Mike' Make Over Madness!

Buffy - I think you're right on about most of being willing to walk on fire for others but rarely take any time to take care of ourselves. I'm hoping to change that "habit!" And keep the quotes coming, I love them!

Tracy - Thank you! And we'll see how this reconnection goes. I hope it brings positive things for us both. We'll see!

So had an interesting happening yesterday that kind of upset me a little. One of my best friends, who is very excited about my healthy me initiatives, and I were emailing back and forth about a few things yesterday. He's one of the people who has encouraged me to set concrete close and long range goals, and has said he'll do whatever he can to support my efforts. So I decided to tell him about my goal with the Stair Race and asked if he'd join in with me next year. I added that this year's race is next week so it is way too soon. He responded, "It's only like 600 stairs. I'll do it with you next week." His intention is support, but I just realized I don't think he really gets the shape I am in and how 600 stairs would be physically impossible at this point. I mean, I walk up about 15 stairs when I get home every day and that is a challenge with my stamina as it is and my knees as they are. I wrote back stating that I appreciated his support in doing it but I definitely need more than a week to be ready to do it. He didn't respond. Which is not odd for him, but I think he believes that I am just afraid to do it and that I could if I wanted to just apply myself.

And honestly, yes, fear is a part of it for me, but not fear that I could not make it up the stairs but fear that over exerting myself like that could injure my knee and set me back. I know that increased activity is something I need to transition into. I just wish he could see that. He is incredibly fit and I think he processes all of this in the context of how he feels. I think he thinks I should be able to do everything he can just a bit slower because I'm carrying more weight. He doesn't get that living for so many years so massively overweight has taken a toll on my body. I price I pay every day for my out of control indulgence. I think this is affecting me not just because of him but because it makes me reflect on how often people just do not understand what it means to live carrying 100, 200, heck 400 extra pounds. So just as I am feeling proud of myself for making some major changes and positive choices for myself I run into someone who seems to think I am already not trying hard enough. Sigh. I know it's not his intention but it still stings.

Hey Mike. I hear you about your friend. My own mind does that to me. I think, eh I'm kinda fit I can run for 30 minutes without stopping. Yeah, no. The body just isn't there yet. Unfortunately your friend has never walked a mile in your shoes so to speak so it's not registering in his brain.
If you haven't been active then no, I wouldn't risk doing the stairs this year. Your body is not used to the movement. I would also not risk doing the stairs until you've talked to your doctor to make sure your body and organs can handle it.
Is it 600 steps up and 600 down? Or 600 total?
I think you need to keep talking to your friend. Keep the line of communication open with him. And if stairs are your goal then we need to find you stairs to practice on. If 15 stairs is what you can do, then for the month of March you do 15 stairs. April you make it 20-25. We need to get smaller stepping stone goals to be able to reach your bigger goals. A runner trains for a marathon, your friend wouldn't go run 26 miles just because he's fit. Unless he's a runner by nature then his body has to build up endurance too. The stairs are your marathon.

When I was doing the training for the 5K at Disney, I didn't go run 3 miles the first day. I used Couch to 5K and I literally felt like I was going to die after 60 seconds of running. It's a 12 week program that builds up endurance to run 3 miles. You need to build up endurance to do stairs. It will come, just keep trying.

Great post, Buffy!:thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

Mike, it sounds like your friend doesn't completely understand what you are going through. I think keeping the lines of communication open is a great way to help him have some understanding. Remember.... You know your body, you know your situation. You have to do what is best for YOU! ::yes::

As always thanks so much for your perspectives and input Buffy & Tracy!

You're both right, he doesn't have the experience or perspective to know where I am in my body right now. We'll talk. He'll tell me he understands but I know a part of him won't. It just will be what it is. He's more of a show me, than tell me person.

Anyway, the Stair Race itself is 600 steps straight up! And you're right Buffy, it will take training. The official race site itself encourages training for the race. So while it may be no big deal to my friend, even the race acknowledges it is a challenge. lol.

Hope you're both having great Valentines Days! As for me, as a second job I host trivia at pubs on Sunday and Monday nights, and this week I agreed to cover tonight for a co-worker so he could take his wife out. Being single I could not really turn the extra money down! So that is where I will be tonight. Also covering an extra night Thursday. It is a wild week here. lol.

Have fun tonight Mike! Valentine's Day around here is fight night!! LOL We tend to duke it out on Feb 14th.

Do you do trivia at Ri Ra?? We've been there once a long time ago and the food was pretty good. Some day we'll make it up there again, it's not that far from here.

I bet 20 bucks your friend can't do the stairs cold either. Doing stairs is soooo much harder than running a flat surface.

On my bucket list I want to do the 1/2 marathon on the Great Wall of China but a lot of that is stairs. I'm terrified!

Hope your V-Day wasn't too much of a battle Buffy! The 1/2 Marathon on the Great Wall sounds intense!! A great goal though! I do love Ri Ra myself, but I do not do trivia there, sadly. lol.

I had a good talk with another friend (the one who is helping me with my gym stuff) about the stair race and he completely agrees that it would be way too much for me at this point and would either end with me injured or so discouraged that it would just not be good mentally for my motivation. He knows my other friend and he pointed out some good things for me to remember about that friend's attitudes, etc. So it felt good to get some validation.

My Valentine's evening was pretty good. Trivia went well. Oh, and the universe threw me a HUGE sign that it is time to kick soda completely. I was drinking a Schwepp's ginger ale on the drive home and got pulled over because a cop thought it was a beer. lol. He was embarrassed and let me go without a ticket or anything but it certainly got my heart racing! lol

Mike hysterical about the ginger ale!!! :lmao: I'm glad you got some validation from your other friend, sometimes it's easy for me tos tart to doubt myself based on a friend's comment. Maybe your stairclimbing friend can wear 100 pounds of weights and try exercising that way - he'll have a different perspective on what you are going through and how dedicated you are. :thumbsup2

So funny that you mention that idea Jenn, it is something I am going to suggest to him when I see him Friday.

Doubt is such a powerful thing and something that I have struggled with my entire life. It can be accompanied by such a paralyzing fear that we continue to live with the negatives. Doubt makes it easy to accept things we know we shouldn't. Story of my life it seems. But something I am working on!!! :-)

Jenn, I was thinking the same thing too! Like on Biggest Loser where the contestants have that final challenge where they put the weight on that they lost and have to typically run up a mountain or something. They really do see how far they have come.
I know Bob Harper had to do it for a challenge too. He learned a lot about what the contestants go through carrying all that weight. Just putting on the vest and a few weight belts made him winded and he had to sit down, then he needed help getting back up.

Mike, I'm glad you talked to another friend. It's definitely good that you are talking with a lot of people who are close to you so you can get different points of view on how to move forward. Doubt is an ugly thing isn't it? But when it does creep up look back at the list of things you've accomplished since your journey started. Don't doubt your abilities because you've had some grand successes!

V-Day was a non event this year. No time to fight!! We are still recovering from being sick and we're having some teenage drama with the oldest. His girlfriend is exhibiting some self destructive behaviors and we are trying to figure out how to proceed. Hopefully we can get someone to listen so she can get some help.

OK, I need to get off my butt and get dinner started. We are having a slow cooker day so I have to make dinner at lunch time. LOL
Have a great afternoon everyone!!

Mike let me know if you get your 15 stairs in today!

That is too funny about the ginger ale, Mike!:rotfl:

I'm glad that you had a good talk with your friend. :thumbsup2

Have a wonderful Wednesday!:goodvibes

Morning Mike!!

Just wanted to pop in and see how things were going. I have 7 more minutes on the computer before I need to start chores for the day (trying to spend less time here)
Anyway wanted to say thanks, you've re-motivated me to get my butt in gear. I updated my iPod Nano and have it on with my pedometer running. 1269 steps so far today (goal is 10,000).
Anyway, I hope you have a great day!!!! Hope you stop in later!

Hi All! Hope you're having a great Thursday. Pretty stressful here, but then what is new. Loads to get done at work today and I am solo in the office, which is always. Also working my second job tonight, which will make it the 5th night in a row that I am not getting til bed til after midnight, which I loathe as I have to be up a little after 5am for job number one. But I am going out tomorrow night with a huge group of friends, who are actually part of the stress at the moment as I am trying to coordinate too many people that hate scheduling anything, lol. But it will be nice once we are all out and about. :-)

I am running to Walmart today to grab some supplies I need for a new start, including new towels for the gym and pool and I want to get a 32oz water bottle so I know that drinking it plus one refill helps me hit my daily goal!

Glad to give you a boost back onto your own track Buffy, I appreciate your support too! Good job with the pedometer! When I got home yesterday I walked up the 16 stairs to my apartment and then once at the top went up and down twice again for good measure. It kicked my butt a bit was nice! :yay:

Oops, there goes the office phone again. I better get it! Hope that everyone has a GREAT day! :cheer2:

Way to go Idaho!!!!! Awesome job on the stairs! That is just so great!
Sorry you have to work late, that bites. I hope you have a good time out with your friends. (time for a tiny lecture) no alcohol! To many empty calories, your calories need to count. Ok?? Alright I won't ride you anymore about that. ;)

Oh, new towels. Love new towels. Big fuzzy ones!! And make sure your water bottle is BPA free!! We don't need any added chemicals in your water.

OK, 3 minutes left to DIS before I have to start the brat roundup. Oh I mean picking up my lovely little angels from school. LOL

Have a great afternoon Mike!!

Happy Friday all!

I could lie, but I will be honest and tell you I can make no promises about the alcohol Buffy as we are going to a Guinness party. But I have had this event planned as my last big dinner out "hurrah" before I get 100% on plan. So I am not worried.

Got my towels, and an awesome water bottle that is BPA free and has a freezer insert. I also got a ton of tupperware-esque containers so I can prep a lot of my food for the week on Sunday afternoon leaving no excuses for eating right when the week gets crazy.

Work went well last night. I even chose to take the stairs instead of the elevator when leaving the building that the trivia was in. I was at the student union of a local college, in their basement cafe. Meant walking up about 40 stairs carrying about 50 pounds of equipment.

It's my last weekend as a "civilian"... Monday morning I weigh in and activate my gym membership! Funny thing is, I have checked and since I started contemplating getting back in order I must have been subconsciously eating better because I am down a few pounds already it seems. I will report in on Monday!

Have a great day and a fantastic weekend all!
Mike

Great job on the stairs and the eating!! You are off to a fabulous start.
OK, I won't ride you to hard about the Guinness, that stuff is a meal in itself. LOL DH loves the stuff!!

Have fun tonight!! Stay safe and we'll touch base on Monday!!

The kids have the week off and my oldest is going to Quebec on a school trip so we have lots of activities planned. Bowling, skating and probably a few walks on the green if the weather holds. But I'll be around since my week is a lot less hectic!

Way to go, Mike!!! :cheer2: You are off to a GREAT start!:thumbsup2 Keep up the good work!:cheer2:

Have a great time with your friends tonight!:goodvibes

Hey Mike!!
Checking in to see how your day went.
Today we went to the RV show at the Big E complex. Had a blast but my legs are killing me. Ate pretty well even for "fair food". Poor guy doing food thought I was nuts that I wanted chicken plain with no bread and no cheese. LOL

Did you do stairs today??

Will touch base soon! I'm going to finish my barley salad and head to bed.

Hi all!!

Had a pretty good weekend. Friday was a wild and crazy night as expected but I had a lot of fun with friends I have not seen in years so that was great. Had a relatively uneventful Saturday, which is what I had planned. Slept in for the first time in weeks. Did some house chores and some writing. Went for a walk, just to the 7-11 to get a water for the walk home, probably not far for much but was a big one for me. Felt good after, even when my legs ached. lol

Sunday I did a huge purge of my kitchen cupboards and fridge. It's so funny. Up til now I had two shelves in a big cabinet, and a set of cabinets to myself above the stove, plus a cooking rack filled with boxed, bagged and canned junk food/sugary stuff. Literally jammed packed too. Like stuff fell every time I opened them. Now... I have filled half of our refrigerator with fresh stuff(hope my roomies don't mind! haha) and I am barely using one of the shelves. But I have everything I need now to stay on track and no temptations about! I donated some of the food to my roommates and the rest is getting dropped off at a food drive going on at my Grandparents's apartment complex. Hopefully someone will enjoy it!

The bigger news of the weekend was that I weighed in for the first time in about a month and a half so I could have an official starting point for my meal plan/exercise plan. It was at that weigh in a month and a half back that I realized I needed to get my life in order to make some changes, and it took some time for me to get my head on right about it all, but apparently the small changes I made since have helped as I am 12lbs down and officially out of the four hundreds! :-) What a great motivator! If I lost that 12lbs just by making a few better food choices, trying to walk more, etc. imagine what I can do when I really try! hehe :-)

Hope that you have a great start to your week all! No holiday here for me as I have to work both jobs today but that's ok.

Mike

Mike congrats on the weight loss!! That's great! You are so motivational! I work from home and getting movement in every day - ugh I really need to plan it. Because of you and Buffy and her pedometer I have made the effort to get out the last two days and walk so :worship:
