Mockingjay (now with spoilers. Jump in when you can)

My son and I are definitely excited about this book. He had to read Hunger Games for English and we both got hooked.

For the record, I am Team Peeta. Gale is nice and I hope he finds a nice girl, but I want Katniss to end up with Peeta

Can I ask what grade your son had to read it for? I'm just wondering what age it would be appropriate for.

My daughter is 12 and she read Hunger Games when she was 10. There is violence but not overly so. The main characters are usually working from a self defense angle.

My best friends 10 and 12 year old brothers read the series and they love it.

I'm 19 and I was worried about the violence level before i read the book (I don't like overly bloodly battle scene type books) but this book is great the main characters are focusing more on survival and using their strengths as a defense in staying alive.

I hope that they don't leave loose ends but wrap it up as a trilogy. I see Katniss with Peeta. Maybe Gale can have Madge the mayor's daughter or something...:confused3. I also like Finnick. I would enjoy seeing more of him.

I see Katniss and Peeta ending up together as well. But i do have a weird feeling the either Gale or Haymitch will die in the last book. I don't know why i feel this way but i do and my boyfriend who also reads the series thinks this as well, we both think a major character will die in the last book.

My Hunger-Games obsessed daughter just turned 13. I think she's "prime age" for this book.

If you're looking for books along the same theme for that same aged teen, try Graceling by Kristen Carson. It's also fantasy, taking place in a world where a few children are randomly born with two different eye colors . . . and that means they are "graced" with superlative ability. It could be swimming, cooking, working with horses, or -- in the case of the main character -- killing. Since she was a small child, the main character's been working as the king's thug, but she's trying to break away from that role and become her own person. Throw in a love story, and it's an excellent book with some good themes. But don't bother with the rather new author's other book Fire.

The Capitol, obviously, must be defeated, and the Districts must be able to govern themselves.
Katniss' mother and sister must survive, though I can't imagine them being any more than background characters.
They'll find that District 13 is not toxic and is actually home to a large number of rebels. (Hey, this HAS to happen -- otherwise are they going to stay in that hovercraft for the entire third book? Gale says that District 12 is gone, and I can't imagine he'd be wrong about that.)
Katniss' friends from the second arena trip will be influential, especially Finnick.
Some people from the Capitol will join the rebels (remember, Cinna showed his true colors mid-book, even if it did cost him dearly).
Peeta -- IF he lives -- will become a reluctant politician; I can see a sober Haymitch at his side as an adviser.
Katniss will end up with Gale, who will be a soldier /local leader for the newly freed District 12 people.

Oh, yeah, someone will die. A victory can't come without cost, so it has to be someone about whom we care. Though he's such a good person, my money's on Peeta.

And I think it's a foregone conclusion that President Snow won't see the end of the book!

I hope Peeta doesn't die .. I figure President Snow wont make it :]

I'd LIKE to see Gale and Kat end up in District 13 living a free life. But I've learned that authors listen more to thier charecter's 'voices' than to the fans. What will happen will happen and I try to be open and hope that it will at least have an ending that is complete. (I HATE HATE HATE books that have ambiguous endings or ironic endings that just leave you sitting there going :confused3 WTH)

I think my 9 and 1/2 year old ds would like the books, but I mostly worry about the part where Peeta and Katniss are in bed together. I know nothing happens, but it seems kind of adult content. I probably worry too much!

What I want to happen is for Gale to end up with the mayors daughter, and Peeta to end up with Katniss. Then of course for the capital to be defeated and everyone is free. I am also hoping it is wrapped up and doesn't leave us hanging!

I understand your worry. I think that the books project it as a comfort more than a sexual thing.

On that note, this is a reason I would hold off on Graceling for a few years until my daughter is a bit older.

No! Them living in Distict 13 happily isn't enough. The Capitol has to be defeated! I can't imagine them being satisfied with creating a little cocoon of happiness for themselves, yet knowing that the people in all the other Districts are still out there in misery.

And I can't imagine this book ending in ambiguity. I thought the end of Book 2 was great -- finding out that District 12 is gone. They're going to be forced into action. I think Book 3'll end decisively.

I was a bit concerned about the bed-thing when it first came up, but I agree with your assessment: It's a comfort thing. They're both forced into this horrible situation, and they're just looking to avoid being alone.

Graceling DOES include some mild sex scenes (as well as some serious thought on the main character's part about whether she wants to become his lover without being his wife), but since my youngest is 13, I thought it was acceptable. You'll have to make that call for yourself.

But is District 12 "gone" as in blown off the map or has the district system simply crumbled? Or ? Apart from knowing that 12 was attacked, she is a nit vague.

I'm so waiting for this book!:lovestruc

This book sat in my closet for about 6 months. I was waiting for my son turn 13 to read it. In June I dug it out and read it. Then hand it to him to read. Of course, my hubby grab it and started it, He stayed up 2 nights to finish it.:rotfl: Then he said DS was to young to read this book. I said, What? He could read this last year!
I also, Have 19 yr who also read hungrer games and loved it. It was fun to hear my 2 kids talk about what ifs. My dd, said, I hope I would be brave enough to my brother place. My ds, I hope my sister take my place.

I have to no clue how she going to end it but I can't wait!!

Oh borders, is having hunger games fest

I can't wait!! I will go and get it at midnight if I can.

Team Peeta all the way. I just re-read the first two books and I still feel nothing for Gale as a character. That may be a factor of so much of his and Katniss' relationship happening off-screen. Their history and common bond...well, a lot of it has been telling and not showing. No other way for the author to do it due to the story structure BUT it leaves me feeling nothing for Gale. I get it, she loves him, but mostly because I've been told that, not because I got to feel it like I did her connection with Peeta. Less satisfying as a reader, KWIM? We got to see her love for Peeta grow in the present. I am invested in that relationship. Gale could die in chapter 3 and I would feel less than if it were Haymitch.

I read an article about Collins where she compared Katniss to Spartacus and noted that Spartacus died for his cause. I thought that was interesting & hopefully NOT a hint. I can't imagine Collins doing that in part because the books are first person present tense. But I thought the same thing about the protagonist in All Quiet on the Western Front and I got a big surprise at the end of that one, LOL!

I always visualized that Haysmich looked like Robert Wagner. It's a shame he is too old to play him.

If anyone has every seen Wicked the musical, the people of Oz are what I visualize the Capital citizens to be. :upsidedow

so?????

I am half way through, would be done but had to be somewhere tonight.

What does everyone think?????
