Missing school could cost you money...

Very interesting. They have a similar thing like that here in England. Both my kids attend British school and they implemented something similar a couple of years ago. The difference is that you get something like 10 days of unauthorized leave before you get fined. I think the fine is about 500 british pounds.

When we went to WDW back in '02 I pulled my son out of school at the time (we were in the states then) and the school suggested I put him on homeschooling for the time we would be gone. This way the school was not out any money for my son missing, plus they gave me all the work that he needed to do while we were gone. I think he missed a total of 7 days. I thought that was cool. then when we came home, back to school he went. Fantastic.

I'm still trying to figure out their math (the new math?). If they get X dollars per student attending, and one doesn't show, why do they still need the money?

Just because a family chooses to take a ski trip doesn't mean the school needs fewer crayons or text books or that the janitor is taking the day off. Those are budgeted expenses.

Well. I guess they could prorate the teaches salary and tear a few pages out of the texts..........

I find it disgusting, and illegal.

The States are mandated to provide a FREE education.
(I notice that they aren't 'demanding' but only 'requesting' payment. They have no right to demand any payment.)

This is just another instance where the school districts are WAY out of line. They have already crossed every conceivable boundary with their 'expectations'. And, they wonder why parents don't 'respect' them, and why parents in record numbers are turning to private schools and homeschooling.

When is this country going to wake up the educational crisis that is going on?

And the solution is...? What "expectations" are excessive? By the way, private Catholic schools close every year here in Chicago for lack of attendance. Most people I personally know who have tried homeschooling have gotten in way over their heads and have sent their kids back to public school. My sister-in-law had a heart attack at the age of 37 trying to do too much, including homeschooling her kids. I do, however, have a beef with the way some schools are funded. It is inherently inequitable.

I wonder how many suckers wrote the check! As if the taxpayers of California aren't paying enough.

Yeah, and she still hasn't slowed down much. She is no longer home-schooling the older boys but they have adopted yet another child. I think she is at least taking better care of herself and being monitored regularly. Very scary.

Yes but I was under the impression that tax dollars paid for education and down here in FL "supposedly" the lotto money is going towards that also, I don't think anyone should be prorated or charged for their child not being in school....heck if that is the case that the education system figures out what they need money wise by attendence it's wrong it should be strictly on enrollment. And then you have to take into consideration that many pay for education who do not even have kids....so in actuallity they are getting money for no one.

Don't know!!!

I feel sorry for all the poor children who won't be able to afford missing school the way the rich kids do. ;)

I agree. I think it will be a status symbol for some parents to write out that check:guilty:

The crazy thing is they are concerned about the money not the kids. They don't really care that the child is missing school just that they are not getting their money for said child.

The parents that are going to get those letters are the ones they figure can afford to pay.

One day when I was picking up my son from school there was a boy my sons age (9) there to get his sister. He had not been in school that day and when the teacher, who was outside, asked him why he wasn't in school he said because he didn't want to go. She told him he needed to come to school everyday unless he was sick, he just shrugged. I asked my son if he is absent a lot and he said yes all the time. He was very nonchalant about it. I worked in the work room where I heard things I probably shouldn't have and this family gets a pass because they are immigrants from Russia and just understand.

The problem is that school funding varies state by state. Here in Illinois a portion of our property taxes go directly to our local school district. Additionally, the districts receive state and federal funding based on enrollment. I don't know if attendance is considered here as it is in California. I agree that it is ridiculous for parents to reimburse the school for money that the state is supposed to provide - enrollment, not attendance, should be used to determine funding (unless, perhaps, a child is chronically truant). But we all pay taxes for things we don't utilize or agree with, so those who don't have children or whose children are not in school still have to carry their share of the tax burden. There are pleny of roads I don't drive on, military actions I disagree with, "art" I don't find of value, social security I may never receive, etc. I can't simply protest that I don't use these "services" so I am not paying for them. It is part of living in a society.

I think the school has instituted this program just so that we have something here on the DIS to talk about. ;)

Wow, that would come to $722 per month for public school education. Around here, I could send DD to a great private school for about that.
