Here it is: DRESS SHOPPING, ROUND 1. Mindyjoy vs the wedding dress industry.

Here's the thing about me. I don't wear dresses, and I never ever wear white. The last thing I want to wear EVER is a white dress. Yet, here I was, making appointments to try on poofy white dresses. I had a sinking feeling in my stomach the entire drive to the first store. I had visions of that episode of SatC where Carrie tries on wedding dresses and breaks out in hives.

And then, I get the first dress on ... and it wasn't so bad. It took me a while to warm up to it, but by the end of the day, I admitted it was actually fun.

The first store I went to was a specialty bridal boutique in Glendale. I chose this store because they were having a Maggie Sottero trunk show. In tow was my FMIL visiting from Rhode Island, my BFF, and my good friend Valerie. FMIL was in charge of taking iphone pictures and BFF was in charge of taking notes. Valerie was there to give her no-nonsense opinion which is why I love her.

My consultant was okay. I gave her a quick description of what I wanted - something interesting, something with color, some kind of sleeve or the ability to add sleeves, NO STARK WHITE, tea length, something to go with a daytime garden theme. I also asked about the one Maggie I'm in love with (Dallas Marie) and they didn't have it. BOOOOO! Overall she was very nice and attentive but I feel like she just pulled random things.

Without further ado, I give you, DRESS P0RN.

DRESS #1

Maggie - Shelby. The color is alabaster and if I end up getting a Maggie, it will be this color for sure.

5484481830_463e986986.jpg

Since this was the first dress, I liked it, but after trying on others I know this is not "the one."

DRESS #2

5484482052_e2336d3be9.jpg

I can't remember if this was a Maggie or not, I don't think so. But the general consensus was that it's a bit "old" for me. (Notice the clenched fists and look of trepidation on my face.)

DRESS #3

Another nameless Maggie. Didn't love the white and didn't love the flower, but this was a favorite all around. Notice I unclenched my fists, yay!

5483888243_7e43d514af.jpg

But then I made this face - :lmao: - which pretty much sums up how I feel about shopping for wedding dresses. :rotfl:

DRESS #4

Maggie - Catarina

I liked the neckline of this one but not the lace.

5484484026_65e69feff2.jpg

It had this cool flower strap you could put wherever you want, basically. I thought that was fun.

DRESS #5

Here's the one tea length dress they had.

5483889639_d11898388b.jpg

This produced my first almost smile of the appointment. (Notice the sash - I said I wanted a pink sash and what she brought in was more of a rust color. No bueno.)

BFF tried to improve it. But this is still a no.

5483889883_bffd089a4a.jpg

DRESS #6

I asked my consultant if I could try on a mermaid shape, just to see how it looked. She brought me a bright white dress.

5483890137_88d4f05254.jpg

Notice the clinched fists are back. I didn't mind the shape but I pretty much hated this dress. NEXT!

DRESS #7

Sottoro & Midgley - Adorae Louise

5483891193_d7c05eac7a.jpg

The consultant picked this because it had sleeves, but she didn't realize until she got it out of the bag that this was a plus sized dress. It was a size 24 and I'm a 10!!!! So she got some clips and clipped it back so I could get a general idea of the shape. So I supposed it's a testament to how much I loved this dress that I loved it even though I was swimming in it.

DRESS #8

This was by Allure, style #8750.

5484486740_8ed927cdcf.jpg

I liked the strap, but notice the one clinched fist.

5484486998_0a9d56c72f.jpg

They eventually got a smile out of me on the last dress.

I need to split this into two parts due to all the images.

Dress shopping part 2!

MOVING ON to David's Bridal in Burbank. As we parked at David's Bridal and got out of the car, it started to hail/sleet, which is EXTREMELY BIZARRE for So Cal and the first time I had ever seen hail. I joked that I always thought it would be a cold day in h*** if I ever went wedding dress shopping, and I was pretty close.

I checked in at David's Bridal right at my appointment time. I entered all my info into the website the day before, but they told me that it wouldn't show up in their system yet (HUH?) and I had to fill out a form. Then I waited about 10 minutes for a consultant to be ready. My consultant was helping two brides at the same time and asked if I would be okay with that. I said sure. She asked my size and measured me, and asked me what style I was looking for. I told her I wanted to try on all the Vera Wang gowns and any tea length gowns they had. Meanwhile, my entourage had been milling about the store and had begun pulling things for me. So my consultant showed me to a room and went to pull stuff, but I decided to go ahead and start on the ones my entourage pulled.

DRESS #9

5484487396_e658190cd7.jpg

It had pockets!!!! But that was about the only good thing about it. This was a big "fat" no.

DRESS #10

5484488396_567a77d7de.jpg

BFF pulled this dress for me and I loved it. However, it had a bit of a yellow tinge and overall was a bit too boring, but I did like how it fit me.

DRESS #11

5484489778_2b49b6ee60.jpg

Another tea length, this one much better than the first, but still not very flattering and still kind of boring. Maybe I'm not meant for a tea length dress???? :confused3 My whole world is starting to turn upside down.

DRESS #12

This. This is the reason I came to David's Bridal. This dress. When I came out in this dress, everyone's eyes lit up for the first time, which is what I had been waiting for.

I really wanted a pink dress and this might be it. If I can add some sleeves and some bling to it. As the days go by, I find myself thinking about this dress more and more.

DRESS #13

Lucky number 13 ... not so much.

5484493116_4946b17f06.jpg

DRESS #14

5484492702_b092da3cf0.jpg

Loved the flower detailing on this dress but it was very heavy. Still, it is a contender.

DRESS #15

5484493516_68b9760fe8.jpg

Trying a different silhouette. Valerie vetoed it before I could even get on the pedestal. Next!

DRESS #16

I had high hopes for this dress, I really did.

5483901517_3019f15f20.jpg

I must say, I had a lot of fun wearing this dress. But Valerie pointed out there would be no room for DF on the aisle if I wore this dress. So, as fun as it was, it's not my wedding dress.

DRESS #17

5483903181_eec7b1a70d.jpg

Valerie had picked this dress hoping the flowers could come in pink. Nope. Next!

DRESS #18 - the grande finale

5483903759_f1ed708b1b.jpg

I despise pick-ups but it was one of the few dresses you could add pink detailing.

5484499714_34ef9e9f83.jpg

I want a pink corset, but not that badly.

WOW, if you made it through all that, congratulations!!!! :rotfl:

So what does everyone think?? :confused3

Wow, you are good with taking pictures!! I will say that the mermaid shape looks really great on you! Very figure flattering, if you could find the right dress.

My absolute favorites are #7, #12, and #14. #14 I've tried on myself and I love the texture at the bottom of it! =] I already have my dress, I am a Maggie bride myself, hehe.

I think #7 has more of a glamourous feel and will really make you shine! #12 in the pink is totally unique though! But I have to say if I had to chooose.. hmmmm... maybe #7? Just more of a look at me I'm the bride! kinda feel?? =]

Hope I helped a little bit. The other ones are kinda lacking pizazz? But idk if that's what you are looking for...

Loving all of the dress pictures, and the commentary!! :lmao: Clenched fists are definitely a sign that it is not your dress!

I really love the pink dress on you!! It is sooo unique!!!

I think in regards to the other store I really liked #1 and #7, I guess it depends if you want straps or not, as well as bling or not? Although you could always add a beaded or crystal belt to #1!

It was so nice to see some of the Vera Gowns on a person!! :) They are beautiful!!!

I would say that was a very successful gown shopping day!! Do you have any changed opinions? Still like the tea-length?

I want something a little unique, that no one's ever seen before. The consultant said that #12 is the most popular of the Vera Wang dresses, which made me cringe a little, since I don't want to wear what everyone else is wearing! But then she said no one had ordered it in pink yet, which made me feel okay again.

There was a girl next to me who was an adorable, very slender asian woman, and she tried on all the Vera gowns and she looked stunning in all of them. I tried on four Vera gowns (#12, #13, #15, #16) and only #12 worked. The ballerina gown bodice looked nice but the bottom was just silly.

I liked #1 too! I learned that I can work a mermaid shape and it actually ended up being one of my favorites (#7) and that the tea length dresses aren't very flattering on me. :( I still like the IDEA of a tea length but I'm not sure I"ll find a good one.

Okay, I shouldn't have said that #7 and #12 were my favorites, because now I'm going to wonder if people are just being nice and going along with my opinion. I really want to know!

I love #'s 12 and 14. I think the pink dress is just amazing and it looks so beautiful on you. I love the bottom detailing on both of those dresses so much.
When I went to David's Bridal my consultant had another person at the same time as me and it was a little bit confusing and ended up waiting on her a lot when she was helping the other bride.

I waited a bit at times but it wasn't too bad. My consultant was actually very efficient, although she was quiet and didn't really offer too many helpful opinions or suggestions, like the consultant at the first place did. It was more like the DB consultant was just trying to make it through the day rather than making a sale.

Thank you for the compliment, I really love the pink dress! :cutie:
