Flag Retreat - Patriotic and moving demonstration, held daily at 5 p.m., in Town Square's Municipal Park. If you're a veteran of the military, you might want to inquire at City Hall about acting as the Veteran of the Day during the flag lowering ceremony.
My husband, a Navy veteran, did this a couple of years ago. We went to City Hall first thing in the morning and signed him up. They told us to come back at a certain time where he would be shown what to do. Two security personnel walked him through the motions--stand, turn, lower, salute--and at 5 pm, a lovely and reverent ceremony ensued. That is...until the flag got stuck on the way down. The patriotic music is playing, dozens of Main Street CM's are circled around, I'm taking photos--and the flag gets snagged on the line. How does one escape from that unnoticed??? The CM's were incredibly apologetic--came up and shook my husband's hand and said "this never happens". I got some great shots of the 2 cops and my husband staring heavenward as if willing the flag to let go of its shackles. We can laugh about it now, but my husband did not appreciate my sense of humor at the time! At any rate, barring that one oops, all else was a moving and lovely moment. A picture of my husband and the security man was given to us for free, along with a rare pin that only those participating in this ceremony receive. I'd love for him to do it again! (He's not quite ready yet.)
