Okay - I guess I'm a whimp. We're going 8/30 and I'm quite nervous about Mission Space.

To all those who have ridden...how bad it is? The enclosed, dark, spinning aspect scares me. Does it spin fast and A LOT? The only other attractions I won't do because I'm chicken at WDW are Tower of Terror and Body Wars (actually, this doesn't scare me...it makes me sick).

Tell me if you think I'll survive and answer my poll. How would you describe Mission Space out of the following:

Scarier than Tower of Terror
More Nauseating than Body Wars
Not Scary at All
Pretty darn frigthening - chickens beware

C'mon - I know there are folks out there who have ridden Mission Space and can sympathize with a chicken.

There really is nothing to it! My wife or I never realized we were actually spinning, and if we hadn't seen some of the queue areas showing the "pods" spinning, we never would have known.

Follow the ride instructions, keep your head straight back and look straight ahead, and prepare for lift off!

I'm a coward and I was nervous before I went on Mission: Space, but....

It was great! And not scary at all. I can't wait to ride again. Follow the warnings to keep your head back and don't turn your head sideways. Also, don't close your eyes, you'll get the same dizzy effect! When we rode the second time, Gene decided to close his eyes to make hyper-sleep more realistic  and he got dizzy.

I'm a chicken as well. I admit it. You'll never get me on Rockin Roller Coaster or just about any coaster at any of the Busch Gardens or Six Flags, but I loved Mission: Space. It's really more "wow" than "eek" if you know what I mean. Nothing really scarry. It's just basically in good fun. It seemed less frightening than Tower of Terror and didn't seem as dark. I was a little concerned about it being such a small space as well and, really, wityh the screan in front of your face like that, you don't seem so confined.

I am an uberchicken when it comes to thrill rides. However, I already have an eight-day supply of Bonine for me and DH. Nothing will keep me from trying MS--unless of course my Test Track curse follows me there.

Mission Space is really fun!! I also wouldn't have known we were spinning had I not seen it on the outside monitors. (BTW, I don't like spinning AT ALL--can't do the Teacups! Ha!) It really feels like a blast off to space and is fun!! The strangest feeling is when you're taking off--but this is also the best part of the ride! Keep your head back and stare straight ahead at the video screen. (Oh, just in case, don't eat anything before going!) We loved it and so will you!! :bounce:

My family and I went on mission space just 1 week ago during a sneek peak session. I loved it and also, as others said, did not realize that I was spinning at all. The G forces pushing on me during the blast off were a little intense, but I got threw it. My famliy on the other hand were all queasy after getting off of this ride. Which is unusual for them. I quess it all depends on the person.

Hmmmm...judging from the posts I think I can do this. The lift off sounds a little scary.

Thanks everyone!

Anyone else care to comment?

The lift off is the absolute coolest part. I get queasy on Body Wars & Star Tours so I close my eyes, I get queasy on Tower of Terror, I think it's the sudden drop in the dark nothing to focus on that bothers me here, I rode Mission Space and I got a little queasy, but not as bad as Tower of Terror and it's not the same kind of virtual reality thing as Body Wars & Star Tours. I was very careful to keep my head back, DO NOT close your eyes, focus on the screen. I was fine during lift off, didn't feel the spinning at all, I began to get a little queasy during the hypersleep, I'm not sure how they achieve that floaty feeling, but that got me a little, then the video starts to get a little rough during the landing sequence. But nothing as intense as BW or ST. I would ride it again, just probably not twice in the same day. You absolutely must try it. It's not scary or fast like RnR coaster or ToT. It's the most unique ride I've ever been on.

DD and I just did three trips on Mission Space this past week. I rated it "not scary at all". It was pretty cool, though, especially the lift off part. I think they must have toned it way down from the pre-tests. During the part where they say something about zero gravity, nothing happens. You get a lot more weightless sensation on TOT! Diana

We didn't do very well.:(

Myself, DH and our 18 yr old DD went on it. I told them that it's important to keep their eyes straight ahead.

From the second it started, I knew that I was in trouble, which really surprised me. Neither DD or I have had a reaction to TOT, RnR, Body Wars, or the wilder rides over at Universal. I have no history of motion sickness and I've cruised on some choppy seas.

Once MS finally ended, DH got as far as the trashcan and got sick. DD knew she was going to get sick, so we asked where the nearest restroom was. The response, "Wonders of Life."

Once DH was feeling better, we headed over to Wonders of Life. Along the way we were directed around two piles of "you know what" that hadn't been cleaned up yet.

DD did make it to the restroom, but she was stopped in the doorway while they cleaned up a mess from someone who wasn't as lucky.

Since I hadn't eaten yet that day, I tried sipping some iced tea to get rid of the nausea. I ended up making myself get sick. :(

We'll never go again.

Regina, I'm so sorry that you and your family got sick on MS. It is such an awesome ride and I hate it that you don't want to ride it again but at least you tried it.

My DD and I rode it twice on Monday before we met you at the BCV members day activities. I got a little queasy both times at liftoff and a couple of other times during the ride but the feeling was over in a second or two. My DD said she only got queasy the first time. No aftereffects for either of us. My DH, of course, refused to ride because of the enclosed space but I'm hoping to talk him into it when we go in October. I think he would be fine because with the screen you don't feel closed in.

I voted that it wasn't scary at all, just thrilling!

I know that everyone doesn't do well on this ride but I can't wait to try it. I'm very happy to see the results of this poll! Not scary!

dvcreg,
did you close your eyes while you were on MS? I really want to try this ride but if it is going to make me sick I think I'll pass. I love TT but I hate the dropping feeling on any roller coaster or TOT.

Nope, I kept my eyes open and locked straight ahead at the screen. (I had read warnings about looking around on the board and they caution you about doing this on the ride.)

Like I said, I was very surprised. I don't get sick on rides. I've been on all sorts of roller coasters, I love simulators and I never expected to get sick. :( :( :(

A CM brought DH some paper towels. (While there's no restroom, there is a water fountain.) She quipped that they should install paper towel dispensers along the exit wall.

Personally, I think that airline barf bags might be a good idea.;)

Well, I was just over at Epcot today, and was scared to ride it (I admit it :) ). However, Corey (our Asst. Webmaster) decided to give it a try. He is (by his own admission), someone who gets nauseous on the Tea Cups, so he was a bit hesitant. He said that as long as he focused on the screen and didn't look away, he was fine. A CM that I spoke to said that about 16 or 17 people a day are getting sick on the ride right now. They consider anything under 1% "sick" acceptable. I will eventually go and try it since Corey emerged no worse for wear.

I hate spinning rides (yup, the Teacups). I love coasters!!! That said, mission space was awesome fun.

To me, it is like a simulator where what you feel coincides with what you see. The trick for me was to watch the screen so your body did not feel out of synch with the G's and motion in the ride. I did not feel any spinning. The ride is smooth as glass. Even though the space is small, you did have a vent pumping air at your faces to help you feel comfortable.

I felt a little odd after the ride, but no biggie. I talked with a CM who said they rode it five times consecutively and felt very drunk, though.

If your are very, very nervous about dark, small spaces, might want to skip it. But do not let the spinning stop you. It is not anything like Teacups.

My son hates the teacups - I knew that , he knew that...went on it anyway. He got sick.

The only time I felt queasiness was when I tried to lean out and look at him next to me...and then one time, when I closed my eyes for a second to see if I could feel the spinning. My DH often goes on these types of rides with us and just closes his eyes. He opted out of this one...and I'm glad he did. He would have been ill.

I think the ride is great. I LOVED the take off. It was incredible. BUT...I go on anything...so I'm not sure I'm a good judge. And, what surprised me, was when I leaned out to look over at my son, I could fee the motion.

I mentioned on another thread that it reminded me of the Round Up. I'll always remember the first time I went on that - I started to fight it a little. I was leaning out and against the rotation. A guy next to me said to lean back into the pocket - Like a seat, except you are standing of course. I leaned back and WOW - what a difference. I was fine and I've used that tip many times on other rides. When I pushed myself out to check on my son, it really reminded me of that same feeling on the round up. Not enough to make me sick...but I guess I can understand that some people might feel that the whole time, even when they are relaxing back in their seat??

My son was very big on "pushing the buttons" and he said later that he was so excited about being on the ride he thinks he kind of pushed out against the harness the whole time without realizing it. And, since he is one to get sick on the teacups, or even on the swings if they go a long time...

well - he ended the ride with two thumbs up, saying that was AWESOME - right before he vomited all over the floor of the pod.
