Missing school could cost you money...

OK, I will dissent.

It is a request for $36.13 per day, not a demand.

It is requested for vacation type absences, not illness.

What is the big deal? Frankly, it is not a bad idea.

:confused3

Yep, let's pay the school for extra days off... GREAT idea!

The school has no right to ask for anyone to pay to take their time off when they feel it is necessary, or best. As long as my child is in school for the minimum number of days required, then they can butt out.

I don't expect to have to get their permission, or to pay them for a thing.

1) It's California, and since I don't live there, I don't care. If parents are dumb enough to pay it, then so be it.

2) If I did live in California and I decided to take my kids out for a vacation, I would laugh in the face of anyone that "requested payment" for the missed days.

Up for auction...

Days off from school...

Pay to get out of your childs education...

Bids starting at $36.50...
Do I hear $40.00...
How about $45.00...

Heck, do you all remember the recent thread about having to pay $$$ for the kid to go to the Doctor and get a doctors excuse every single time to prove that it is an excused absence. Well, heck, that fee could be a heck of a lot cheaper than making an unnecesarry trip to the doctor for a bad cold or flu.

Boy, this lends a whole new meaning to the phrase "Buying Time".

I just can't fault the small school district for trying to recoup tow to three hundred thousand dollars in revenue.

No mind you , I do not approve of how the schools are funded on many different levels. This funding perday of actual attendence is obscure. I have even bigger issues with loss of revenue that occures when standardized test scores are not good. It has caused teachers to teach to the test and how cann that focus be good?

It's only a request, and those parents who actually paid it are chumps. If I wanted to pull my kid out of school for a few days to head south, then I will.

Cool!! It's like DVC points, only for school! :thumbsup2 Can I just pay $1,000 upfront and get 20 FVC (Family Vacation Club) points a year? :lmao: :lmao:

:rotfl2: That was my thread, and when I read the article I was thinking, "Gee, I should tell the school we're going on vacation when the kids get sick."

Don't mean to hijack, but that's not such a worry anymore. Our insurance came through a month early, so that $80 doctor's appt will now be $10.

I just can't understand how a kid missing school costs the school money?

Does anyone have any idea? :confused3

I would pay in a heartbeat. My DD's get zeros factored in for every day they miss unexcused. I would love to pay for them to not get zeros.
Think about it this way. You pay for your car every day whether you drive it or not. You pay for your house if you are out of town. I think it is perfectly reasonable to expect to pay for the school if they are missing out of funding because of a choice I made to pull my child out.
If any of you have been involved in PTA type asscoiations, you can attest to the tight funding out there. This is a small thing I can do so I would do it.

Yes, and through taxes, you are paying for school every day, whether you use it or not. What this district wants is to charge you again.

If people are dumb enough to pay it, more power to them, but I wouldn't.

The individual school is funded by the number of days a kid is in school. If he misses a day the school loses that money. It obviously is a flawed way of funding, but it is how it has been done in CA for years.

I don't think it would be an issue, but more and more folks are pulling their kids out for family vacations. It use to be rare, now it is commonplace.

obviously folks are trying to beat the crowds or bad weather.....our schol district had several years of "modified year round " scheduling which gave two atypical vacation weeks. Many took advantage of the opportunity (I know I did) but parents requiring child care had a tough time with making arrangements. I wish that schedule would comeback.

Here, they lose money on days the kids aren't in school. Our elementary school has been in trouble quite a few times thanks to stricter NCLB rules. They're supposed to have a certain percentage of attendance (95%, I think) and the school hasn't met that, so they get penalized on top of losing that state money. For two years, the school has had to offer an alternative option to send the kids to a different school, which again costs them money. I don't know anyone who has used that option, but still.

Yes you pay taxes, but the money doesn't filter to the school unless your kid is there. They have tried to get that changed, but this is .....California.

I understand that, but as a parent, outside of working to change the law, that isn't my problem. If I'm paying taxes, then public schools are there for me to use, and I shouldn't feel pressured to pay extra if I choose to take the kids out for vacation.

How much do I get to charge the school for teacher absenteeism? I think it's a HUGE problem, particularly in the high school here. "Luckily" the worst offender in the school...Pre-Calc Honors teacher (which makes it extremely difficult to find a sub who can actually TEACH it)...just got promoted (for a job well done???) to the position of Asst Principal. At least with the new teacher to replace her, it appears I don't have to worry that my child isn't actually being TAUGHT when she goes to school.

And yes, I do know that some teachers are taking school days out for DisneyWorld; unfortunately, these are teachers I really like and have a close bond with, which is why they've shared the info with me.

I'm not going to complain to the school about teacher absenteeism...I grit my teeth and bide my time...my youngest graduates HS in 4 years :thumbsup2 ...but let them charge ME for taking my kids out of school when I so choose for family events, and they'll hear about it...loudly.
