We just missed an exact change only toll on 429 and the 'pay by mail' envelopes were all gone. I know that we'll have a penalty to the toll road but I would like to avoid paying the missed toll penalty to Hertz. I called the toll road but they are not there today. Will I be able to pay the missed toll by mail on the rental or will I have to wait for it to make it to Hertz and pay them? I'm annoyed as it was only 50 cents and I'm afraid it's going to cost me $25 or more.

Do they have a web site? Same thing happened to me on a cross country trip....didn't realize you had to exit highway to pay toll. I went online for the state and was able to pay online, it asked me for day, time, plate and color of car. Save receipt, make copy for rental company, and say a prayer it works!

Good Luck!

Have you returned the car to Hertz yet? if not, they may be able to help you.

A few years ago, we didn't have any change and we were getting off the highway at one of those exact change, unmanned tolls. (Now you can use a cc, but this was before that option.)

When we returned the car to Alamo at the end of the trip, we explained what happened and they said they'd take care of it. We never got a bill for the unpaid toll.

Oh well. It looks like we're going to have to pay for the PlatePass which is $24.75 plus the 50-cent toll. We didn't plan on taking a toll road so we didn't have any available change. What a PITB.

I got stuck paying a penalty to Alamo for missing a toll, and I know 100% that I did not miss a toll. I even brought a roll of quarters with me from home for the tolls. All I can think of is that one time I drove off before the light turned green? I did not SPEED thru, since I was tossing in quarters one at a time.

I was so POed and was going to fight Alamo, but just tried to forget about it. Until now. :headache:

Sorry to bring up bad memories!

I swear, I'm not going to get into a rental car without a pocket full of change now!

Is it possible to pay the toll online? This happened to me while visiting Illinois. I was able to go online with the IL Toll road and enter the booth info and my car info (license plate). I paid the toll with my credit card. Hertz never charged me the fee because they never received the letter from IL demanding payment.

We actually drove up to pay a toll and the sun pass paid first. So we were charged by budget the $25 for using the pass. I was so mad too. Now I always check to make sure there isn't a pass in the car. Not exactly you experience but frustrating ... To pay $25 for a $.50 toll one time.

We had something like this happen with Avis one trip. We are a member of their loyalty club, and the car they assigned to us had two car seats in it--definitely not our car. So, they reassigned us to a different car. We had never noticed that there was a doohickey with a lever in the cars. When we drove up to the first toll booth, we tried to pay the toll, but the woman waved us through. She was nice enough to explain about the doohickey, and told us to lower the lever to turn it off. When we arrived to the hotel, we called Avis, because they had something like a $10 per day for the term of the rental for the doohickey, whether we used it or not. So, we too were going to be charged something like $50 for a 50 cent toll. So, we complained, and I told Avis that I could rent from a different company, and I did. We finally got the doohickey charge reversed.

I rented a car for work in Dallas last summer from National. Their toll roads have no cash option. They charged me $4 a day only for the days I used it, which was the days I went from and to the airport. There were 4 tolls each way, it was about $9 total each way incl the charge. I think that was fair. The only problem was it took 2 or 3 weeks for the charge to show up on my credit card so I had to do a separate expense account. There was no pass in the car, the state charged by plate number.

That is how Alamo rentals in Florida work as well. According to their website, they charge a "TollPass Convenience Charge of $3.95 for each day you use a toll express lane on roads covered by their TollPass provider, up to a maximum of $19.75 per rental, plus the cost of all unpaid tolls."

The daily cost used to be lower making it an easy decision for us to use the service. At $4 for each day you use a toll road it stings a bit if you are using toll roads often during your stay. We usually do a one-way rental (airport to WDW, keep the car a few days then drop if off at the Dolphin and use DME back to the airport) and usually encounter toll roads only on the drive from the airport to WDW. So we usually only pay the $4 charge one day and find it's worth it just to get to WDW a little faster!
