thrilled with this, because once you start an induction with Dr. P, you don't leave the hospital without delivering. And if your body doesn't respond to the pitocin, you usually end up with a c-section. And since I had avoided one with all the other kids, I didn't like the idea of having one this time. But. at the end of the day I do trust Dr. P and I was also pretty tired of being pregnant. So I knew I would go along with whatever he scheduled and hope for the best outcome.

My due date came and went the following Friday. Saturday and Sunday saw several contractions, but nothing that indicated my body was serious about going into labor. Monday morning, the hospital called to confirm my Midnight induction. It's a good thing that they called, because I had no idea anything had been officially scheduled yet. But hey, at least I got my "surprise" labor wish that way. I still had a 4 p.m. appointment with Dr. P at which he declared me to be 1-2 cm. dilated. I knew that was enough for a scheduled induction to be successful and I felt much better about all the plans. My parents came over to stay with the kids and we left for the hospital at about 11: 45 since insurance didn't want us officially admitted until after Midnight. Once we got there, they explained that the pitocin wouldn't start until the morning and that they would only be using cytotec capsules overnight to better prep my body for induction. Both of my sisters have been induced using cytotec alone, so I knew it was milder than a pit drip AND that it would likely be effective. I was pleasantly surprised that Dr. P is using cytotec as it isn't technically FDA approved for labor yet. (My sisters' Dr. has no problem using it, but Dr. P is a bit more 'by the book' than he is.)

I really liked my nurse and thought she was great. The only problem I had that first night was that I was apparently a little bit dehydrated and blew three veins before they managed to get an IV in the only spot that it would work which was (sadly) the back of my right hand. They didn't want to put one there, I didn't want one there; but it was the only place where it worked-unfortunately. Not only did that leave me with an IV in the back of my writing hand, but one of the blown veins was just below where the blood pressure cuff was placed and it throbbed every time my blood pressure was taken (which was automatic throughout the night and early morning). I still have quite the bruise left from it. Once the IV was finally in place, the cytotec capsule was inserted and I immediately began having regular contractions. They weren't unbearable, but I couldn't really sleep through them either. My youngest sister joined us at the hospital that night, and I was VERY grateful because Dave was asleep within minutes after laying down and I'm glad I had someone to talk to in between contractions. This went on from about 1 a.m. until 4 a.m. when I was given a second capsule. At that point, my contractions stayed mild enough that I was able to sleep for a couple of hours. When I woke up at 6:15, things got interesting...

First, my nurse went ahead and added the pitocin to my IV. By far, this is my least favorite thing about an induction; but the contractions were initially mild. At 6:30, I got up to use the bathroom and brush my teeth. (I had been asleep just long enough to get a nasty taste in my mouth, but not to feel rested.) While I was brushing my teeth, I felt something weird. Was that what it felt like to have your water break? I called out from the bathroom that I thought that it had. Dave, of course, slept right through that (which he is sorry about, since that is the closest to spontaneous labor that I will ever get) so my sister went to find my nurse. She checked me, and sure enough, I had! This was very exciting to me, because Dr. P has broken it for me every other time. That excitement was short-lived in the light of how quickly my contractions went from uncomfortable to downright painful after that had happened. To make matters worse, they kept turning up the pit drip. (Dr. P was at the hospital at that point doing a c-section and I think he wanted to make sure that I delivered before he had to leave and go over to his office.) Over the course of the night, I had dilated with the cytotec from 2 cm. to 4 cm. and I knew once the pitocin really kicked in that things would go quickly. I began asking for an epidural to make sure I didn't miss out on one. I also wish we could have just continued the labor with cytotec, even though it would have gone a little bit slower, because it was working and was far less intense than the usual induction contractions.

Unfortunately, everything began to get really painful for me just at the 7 a.m. shift-change. They couldn't even page the anesthesiologist until 7:30. By then, I was definitely miserable. In addition to hard contractions, little Alexis had somehow managed to stick a foot back up in my rib cage. Each contractions seemed to wedge it in there even more tightly. It hurt as much as the contractions themselves. I thought I was going to cry. By the time the anesthesiologist arrived, I wasn't sure I could sit at the edge of the bed and hold still, but I didn't think I could stand enduring the rest of my labor without the epidural either; so I was determined to stick it out. Our anesthesiologist had the personality of Mr. Rogers and/or Ned Flanders depending on which generation you come from. I thought I might kill him. Dave thought I might too. He had a little rhyme for every step of the procedure. Anyway, he was far too cheery and goofy for someone in transitional labor (Yes, I was in transition-we didn't find that out until after the fact). On the good side, he would later come to visit me and the baby which was very, very nice of him. After he was finished, they had me lay flat for half an hour which is standard. What usually happens is that over the course of that 30 minutes is that the pain is completely gone when the time is up. This time...not so much. I was a little numb in the legs and feet, but the contractions were still nauseatingly painful. I pride myself on not whining to nurses, but this time I couldn't help it. After the half-hour was up, I was in just as much pain as before and I told her so. She checked me and said it was because I was completely dilated and ready to start pushing. I was shocked.

The epidural must have been working in part because I had no urge to push whatsoever. That was good because Dr. P was still finishing up the c-section and wouldn't be available for at least another 10 minutes. In the meantime, I watched things getting prepped very quickly all around me. I still felt awful, and I was glad no one (meaning my mom, oldest daughter, or my grandparents) had had a chance to get to the waiting room yet even though that is their favorite place to be. The only people I wanted anywhere near me (Dave and my sisters) were already there. Dave did call everyone to let them know it would be soon, but I knew no one would be allowed into the room at this point and I was relieved. I don't remember much else about those last 15 minutes spent waiting on Dr. P except that I wanted to curl into a ball and scream, but I didn't because I knew it would be useless. I also remember swearing during the contractions and apologizing for it between them, but Dave doesn't remember that. (Maybe he and I have different ideas of what bad words are.) At one point the nurse offered to get me some Stadol or Demerol or did I just want to wait on Dr. P and "get this over with." I just wanted it over with and I'm not a fan of either of those drugs, so I waited on him instead.

Soon enough, Dr. P was there. I was still in pain, but at this point I was too numb to get my own legs into the stirrups nor could I tell when contractions were starting-only when they were at their worst. Fortunately, Dr. P and the nurse could tell and in about a push and a half, Miss Alexis was here! She was quiet at first, but got good and loud while they were cleaning her up. They gave her to me briefly and I ascertained that she was beautiful AND that she was really a "she." At 7 lbs., she is my smallest baby and once I removed her little hat, I saw that she had the most hair of any of my kids. After the initial screaming, she calmed down pretty quickly. Almost one week later, she still seems happiest just hanging out in mom's arms and taking in the world with her big eyes that I think may eventually turn brown like her Dad's. So far, we are enjoying her in one big sleep-deprived blur, but I definitely wanted to get the story of how she got here written and posted before I forgot the finer details. So here it is, thanks for reading.

So I just got a call from my doctor's office and they said that my preliminary blood work came back and that my platelet count was low. They said normally it is between 150 and 400 but that I was at 141. They want me to come back in and test again to make sure it is not a lab error.

Did anyone else experience this? And if so, is it bad?

Hey everyone,hope you are all doing well.I was wondering if anyone has had problems with recurring uninary tract infections? I had on 2 weeks ago-took meds for 10 days and felt good after 3 days on them.I ended on Thurs and by Sunday the pain started coming back.I had my high risk appointment on Monday and there was white cells in my urine and I told them what was going on but I had an appointment at my regular ob today so they said to tell him.I went today and they did another culture but he didn't want to give me more antibiotics till the results came back because I have been on them for weeks due to walking pnumonia and then the bladder infection.I am getting more back pain as the day goes on though.I have been drinking alot to hopefully help flush it.Did anyone get them alot or not get rid of one?I think my body has been really run down from being sick for a month with this cough that it is not fighting things off good.

Melessa - Thanks for sharing - glad you got some surprises - the midnight induction call, your water breaking. Glad to hear that things went well and that Alexis is well too. CONGRATS!

I'm sorry I can't help much, except with a hug :hug: KNOCK ON WOOD - I've never had a UTI. I think part of your problem is the run down immune system from everything else, plus all the antibiotics. Hopefully they find something that can help soon!! Take care!

Congrats to all the recent new moms, so glad your bundles of joy have arrived. I was just lurking to see who is on the top of the list now.
Melissa I can't believe you are almost on the top of the list. It seems like yesterday I was lurking on the wedding thread and mentioned you to join us over here :lmao:...now I am looking at my one month old princess in her swing and you are soon going to be a Mom.

So exciting!!!!

I know, I can't believe that he will be here so soon! It seems like yesterday that it was Christmas morning and I was jumping up and down in the bed telling Robert I was pregnant :lovestruc

~~~~~~~~~~~~
Just had my first internal and I am 1 centimeter and completely effaced!!!!!!!:yay: He said baby would probably be about 2 weeks early!!:banana:
Has anyone had any spotting after an internal? I read it was normal but my doctor didn't warn me about it and I am a little bit.
Yes, it's normal. As long as it stays "a little bit."
I found out we were expecting Alexis on Thanksgiving. How exciting that all our little holiday babies are here or coming soon!
Morning everyone!
Had my 35 week check up yesterday and everything still looks good (except for me still gaining weight and it's really frustrating because I'm not eating any different but I'll quit complaining now). I had the Strep test and the heartbeat is around 145; my movement seems to be a little bit less than I've had in the past few weeks but I can still count the 10 in an hour test so I guess someone is just getting less room to play around in.
I now go every week which just seems insane, and internals don't start until 38 weeks for me.
Anyone have any tricks on sleeping these last few weeks?? I swear I'm getting up at least 4 times a night (NOT to pee, I just wake up) and it's really messing with my REM. Everyone is saying it's getting you ready for the baby - but I'm not napping durning the day yet! :rotfl:
Melissa, completely normal to have some small spotting. I had it after my internals, just keep an eye if you think it is to much call Dr. Do not put yourself under any unnessary stress. He is almost here.
That is so awesome! I bet that takes off some of the stress about the cruise, right?
But how crazy are you going now, trying to get prepared?? :goodvibes:goodvibes
I have two question for everyone... Does anyone know what the "normal" or "average" weight of a 26 week baby is? I'm getting different weights from different websites and I'm not sure. I had another ultrasound on tuesday (that makes 4 since we found out) and they said he's measuring at 2lbs 3 oz. She said it was normal, but to me I don't know he seems to be a little big already haha.
Also next week is my gestational diabetes test. Just how bad is that drink? I already know going into it that I'm going to have the orange flavor as it's the only flavor the hospital carries...(I hate orange drinks to begin with). Is it really that nasty? Any tips?
Thanks in advance!
Kristen, do you remember the Orange Drink that McDonald's used to have? It tastes exactly like that, really sweet and really orangey. Its a little thick too, I wish you could pour it over ice! I hate orange too, but I had psyced myself up for it to be so awful that it turned out just to be sort of unpleasant.
I had my 32 week check-up this morning, and everything looks good. I didn't gain anything this week, but I didn't lose anything either. I get a little lecture on my last visit for gaining 5 pounds in the two weeks...because I ate a Mushroom Swiss burger everyday that week! I promised to lay off the burgers and it did help prevent more gain. I can't believe some of us are so close!
My baby was 1 lb 4oz at 24 weeks, sorry that it doesn't help. . . I would guess yur baby is on the big average side. My brother was HUGE - born at 26 weeks gestation and 2bs 14oz, 16 inches (though his weight dropped the next day to 2lbs 7oz)! Dr. says he would have been a 10-12 lb baby. If the tech said it is normal, than the baby is within a normal range. :goodvibes
AND the orange drink, can't help with that either. Where I go they do something different - they let you chose and one of the options is three McDonald's hotcakes, 1 thing of syrup, and 8 oz of 100% fruit juice, and then get pricked two hours later. If you fail that then you do the three hour test - I passed, thankfully! But that sugar rush of all those pancakes and syrup after fasting still made me feel queasy! I bet that isthe biggest issue with the drink. I've heard it tastes like flat soda. I heard the colder it is the easier it is to drink. Hopefully it isn't too bad for you!
Oh, I forgot, we had our 3D ultrasound and I wanted to share some pics with you guys!
I had an ultrasound done with Lucas at 26wks.
I had to go dig up my old post on the old thread, but he was 2lbs 10oz.
He was 9lbs 5oz at birth (39 wks) so sounds like it is a bit on the big side... but they didn't get too concerned. I think they told me it was 90th percentile.
Hi everyone, can I join in?
Tomoroow we will be at six weeks. We just had our first ultrasound yesterday and it was so exciting. The Dr did say that the heartrate was a little low though (97 BPM at 5 wks 5 days) so I have been worried ever since. I have to go back two weeks from yesterday to have another ultrasound done.
I am feeling optomistic, but I am still nervous. I have found on the internet that 97 BPM isn't that low at that stage, but the nurse asked if we were coming back in four weeks, so I am worried to have to come back in two that something isn't right.
Anyone have this experience and have everything be ok?
Our due date is April 9, 2010! We are telling my parents tomorrow night and I am nervous about that too. My mom can be strange and I am not sure how she will feel about it.
Anyway, that was a long rambling first post. I am excited to be here and hope to get to know all of you better as the months go by!
Amy
I had no problem with the orange drink. The nurse took it out of a fridge, poured it into a cup and mentioned that it's easier to just chug it. It tastes just like flat orange soda. Don't worry too much about it.
Welcome Iris! :wave2:
I went to fill a perscription at the drug store today. Copay is $10; when I get to the counter it's $122. Apparently we have NO INSURANCE since it was cancelled on 7/1. UMMMM....it'd be nice if someone would have told us! :headache: Apparently his work just found out "recently" via a letter from the health care company that it was cancelled 7/1 and they are in the "process of getting it reinstated". What's gonna happen if I deliver before it get's reinstated? What about the 7 paychecks he's been paying our deductable from? :headache:
