When doing my current taxes on turbo tax I noticed an error. My 5 year old was listed as EIC (??) and not included for my child deductions for 2009. I have no idea why, they transfer the info from year to year. I did verify the 3 children I had at the time. So, now I can amend my 2009 taxes. Does anyone know if this will be worth it, refund wise?

I would think it is worth it. The year that the accountant transposed two digits on my daughters social security number, the IRS kicked out the deduction for her (we didn't get the child credit that year because we didn't qualify income wise), and as a result our refund was something like $800 smaller than we expected. Luckily, it was easy to fix the error (we just had to call with the correct ss #) and we got our $800 quickly.

So yeah, I think it's worth filing the ammended return.

Turbo tax said they had an error in their system. It's their fault, my info is correct. I can't believe they did not let me know sooner! I don't understand how to correct since it said to amend my 2009 but she is entered on the info I have in the computer, she's just not in the info they efiled to IRS. I can't correct the info under turbo tax since she's in there. When I print my full 2009 taxes, she's not listed. I assume I'll need extra form to fill out. Do I need one for the fed and state? What a mess! :confused3

You need to file a 1040x to amend your return. The 1040x is a summary of how the corrections affect your liability. Your state probably has an amended return too.

Sort of curious about the TT error. Are you saying that the refund you received did not agree with what what the software was showing due to an e-filing error? I would take this issue up with TT first.

I am pretty sure if you go through TurboTax, they will walk you through how to do the amended return.

Turbo tax has quite a few glitches this year.....they really aren't giving me a whole lot of confidence in filing. I have to wait until the 17th or so when all the forms get finalized so I hope they have them fixed by then.

So how did you know that you were missing a child? Just because of the transfer of information? We didn't transfer our information this year, but it would be interesting to see if this was a glitch that hit many people or just you.

I would definitely file an amended return....that could be more money in your pocket :)

I thought the same thing! There were 2 instances in TT this year that I had to go hunt for a place to include something very basic. If I hadn't done taxes before I would not have known I was supposed to include these to my benefit. I have never questioned TT before (except the year where they added so much junk software to the program I wouldn't install it) Now I am thinking I ought to enter all my information into another program and check TT.

It's worth filing the amendment to the return. It's going to be extra money in your pocket.

I did my taxes too quickly this year and already noticed something that I need to amend. It's going to get me an extra $700.
