they were saying that even if a US citizen doesn't agree with the war they have respect for the men and women risking their lives.
Can't agree more. I am no fan of the Iraq war but I have total respect for all our military people (who are made up of people from England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland) doing the job they have been told to do on our behalf even if it is not actually what the majority of the British people that want them in Iraq. At end of the day they are doing a job that frankly many of us would admit to not wishing to under take ourselves so where you agree or disagree we should all agree that they should be treated with respect and looked after when the come back home as all to often they are called up for wars that everyone agrees pretty much on at some stage or another.
The US have more pride in there country than we do, imagine if you flew a flag outside your house in the UK, you would get called a Racist or if you come from my neck of the woods you be seen as a Rangers fan looking to stir trouble with Celtic fans... completely nuts as I can't think of to many other places where you can't flay your own country flag.. Not that I actually want to, but hey I should have that choice and not made to feel bad about it.
What people need is respect for themselves and others, I think its healthy to have pride in ones nation, if we truly had pride we wouldnt be treating our elderly people in the appalling way we are, almost everyone of that generation made a sacrifice so all of us could enjoy the lifestyle we have today. But instead of the younger generation giving them the respect they deserve, many elderly are too afraid to walk the streets at night. However I have a good feeling that this doesnt apply to the folk on this forum as I am sure they where and their children are brought up to respect themselves and the people in there community

Mmm, ok that was a bit heavier conversation that I am used to getting into, I will put it down to the post pointing out one very clear thing you do notice when you visit the States and I think a smaller dosage would be good for everyone here as we did after all send many of our good people to live in the states many years ago including an Irish chap called Arundel Disney (Walts Great Grandfather)
