"Mom, Dad, 3 Kids & a Gingerbread Boy" Matty's Wish Trip December 10-18, 2009

I love that the kids just got to hang out and do what they wanted! Makes fun for all (okay, you might have been having alot running through your head at that time).

Can't wait to see what you did next.

Fun morning, and you haven't even gone anywhere! Hmmmm, I vote for SW, selfishly because I want to read you version of it. :lmao: Whatever you did, I'm sure they had fun.

Awwww...what a great morning!!! I even have a tear in my eye...:sad1:

I can't even begin to imagine just how emotional all of those stars are. Ok, oK, I have to stop!!!!

Can't wait to hear about the rest of your day!! I hate these cliff-hangers!!!!

popcorn:: On with the show!!!!

Hi,
I was partically moved by your post today as we are a family that returned to hunt down our star and I can tell you it was more emotional than the day we put it up there !!!
returning to gktw still with our ds was like a wish come true - the volunteers made it so special and we really enjoyed our day.
On the last day of our holiday we asked the kids what they wanted to redo and the answer from all 4 of them was return to GKTW for a 2nd day and once again they had a blast.
I am really looking forward to visting GKTW again in November and we will once again look for his star its a constant reminder that there is hope and a symbol of a miracle in castle of miracles x x x

( if you want to read about our day at give kids in March see day 9 of my trip report in my signature !!)

"????????????? and Sesame Place?....................I thought we were in Florida!"

So what exactly DID we do????????

Well, we went to Walmart of course LOL.

And THEN we went to SeaWorld!!!!!!!!!!

First stop: Dolphin Cove. Purpose: to check the time of the next dolphin feeding. On the way to the Cove we spot this little guy amidst some of his friends:

100_2535.jpg

Beautiful isn't he????

and then pass the Stingray Lagoon. Now the lagoon is swarming with dozens of these slimy creatures (ewwwwwwwwwwww) and the kids are stoked and begging to stay for awhile. Sounds good to me..........................I make my way up to the window to purchase some shrimp. Once there the women behind the counter informs me that we are entitled to a free tray of food for each member of our MAW party :yay: Now that's quite a perk given that there are six of us wouldn't you say??? We all end up having a really good time trying to feed these guys (not as easy as it might appear) and end up spending quite awhile at this exhibit:

100_2537.jpg

100_2541.jpg

it may be difficult to tell but there were at least a dozen stingrays going crazy here trying to get the food LOL

Eventually all of our shrimp has been devoured and we decide it's time to return to our quest for the dolphins. When we make it to Dolphin Cove we find that the next feeding is not until 1:45. Hmmmmmmm. It's 1:00 now. As we are standing around deciding what to do a gentleman who works at SeaWorld approaches us and asks if we would like to take part in a 'close-up encounter' with the dolphins. Say what????????? Apparently they have a 'behind the scenes' tour, one segment of which takes place here with the dolphins. According to the gentleman a large group of people had made reservations for today but had not shown up leaving only a few people participating. In situations such as this, he goes on to say, they like to open up the opportunity to Wish families. So, would we like to participate?????? Gee, don't have to ask us twice! LOL

The 20+ minute session has us participating in a fun-filled training session with the dolphins. The trainer first does a short demonstration and then teaches the children a variety of hand signals which they then perform themselves. The dolphins prove to be quite talented as they flap their fins, shake their tails, turn in circles, give hugs etc. The kids are having a ball. Dh and I had had the opportunity to swim with dolphins in Hawaii on our honeymoon but honestly, watching the kids giddy with enthusiasm and awe made for an experience that was even more memorable:

100_2550.jpg

100_2551.jpg

100_2552.jpg

100_2553.jpg

Our session over we find that there is still another 15 minutes until actual feeding time. Although everyone really wants to feed the dolphins we wonder if it really makes sense to sit around and wait? We ask an employee how long the feeding sessions generally last and get a very noncommittal "until the food runs out". Ok....so that didn't help LOL It just doesn't seem wise to just sit around given the limited time we have to enjoy the park today. So what to do??? A check of the Guide reveals that there is a show starting in 15 minutes and it looks like a really good one. Not wanting to miss it we finally make the decision to just go and hope that perhaps the feeding will still be going on when the show is over. On the way to the show we stop by to see the manatees:

100_2555.jpg

and then cross to the amphitheater to find our seats for the Blue Horizons Dolphin Show. With talented acrobats outfitted in incredible costumes and amazing choreography I'd give this show a 10!!!!!!!

100_2565.jpg

When the show lets out there is a huge line of folks waiting to have their photos taken with the cast. Although tempting (the costumes were so beautiful; so colorful) we really are hoping to still be able to feed the dolphins and fear the wait in line will nix that opportunity. Dolphin Cove is just around the corner so we run. Do we make it there in time?

We do. YAY!! The kids are thrilled!!!!

100_2571.jpg

100_2573.jpg

100_2572.jpg

Feeding time done we again check our Guide and after some discussion decide to head on over to the other side of the park for a few rides. Now while SeaWorld may be more known for it's sea life and a couple of mega coasters, it does also have a little area known as Happy Harbor where rides and attractions for the younger set abound. On the way I make a little friend:

100_2574.jpg

and then find yet another reason to make a detour:

100_2579.jpg

100_2578.jpg

100_2577.jpg

Ahhhhhh a bakery!!! We certainly can't pass a bakery now can we? An order of strawberries with chocolate, a cherry danish, an apple danish, a warm cinnamon roll, a bag of cheetos and chocolate chip cookie.............................now that's my idea of lunch!

On the way to Happy Harbor we pass a caricature artist and get a bright idea  What if he could draw a caricature of Matty.................Matty's head on a gingerbread man's body!!!!! What a great memory for a scrapbook! Dh and I are giddy at the thought. We discuss the idea with the artist who is 100% on board and gives us a reasonable price. After some discussion we tell him we'll be back later (we're concerned about it getting ruined if we have to carry it around the park with us for the rest of the day). The artist tries to convince us otherwise but to no avail. We promise him, and ourselves, that we WILL be back - he can count on us. He shakes his head (apparently he's heard such promises before). We continue on our way.

Happy Harbor here we come...........................

But wait! Up ahead we spot the Polar Express and know that we can't miss that! Now we have seen a version of this attraction at a furniture store at home (yes, you read that right :rotfl: we have a very large furniture store in MA that has a fabulous motion simulator attraction in one of it's stores and the Polar Express runs at the holidays...........................................and if you think that's funny you should see one of their other locations where they have a full-sized trapeze where people can 'fly' for 10 minutes, take 2 hour classes, have birthday parties etc.). The wait is short and soon we are winding through the turnstiles and 'boarding' our train..................

100_2580.jpg

Although fun it proves to be much shorter than the one we are used to at home and, to make matters worse, it doesn't include the 3D glasses . That proves to be the biggest disappointment. Wasn't that movie MADE to be in 3D???? Anyway, if we hadn't seen the version at home we probably would've enjoyed it more but, since we had, we leave this attraction with a sense of "is that it?????"

Ok......................so are we ever going to get to this Happy Harbor place you wonder?????? Yup. We do. Finally..................we arrive. But wait.........................................this place looks awfully familiar to us. The rides, the climbing nets. I feel like I've been here before. This place looks very much like...................................... it's SESAME PLACE!!!!! Sesame Place? In Florida? Now for anyone who doesn't know, Sesame Place is a wonderful little park in Pennsylvania; a park we have been enjoying for the last 7 years. Although primarily a water park it does have a section of the park with dry rides and attractions; dry rides and attractions that look very much like this Happy Harbor................................well except that instead of rides plastered with the likes of Elmo, Grover and Cookie Monster we're seeing Shamu and Dolphins and Octopi!!!!!!!! After further discussion we realize that both are Anheuseur Busch parks. Ahhhhhh that explains it. Too funny!!!!!!

It's pretty dead in this area of the park today. Strange. It's a beautiful day. Alot of attractions are simply corded off. The kids are particularly disappointed that the nets and climbs are off limits today.................an attraction they typically spend alot of time on at Sesame Place. After riding a few rides we are drawn to a performance nearby. A group of musicians and acrobats on stilts (one of the acrobats confesses to be from Boston!!!):

100_2585.jpg

and before long the kids are invited to play along:

100_2581.jpg

100_2584.jpg

In the end Happy Harbor really proves to be much too quiet for our tastes so we don't stay all that long. On the way out we spot what appears to be a fun little attraction..............remote control monster trucks in a pit along with some remote control boats in the cutest of little lagoons:

100_2587.jpg

100_2586.jpg

The kids, of course, begin to excitedly beg for coins but soon find out that......................................this attraction doesn't seem to be working today either :confused3. Oh well..........................we didn't really come to SeaWorld for the rides anyway, did we? What we really need are some good shows! A quick check of the Guide.....................and we find just the ones!! :yay:

Up next: Seamore and Shamu

I just LOVE Mickey's outfit:lovestruc. The kids sure looked like they were having a great time at GKTW!. Im so glad you found Matty's autograph book. I still need to get some of those;) Can't wait to read what's next!!

that was one serious moment of panic when his book wasn't in the bag with the others LOL I had actually never given much thought to an autograph book before coming on here...................just another great thing I can credit this forum for. The kids had sooo much fun collecting them all:)

Don't give me too much credit! I was two days behind on my threads and happened to click on yours right after you updated.

Count me in on the control freak thing too! I think a lot of us DISers are - who else plans their trips in such details months in advance and counts down until they can make ADR's?

actually compared to some people on the DIS I'm probably pretty tame. Some of these folks are downright crazy obsessive (well, that's what I tell my dh when he says 'you still on there?' LOL)

I love that the kids just got to hang out and do what they wanted! Makes fun for all (okay, you might have been having alot running through your head at that time).

Can't wait to see what you did next.

The kids really enjoyed just playing quietly.................they really are pretty easy to please. As I've said the gogogogogogogo is dh and my way and the chickens just get dragged along for the ride. Although they never complain and seem to always be having fun, it's times like this when I see them 'choosing' relaxed play over gogogo that I realize they don't crave the constant activity like we do

Fun morning, and you haven't even gone anywhere! Hmmmm, I vote for SW, selfishly because I want to read you version of it. :lmao: Whatever you did, I'm sure they had fun.

well, by now you know. Barely scratched the surface though. I don't know how people can say you only need a half day for these parks..................there is soooooo much to see and so many great shows to watch. We easily could've been there from opening to close.

I will definately have to read your TR. We are planning a return trip this December......................like an anniversary trip. We would actually like to make it an annual event barring unforseen circumstances. Did you guys volunteer at GKTW during your return trip? That is something I'd like to do, hopefully as a family (although I don't know how that would work with 4 kids LOL) Magical memories for sure:)

Sorry I've been so slow lately in my updating. I'm really finding it hard to get going again once I get away from it for a day or two. But I'm determined to finish this.........................hopefully sooner than later:)

I love your new updates! I am glad you found Matty's autograph book. The time at Sea World looks like it was worth it! A behind the scenes dolphin tour sounds like a special tour. I am glad they were able to feed the rays and the dolphins. I also love the idea of Matty as a gingerbread man in the drawing! It sounds as if the stop at the Castle of Miracles did not delay your fun day at Sea World at all!:banana::banana:

You have just made me that more excited to go to Sea World:rotfl2: I love those dolphin pictures. The show with all the blue that really looks neat. Love this update!

We didnt volunteer as like you we have 4 kids but when all the kids are grown up we are planninga trip to florida for a few months so we can give back to GKTW and I cant wait for that day!!! As dd is only 3 though it may be a while. I have just purchased a stone for the pavemenet on arcade of angels and cant wait to see it when we return

Darn you, Pamela! I have been so okay with my whatever attitude towards both Universal AND Sea World, but seeing your wonderful pictures and reading your TR is making me reconsider to the point of going back to the drawing board!:rotfl2:

Seriously, though, great pictures and great reporting!

I love the pics of seaworld!! We were thinking of doing that for only a few hours, but maybe I should reconsider!!!

BTW, was in the library the other day and the librarian had "The Gingerbread Boy" out to read to the preschoolers. Got a kick out of thinking about Matty and Murphy!! :rotfl2:

Best to you all,

Hey girl I just popped in to try and catch up on your tr so that I can feel even more slack lol! I have about 70% complete in a word doc so maybe tonight Ill get something going here. Great pics! Hope you guys are well! Talk to ya soon!!

Part III: "Seamore and Shamu"

First on the schedule? Clyde and Seamore Take Pirate Island - a silly show featuring sea lions, otters and a walrus with crazy pirates and a really wonderful and creative set (sorry, I can't help it I'm just really into costuming, props and sets LOL). Be forewarned however.......................the front row is NOT the place to sit ;)

Now that's what I call one BIG fishy!!!!!!

Leaving the Shamu amphiteater is like herding cows. Whoa  But we manage to survive the crowd and make our way towards the park exit. It's dark now. The attractions are closed. The kiosks have drawn their curtains. We suddenly realize................................we have broken our promise........................there will be no gingerbread man caricature gracing Matty's scrapbook afterall :sad1:

The walk to the front of the park is quite the long one but eventually we do get there. And on the way out we decide to snap a picture of the SeaWorld Xmas tree (the WHOLE tree!)

100_2593.jpg

and then the lighthouse (a WHOLE lighthouse!!). Reminds us of home:)

100_2596.jpg

It's been a short day at SeaWorld but a fun one. We barely got a chance to scratch the surface. So many exhibits; so many shows that we never even got a peek at. There is simply no way that park can be done justice in less than a day.................possible not even a whole day. We chalk it up as yet another place to put on our list for a future trip.

Time check: 6:45. Oops..............better hurry. Did you think the fun was over??????????????????????? Oh no. We've got us some plans for the evening..................................................;)

Next up: "Baby it's cold............................inside?"

Lovin your updates! What did you think of the Clyde and Seymore show? I've heard it's really fun and not to be missed but Im still debating.

I'm finally getting caught up on all the TRs and PTRs I'm subscribed to. You have made so many updates!!!! Love all of the photos and the detailed reports!

Looks like the kids had a blast at Sea World. We loved the shows as well.

Too funny that Sesame Place and Sea World are so similar. We have been to, and loved, Sesame Place a handful of times so I'm not as disappointed that we skipped the Happy Harbor. Bella was too short for most of the rides anyway.

You got some great pictures of feeding the dolphins. Did you have to pay for the other kids? DGMa had to pay for AJ and Kennedy but then they gave DH, DGMa, and myself a free tray of fish for them. :confused3

We really liked Clyde and Seamore, it was silly but fun. I don't know that I'd make it a top priority but if you have the time I'd say definately go. It'd tie in with all your other pirate stuff:laughing:

arg a cliffhanger!! I loved Seaworld!!! I should have made that our first day lol!!

Can't wait for the next update!

I take it you've been then? I think I was there back in the early 90's when I lived in Florida for a couple of years. I wish we had gotten there when the park opened...............I love animals. Of course if we had gotten there earlier we would've missed all that fun in the Castle of Miracles. Ahhhhh...too much to do, too little time:confused3

I really did do a double take when we first went in to Happy Harbor. If you've been to SP you didn't miss anything. And to be honest, the Shamu rollercoaster paled in comparison to the Super Grover one :lmao: (dh and all my kids agreed!!!)

Most of those px were actally from the session we did with the trainer. I was pleased that we got so many good ones. And no we didn't pay for any of the food..............we got one free tray for each one of us at both the stingray and dolphin exhibit (that was a lot of food). I didn't ask for them though, we just always wore our buttons (all six of us) so it was always clear that we were a Wish family.

Part III: "Baby It's Cold.....................Inside???????"

Ok....so where were we??? Oh yes, the parking lot at SeaWorld. It's 6:45. And we've got places to go :woohoo:

And we're off :drive:

Of course we have no idea how to get where we are going but dh and I make a good team. He's the pilot, I'm the co-pilot. The kids? Well I guess they qualify as the unruly passengers LOL. We make our way through Orlando, back-tracking once or twice, until we finally arrive at our destination. The Gaylord Palms Hotel. Wow. Beautiful. Wish I had taken a picture but I didn't so you'll have to trust me on this one. Beautiful.

"What are we doing here?" the kids ask (see, don't feel badly, they don't know where we are going either)

We park the van and pile out. It's still fairly warm and we are all wearing shorts and t-shirts. We each don additional upper layers in preparation. On our feet................a combination of sneakers and flip flops. As we make our way into the hotel a young woman looks down at my feet, in flip flops, and smiles - "you're going to freeze!!!!" she giggles. "Naaaah" I tell her, "I'm a hardy New Englander".

Once inside the hotel (did I say it was beautiful? it was beautiful) we follow the signs to the ticket counter and enter the line. The kids can't stop with the "what are we doing here,"where are we going?" but we continue to keep the secret. We show the woman at the counter our voucher from GKTW and she promptly runs off to find someone who can help us. In short order a very nice woman comes out of the back, welcomes us, and then proceeds to hand us an envelope with 6 tickets, a voucher for a free picture, a voucher for free parking, and coupons for free hot chocolate for 'later'. "You'll be needing those" she smiles ;)

At this hour there is no waiting but by the looks of the corral it apparently can get QUITE busy. We are feeling fortunate that we've chosen a good time to come. Before we enter the maze we take a picture of the children who, despite the sign, remain quite confused.

mawtripvideopicturesdisc1062.jpg

Now at this point some of you know exactly what we are in for (you do, don't you?) But since some of my loyal following may still be in the dark...................let's just keep the suspense going alittle while longer, shall we?

Through the maze and into 'the back'. Oooooh it is kinda cold in here. Up ahead we see table after table after table piled high with...................down parkas. Blue down parkas. Beautiful blue down parkas (ok, so maybe not so beautiful but I'm trying to be positive). Everyone gets one. And do we look silly. At this point they take a picture of our group in our beautiful blue down parkas. It's one of those pictures that they take in front of a green screen. You know. And then, when you actually see the photo, you notice how you've suddenly, somehow, been magically transported to someplace else  And I do so wish I could find that photo because..............

we.................

look..................

hilarious!

But alas, at present, it appears to be among the missing :sad2:.

Ok.....the kids are starting to lose their patience (I suppose you all might be too huh????). We lumber around the corner feeling like the Michelin Men and quickly come upon a sign which seems to explain the seriousness of the situation which lies ahead:

mawtripvideopicturesdisc1063.jpg

Yup, you read that right...................9 degrees  My toesies are indeed gonna be alittle chilly 'cuz we are about to enter the Arctic Zone!!!

But first.......a couple of silly photo ops!

icepx0005.jpg

icepx0004.jpg

icepx0002.jpg

Yup, that's me on the left:rotfl:

and then we are there: "ICE"

ICE is a yearly holiday exhibit at Gaylord Palms. Two million pounds of ice. Two million pounds!!! The ice is sculpted into amazing displays. Room after room, all in a different theme. The arctic forest, the North Pole (complete with eskimos!), a life-sized nativity scene, a carnival with a carousel (you can sit on!), larger than life christmas ornaments, a gargantuan Santa Claus, and a giant ice SLIDE!!!!!! The kids' eyes were wide. Heck, mine were too. I can't imagine the work that went into these sculptures. To call their creators talented would be an understatement.

Sadly our pictures are few and far between and those that we do have are of very poor quality :sad2:. They caution you not to use a 'good' camera because of the temperature and so we choose a single use cheapie instead. Poor choice. We use almost all of the pictures in the camera but less than half come out! UGH And what do.........................well, here's what we have (of course, the thumb doesn't help either :rotfl:):

icepx0010.jpg

icepx0011.jpg

icepx0014.jpg

icepx0013.jpg

icepx0006.jpg

Definately does not do it justice. Trust me, it really is beautiful. And the slide??? Well Nick and Liv actually climb up and slid down once or twice!!!!! Talk about some chilly little butts!

While it would be fun to linger it really is quite chilly. Beyond chilly. Even in our beautiful blue parkas. And, if you just happen to run into that woman who laughed at me earlier please don't tell her but.........................MY FEET WERE FREEZING!!!!!!!!

Once beyond the frozen tundra we toss our beautiful blue parkas in their appropriate receptacles, pick up our photo, and browse the gift shop (stopping only to pick up a cute little stuffed gingerbread man for our growing collection) on our way to find the hot chocolate.

Although what I really need is a hot TUB, if the hot chocolate is all I can get, I'll take it.

We make our way up to the lobby. Did I mention that this hotel is beautiful??????? Holy cow! And the atrium! Beyond beautiful. You look up and you realize that hotel rooms have balconies that look out over this incredible space. If we didn't always have 4 kids in tow I'll tell you where we'd be making a reservation for a little hootchie-kootchie getaway;) ;) :rotfl::lmao::rotfl2:

This being the holiday season the hotel showcases a variety of special entertainment in addition to ICE. This night they are featuring a rather obscure, yet interesting and talented, rock and roll band. Their schtick? Belting out their version of popular Christmas carols at ear-piercing decibels. With outlandish costuming, twirling aerielists and special effects lighting it proves to be quite the show. We grab our hot chocolate, pick up a few bags of cheetos from the adjacent gift shop, and take a spot on the stairs. The show lasts about 20 minutes. Perfect. Just enough time to thawout.

Everyone is looking pretty tired at this point.

Time to head home.

We arrive back at GKTW at 9:30 and grab some grub at Katie's Kitchen. Lights are out by 10:00. We are hoping for an early wake-up tomorrow as the Nickelodeon characters will be on hand at the Village and then there's Hollywood Studios!!!!!! Will we make it? Will we finally make it to a park at opening????? Stay tuned:)

Next up: "Hangin' in Hollywood"

Darn you, Pamela! I have been so okay with my whatever attitude towards both Universal AND Sea World, but seeing your wonderful pictures and reading your TR is making me reconsider to the point of going back to the drawing board!:rotfl2:

Seriously, though, great pictures and great reporting!

Sorry Kelly: Well, not really. I've never met an amusement/water park I didn't like. I like to spread the joy :rotfl:

I love the pics of seaworld!! We were thinking of doing that for only a few hours, but maybe I should reconsider!!!

BTW, was in the library the other day and the librarian had "The Gingerbread Boy" out to read to the preschoolers. Got a kick out of thinking about Matty and Murphy!! :rotfl2:

Best to you all,

Hey, I just read that to Matty a couple of days ago. Too funny!! We were getting the biggest kick out of the illustrations:laughing:

Hey girl I just popped in to try and catch up on your tr so that I can feel even more slack lol! I have about 70% complete in a word doc so maybe tonight Ill get something going here. Great pics! Hope you guys are well! Talk to ya soon!!

Hey you!!

Ok....so where is it (your TR)????? I've been waiting:rolleyes1

Did you get my email from a week or so ago? Not pm. Email. I sent our address for Alyssa as well as a hotmail address I set up for Liv. Let me know.

So you've been lurking all along and haven't said hello ??????? Shame on you!

Hi to everyone for us:)
