Missing the old Contemporary Room Decor

We stayed at the Contemporary on our trip last week (11/12 - 19) on the remodeled 10th floor. The new carpeting is nice and has the Contemporary's Jetson-style you'd expect to see.

However, we missed the old room decor that practically screamed "Disney." The new decor is nice, but it mostly screams "upscale hotel." We noted that the designers gave a passing homage by including a hidden Mickey, but other than that (and the fact that the new HD TV still has the same sad channel selections), you'd probably not know you were in a Disney hotel until you opened the door to hear Chef Mickey's and the monorail. :(

The room decor is very stylish with dark wood and earth tones. The desk area is nice, but the desk chair is not that comfortable for watching TV (but then again given the choice of channels Disney almost guarantees you won't do much of that). We liked the new drapes, which easily overlap to block out the light when you want to sleep late.

The beds are comfortable, but the new spreads are rather heavy. It's nice if the room is too cool, but given the motion-sensitive A/C, by the middle of the night the spread gets rather toasty. We usually tossed it off the bed sometime during the night.

The towel ladder in the bath is nice -- frees up space and makes the towels easy to grab. But the sinks -- well, they are nice Koehler sinks -- very wide, but not very deep. We found we had to be careful, otherwise water will easily splash on the walls and floor.

The coffee maker/supplies and fridge are now "hidden" beneath the counter between the two closets. The bellman advised us of this.

The "mantle" and faux fireplace are a nice touch... just enough light to see by. But overall, even with most or all of the lights on, we felt the room still seemed somewhat dark.

When we left on the 19th, remodeling was working on the 9th floor MK side.

The Contemporary is one of our favorite places to stay. I love the old decor. Several times a year we stay at nice hotels in downtown Chicago. Beautiful rooms. When I'm staying at a Disney hotel I want it to scream Disney. You won't find rooms themed like this anywhere else. I wish they would have refurbished it in the old decor or an updated version of the old decor. I'll miss it too :(

I never stayed there before the renovations started but my DH will now stay there since the rooms look a bit more upscale and contemporary. I'm sorry you miss the old decor :( I am glad to hear that some more MK view rooms are being worked on.

I didn't mind the old decor, but the new decor sounds beautiful. It reminds me of the Westin hotels.

That was my thought exactly when I walked in the door. The decor is beautiful and it's obvious that CR is aiming for a more upscale look overall. The decor does scream "Westin" now; to me that's a shame and a loss. But we'll probably go back anyway! :teeth:

What rooms should be requested if I would like to stay in a remodeled room?

Hey Tigger Magic....thanks for the update!!! Sounds like it's coming along!! We're heading to the Towers Dec 15th and have been wondering exactly where they're at with the rehab!! We, too, loved the old decor...and wonder what we'll think of the new. I have read so many opinions of how unattractive the old look was (I was beginning to think I was the only one who enjoyed it)!!!
I thought I read somewhere that there is only one floor being used for concierge....and I'm not sure if that means "light" or "club". We are trying to upgrade to either one B4 our trip. Any input??? :scratchin

Just guessing, but this might have something to do with being a large conference center hotel. The rooms need to be appropriate for the business crowd too. Besides the location, to me, the Contemp seemed to lack a lot as far as decoration. I still get this sterile feeling when I get off the monorail

I know the 10th floor is completely remodeled and that's the new Atrium Club (concierge "light"). When we left they were working on the 9th floor MK view rooms. I believe I read on another thread that some of the wing rooms are remodeled as well, but I don't know which wing (North or South).

I hope you have a wonderful vacation. And no, you're not alone in loving the old decor. Yes, it was loud and colorful but as I said, it really screamed "Disney."

The 14th floor is the full concierge floor; the 10th floor is the Atrium Club (or concierge light). They have breakfast foods and afternoon snacks. The concierge staff are available pretty much all day now. Upgrading to the 14th floor might be tough because it's usually sold out way in advance. I'd call Disney and see if any 10th floor rooms are available.

I showed DH the pictures of the new rooms on the internet and we both agree it just looks like an upscale resort rather than Disney. To me THE resort that really did scream 'Disney" was the CR, with the bright rooms, monorail, wonderful views. It's too bad they didn't come up with something "Disney", but still more modern. If you want Westin, well, there's the Swan, and between OKW, SS, BWI and Villas, Yacht Club/Beach Club, and Grand Floridian, I think they certainly have that "clapboard" style covered and then the several "Carribbean/Hawaii type ones. I always thought that AKL, WL and CR were kind of unique in theming, but CR the most "Disney-ish".
