Mickey's watching! Christmas week dining with foodies, allergies, and kiddies.

Okay reading. GG sounds really good. I want to try Ohana breakfast just for Stitch if any of the minions are still fans next time we go. I still haven't tried Yak and Yeti, I like both Rainforest and T-Rex, so I'm not sure why we haven't tried them yet, I put it under way too many choices and not enough time!

:welcome:Ohana is great for Stitch fans. The food is good, it was outshines by Garden Grill this time, but we have always liked it. We haven't tried Rainforest or T-Rex, so I hear you on the way too many choices (not that I am complaining.) I couldn't believe that with a 10 day trip, by far our longest, I still couldn't fit in plenty of places I want to try, or that we love!

We ended up with a 15 day trip, though the last day doesn't really count since we had a 9am flight out, and I couldn't fit in a bunch of places I really wanted to try! We did a bunch of the character meals though, other then Ohana and GG and Minnie's Dine and 1900 Park Fare dinner (so many options!).

12/27 Dinner at 50s Prime Time Cafe

We did not have an ADR for dinner. Our original plan was to return from AK in the afternoon and swim, rest (which we did) and then have a WS somewhere o. He monorail loop, and either chill at the resort or maybe go into MK for a bit. However, we were energized after about 30 minutes in the room, and after a less than stellar night at MK the night before (pirates was down, throwing our touring plan for a loop. In fact, DH and kids were stuck for a long time.) we started wondering what else we could do. We decided at about 5:00 to see what MDE pulled up. I love to play with the app! Reservations for 5 can be limited, but we always saw about 6-10 options when checking last minute. That is a drop in the bucket of the options, but kind of a fun dining roulette. We spotted Prime Time at 6:20, and decided to go for it!

My kids had already requested we NOT go to Prime Time, due to the memory of being told they would have to do the dishes if they didn't set the table on a visit in 2014. So, we had not planned to go here, but DH and I both really enjoyed our meals there. We broached the subject as an opportunity to meet Vadar IF we ate there. That made he threat of washing dishes worthwhile. (My big kids had met Chewie on our first HS day, but ran out of time for DV.) the best part was, we still had time to swim! (Well, 10 minutes.) We got out of the pool at 5:20 and threw on clothes and headed to the bus stop. I was nervous we were cutting it to close with travel times, as the reports on bus travel in the evening to HS this week were horrendous. We didn't see a spot of traffic, though, so were at our ADR right on time. We were handed a buzzer and I was just making my way towards the outdoor stand selling Xmas beverages (glowing light bulb!) when the buzzer rang. Darn. I didn't ever try one.
We were seated at a table that had a booth along one side and chairs o. The other perfect for trapping the three year old between me and DH. The big kids grumbled about being forced to sit in chairs, but the kids menu had Star Wars crosswords and puzzles, so they moved on quickly.
I ordered a strawberry milkshake to share with the 2 dairy eating kids. This was better than Sci-fi's , with a fresh strawberry flavor and chunks of strawberry in it, but it had the same bizarre foamy, warm consistency. What is up, Disney? This out me off milkshakes in the World for life. Someone please tell me why milkshakes would be warm.
I ordered the seasonal fish, as my memory of the salmon on my last visit was stellar. This was a different preparation. The salmon was very good, a large portion, and it was served with perfectly cooked broccolini. It was served over sweet potato hash. The server just said potato hash. Why I ordered that, I don't know, as I had already confirmed my dislike of hash on this trip. There was bacon in it, and about a half jar of red pepper flakes. I love hot and spicy foods (including red pepper flakes), but this was major overkill. and it overpowered the milder salmon and vegetable flavors. I just skipped most of the hash on my plate. This was a "market price", which turned out to be $24.
DS ordered a chicken Caesar.it was very good, he ate it all, and it was large.
DH was impressed with the allergy menu here. He ordered the crab cakes as an appetizer. We haven't seen these gluten free anywhere else! This was pretty good. It only had one cake and had more topping (a sweet pepper jam like sauce and a chiffon are of a firm lettuce) than necessary. His entree was the meatless meatball dish. He was starting to not feel well. So wanted a mild entree, and spaghetti is his go to in this case. He said it was as good as meatless meatballs can be. I thought it was good. But as a former vegetarian, I kind of like fake meat!
ODD had the kids salmon with green beans. This was very good, she ate it all.
Our waitress was great, from Minnesota. She didn't do too many antics (which is why my kids actually loved this dining experience this time), but she felt like family.she actually sat with us throughout dessert and talked about her son. We weren't planning on dessert, but when she came up and asked, my DS ordered an enormous chocolate peanut butter cake ala mode on his own (he saw it at the next table.) it was too funny, we couldn't say no. So, the waitress and the rest of us sat and watched him try to eat it. He made a good effort, chocolate and peanut butter is his favorite, but it was the size of his head, and he left half on the plate.
We used our TIW (I do not have the total for this meal), and then the boys headed to launch Bay. I was taking YDD to the Frozen Sing a long, and ODD decided last minute to come with us instead, because I told her I would take her to Epcot for a Kakigori after the show. The show was fabulous, and then the trip to Epcot by boat was long (we did see the OL crowds I. Full force at this point... 9:00 pm and we had to wait for a 2nd boat), but the Kakigori was spot on! Is anyone keeping track of how many kakigoris this makes? I should tally them. We the. Walked out the front of Epcot to catch the monorail. My YDD was asleep on the boat into and grouch out Epcot, which made for a sweet night with my ODD. We definitely used up massive energy this day, though, which had a negative effect on the rest of the trip, to be discovered he next morning, but this was one of my favorite days and meals from the trip!

thanks again for your review...we have been once to prime time..and it was like 90 outside and we went in to COLD and had greasy fried chicken ..I did like the greens with the meal..and of course the vanilla milk shake..was so thick had a hard time sipping thru the straw....thanks again for your amazing day

12/28 Lunch Liberty Tree Tavern

Today was our one day we had chosen to rope drop MK, but my DH warned me the night before that he had a sore throat (the rest of us had been passing around a cold the whole trip) and would likely sleep in. I got all the kids up and dressed and grabbed something quick snack wise from Captain Cooks for the kids and we were at the boat launch watching the sunrise at 6:30. (Am!!!) we watched the first boat pull away, giving the kids time to eat their pop tarts. Or cereal. Getting a bit fuzzy on the details! We arrived at MK at the tail end of the Welcome Show and still had an amazing couple of hours before the crowds caught up. We breaked for a snack at the Lunching Pad around 9:00. No jalapeño pretzels here, just sweet cream cheese, but this was still delicious. We also got a chocolate milk for YDD and chocolate soy milk for ODD. Nice to find these everywhere.
The plan was for DH to meet us for our 7 Dwarves FP at 10:00. He was feeling really ill, though, and it was HOT at this point. He monorail was also down and the crowds were crazy. He had to wait for a full boat to leave and ended up not getting to the park until 11:00. I was a bit sad, as he had really only had 1 successful evening in MK and really wanted to do Peter Pan (he missed our 11:00 FP with us needing to go when he was at the gate), but he felt too sick to care. This cold hit him hard and he took over a month to get over it! He has Lyme's and ends up experience illnesses much stronger than the rest of us.
LTT had just opened up ADRs for this period a week before our trip, following a refurb. I had never been, and really had my eyes on the sticky toffee pudding. We had a Trails End ADR at 5:00, so I knew this was pushing the food envelope, but DH humored me.
We checked into LTT and were called fairly quickly. I loved the crayon station in the waiting area. The restaurant seemed pretty crowded and loud. The Xmas parade was starting as we sat down, which was near to get glimpses of.
We had a server who was not American. From Morocco, I think? This was actually true of most of the servers, which I found odd, what with the colonial theme and all. The service was also not good. We ordered our food and pretty much never saw him again, even when my YDD dumped a full ice water over the table into DH. We mopped up the puddle off the floor ourselves, as it was right in a high traffic area. 3 servers walked by before anyone even offered more napkins.
DH just ordered the strawberry salad, since he wasn't feeling well. This was tiny and there weren't any strawberries in it, just plain lettuce. He took one bite and said he needed to leave (we had been there about 45 minutes already.) he took YDD with him, as she was hitting her wall after 4 hours in MK.
I ordered he Liberty Tavern Boys BLT. This was horrific. The pork belly was mostly fat. I had to peel it off. The bread was a really sweet focaccia. It was like eating off a breakfast bread. He only saving grace was the arugula and tomatoes. The tomatoes were diced, which was odd on a BLT, but this was delicious, so I just ate that. Luckily, the fries were decent, too.
I can't recall what DS had. Something off the kids menu, as his came with dessert.
ODD had the kids pot roast. This was fabulous. It came with French fries and green beans and she devoured it. So nice to have a non hamburger meat option! There were also steamed baby carrots with this, which stayed on the plate.
We of course ordered dessert, as this was the whole reason for the reservation. ODD got sorbet. This came with fresh raspberries and blueberries swirled in. This was her favorite TS dessert of the trip. DS ordered ice cream and I got the obvious... Toffee pudding. This was amazing! Served warm, like a chocolate chip cookie half baked, with toffee crumbles and chocolate and caramel drizzles. It was not huge, but dense, and I quickly realized I could give half to DS to eat with his scoop of ice cream. This way, mine had the perfect ice cream ratio. So, if you are sharing... Try to get an extra scoop of ice cream!
This meal was a good value: 58.21 with tip, 11.28 TIW discount (2 kids meals, 1 adult plus appetizer and dessert.)
I am happy we got to try this, as the only way I will ever go back will be if it is just me and the kids. DH will not return!
I will review our dinner in the next post. It did not turn out to be Trails End, though. We were still full in the afternoon and DH was fully committed to staying in bed, so I cancelled TE around 3:00. The did not charge me the cancellation fee when I explained DH was sick. I was very sad to cancel this, as TE was my ODD's highlight of our trip last year. I didn't think I could handle the 3 kids at a buffet alone, though. What we rebooked ended up being our best meal of the trip, though. This certainly was a day of extremes!

12/28 Dinner (last minute) California Grill
After canceling our family dinner at TE, we chilled in the room for a bit and then DH perked up enough to offer to watch YDD at the resort so I could go out with two big kids. At this point in the trip, there was nothing the 3 year old wanted more than to watch mickey cartoons. She was pooped! They ended up getting a hot dog from Captain Cooks and watching Frozen on the beach (which DH had never seen!) So her night was a dream come true!
I started playing with the MDE app at 4:30 while at the pool. The crowds were in full force this day, and I could only come up with 5 choices for a table for 3 around 7:00 pm (enough time to swim and work up an appetite.) I was hoping for a Tokyo Dining spot, as my kids love it and we had not put it into our original plans (which led to frequent requests of sushi by my DS. He will eat it twice in one day if allowed.) After several refreshes, TD popped up at 7:15! I tried to book it, was asked to log in again, and it was gone. At this point, I was mad and returned to the room to get the 3 year old for some pool time and was ready to throw in the towel for a dinner plan. My DH asked me to hand him the phone and he would find something good. Refresh... California Grill at 7:25. Fireworks that night were at 8:00!!!! We had never been to CG, so DH was a bit perplexed when I snatched the phone out of his hand to book it FAST. My kids knew nothing about this restaurant, and balked at dressing up, until I said the magic word: sushi! It was time for a very special surprise Mama kid dinner.
I have read many negative reviews of CG, but going in with no expectations, we were fairly wowed. I am a native Californian, and appreciated the nod to the golden state in both design and menu choices.
We arrived about 10 minutes early to check in. There was a line about 10 deep when we got to the hostess stand. Most in front of us seemed to be walk-ins/ people asking about getting drinks. Those hostesses are impenetrable! Polite, but firm. By the time we were allowed to the elevator, I felt special! I got through! We also saw the Pirates and Pals folks go down the elevator while we waited. DS about died when he saw Hook on an escalator. Now that is on our list of must dos!
When we stepped upstairs, we were invited to sit in the lounge and order a drink until our table was ready. We just had time to sigh over the view and order drinks when we were led to the table. The drinks followed us, and although I had to close out separately, the bar staff came to me, excellent service from the start! I had a mixed up Mai Tai. This was a nice tropical drink (and I don't particularly care for Mai -Tais.) it avoided the cough syrupy flavor I associate with Mai-Tais... No grenadine in this one. . It was also priced the same as a pool bar drink. ODD had pineapple juice and DS orange juice.
We had time to look over the menu, order, and then step out for fireworks. The whole meal was perfectly timed. Wow! New favorite fireworks experience. A man proposed directly next to us mid Wishes. We headed back into the dining room to our food. My ODD ordered salmon, green beans, and rice. Yes, this is a common theme in her dining life, but she felt very special here, gazing down at the lights, wearing her navy sleeveless dress and her waist length golden hair in a braid. (She kept our table fitting in... Diners were quite dressed up, I was glad we had changed.)
DS and I decided to share a sushi roll and a flatbread. These were the items that interested us more than any others, but had the benefit of being more affordable than other options. We had the dragon roll. The presentation on this was the best I have seen in Disney restaurants. The roll was served alongside cold cellophane noodles, a cucumber salad, and garnished with micro greens and a pink sauce. The noodles had a mild flavor and nice texture. The cucumber salad was a simple rice vinegar salad, tasty. The roll itself had avocado, cucumber, tuna, shrimp tempura. It was a generous sized roll. It was $25, but I felt I was getting what I paid for! The flatbread ($16) was also fantastic. We tried the BLT flatbread. It was beautiful. Bright red, yellow, and green beefsteak tomato slices (DS picked his off), with bacon and crisp greens were drizzled with a balsamic vinaigrette. There was also a creamy sauce, might have been a lemon cream. Disney finally got a flatbread right! We ate very bite.
We ordered dessert as we hadn't overdone dinner. I had to give DS the sushi dessert! This was very cute. Squares topped with Swedish fish, rolled treats wrapped in fruit rolls. This would be fun to make at home. Although my ODD had been eating the crispy treats with no problems, the chef here wouldn't let her try it, as they are made off site, and he couldn't guarantee ingredients. She ordered sorbet and enjoyed it. I ordered the butterscotch creme brûlée and it was phenomenal. It was what I consider a French style... A very thin custard perfectly burnt on top. Heaven.
We did not order a lot and had a very reasonably priced bill... $86 including tip. (Our bar bill was $11-- we weren't charged for one of the kids drinks.) this was with TIW. The waitstaff was exceedingly polite. I never felt frowned upon by ordering relatively lightly for a meal. I watched service at other (some large) tables, and it seemed consistent all around.
This was by far the best, most memorable meal of our trip. The 2 kids agreed. Now, we will just have to figure out a way to get DH there one day, as he would love it, too. Truth be told, though, I know he will never forget his hot dog and Frozen dinner either!

I keep wanting to do California Grill. It just never moves up my list quite enough to make it to the top. Your meal sounded great.

Someday I want to find fried chicken that I love. Coming from the North, it has never been as good as I hope. Can't say I have been overly impressed with Disney fried chicken. Hoop de Doo this trip was such a weird texture.

The best part of the meal was that it was never on my list either! Made it a wonderful surprise. I am now a convert to unplanned dinners. Not that I will give up pre-planning completely, but two of my favorite nights this trip were the last minute ADR ones.

12/29 Lunch at Tutto Italia
We started the day with shared orders of Mickey Waffles (regular and allergy) from Captain Cooks. 2 adult orders and 1 child is perfect for our family of 5. I just wish resort quick services would all prepare their adult mickey waffles in the smaller size, like Roaring Forks does. So much easier for sharing than the one big waffle. The allergy waffles are the small ones in adult or child portions.

We have eaten at Via Napoli before, and not been impressed, so we were ready to try Tutto Italia this trip. Italy is such a beautiful Pavillion, but there isn't anything to draw us there except the restaurant.

This was another hot, crowded day. In fact, this was the only day of our trip that MK was experiencing closures. This impacted the Epcot crowd, as park visitors were being redirected to other parks. Riding the monorail to Epcot in the morning, there was bumper to bumper traffic visible he entire length of the monorail ride. Insane! When we left Epcot after lunch, we had to scan our bands to board the monorail. The AP and resort guest got us through. Offsite guests were not being allowed on the monorail without something beyond a ticket (ADR, etc.).

I mention all this, because TI was a calm oasis. I was terrified we would be seated outside, a repeat of Rose and Crown. But they weren't using the outdoor tables, phew! It was not packed and was just cool and delightful after a hot, crowded morning. The tables are well spaced, and the restaurant has a beautiful decor. Very calm, frazzled parents take note. We are the kind of diners who prefer to get away from the Disney sensory overload and this is a perfect place to do that. Our reservation was for 12:30. We had excellent service. The staff seems to tag team more here than most Disney restaurants, so anytime anyone went by we were checked on. The meal was quick, too.

The meal started with a bread service of focaccia and bread sticks. We had to ask for refills of the breadsticks twice. These were the crunchy kind served in a bag, and my ODD ate all 6 of them. Yikes! I can't recall what else she liked, but she loved this restaurant just for the breadsticks!

I ordered the fettuccini with pesto to shae with my DS along with a Caesar. There weren't many hot weather dishes... Very much a pasta place, but we had cooled down in the AC, so this was fine. The Caesar was excellent, not huge. The pasta was good, but not terribly strongly flavored. I prefer more garlic for a punch with my pesto.

DH ordered an allergy tomato sauce pasta. This was very good, simple, but more flavorful than the pesto. (I did not take notes here, so don't recall the names of our dishes.)

We will definitely return here!

Editing to add that dinner that night is a haze in my memory. I am pretty sure we grabbed some things from Captain Cooks before going into MK for a couple of hours. It was not memorable. Other than Dole Whips, we were not impressed by food offerings at the Poly this trip. I used to love their quick service food before the renovations, and although many of the menu items are the same, they do not taste as good lately. The only resort Tat I think has good lunch and dinner quick service is the Contemporary. Makes me realize the YC lack of quick service options isn't as much of a lack as I used to think... Yes you have to walk further for food, but you likely will eat better food!

will have to look back at the menu...when we went there a few years ago...hubby and I both had the beef option with a salad...the steak was so tender we could of used our spoon to cut into it...delicious...the bread service was really good and so were the different olives in oil....yes we would go back...thanks for your review

Catching up on your last couple of reviews.

First, so glad you enjoyed the tuna nachos. I still dream about those things and hope I can get them in on our next trip. Utter perfection.

Glad you liked the LTT toffee cake too. Too bad about your hubbys sandwich though. Mine had the same thing last time and absolutely loved it But who are we kidding we are only going for dessert ; )

What luck scoring a last minute ADR at Cali Grill and you got two of my favorite things: flatbread and sushi. I think I've had one or the other on our last couple of trips. Really can't go wrong. And I'm with ya on wishes from there. Perfect!!!!

I'm gonna have to try Tutto Italia one of these days. Just can't seem to tear myself away from the pizza at Via Napoli.

Chances are I read a review by you about the sushi and/or flatbread, inspiring me to greatness (in ordering!) Tutto Italia was never on my list of places to try. My DH requested it, and I tried to talk him out of it, as the weather was not what I would call pasta weather, but it surpassed my expectations. I think I need to give Via Napoli another try. We had horrendous service at dinner time. Maybe I should give lunch a try, which tends to be our preferred ADR time.

12/30 lunch Grand Floridian Cafe
Today was check out day, but we had the luxury of a 9:45 pm flight! A whole last day in Disney!we started the day with another round of shared waffles from Captain Cooks.... Allergy and regular. We did not discover the counter service restaurants had the allergy waffles until 2015, so missed out on them the first 3 years we visited. We will make up for those lost waffles on all our trips now!

We checked out and headed to MK a bit after rope drop, just planning to use up our many Rider Swaps (this actually didn't happen... Went home with 6 unused) and Fast Passes. It was hot and crowded again... The line for People mover was UNbelievable. I am glad I saw it, literally took up about a quarter of tomorrowland. We waited in it, of course. One of the benefits of the crowds his trip was always having access to the back entrance around Main Street. I had never used this before, and loved it as a quick, quiet in or out. (Much as I love Main Street when it is not like a sardine can.)

After our last park fun, we were ready for our traditional park break. We love the Grand Floridian Cafe. We discovered it very early in our Disney travels, and it has been the only consistent meal since. I like to schedule it for our last MK day, because when I haven't , my DH wants another meal later in trip. I like a bit more variety!

GFC is always a quiet, calm oasis. We had a 2:30 reservation today, so they were at he tail end of their lunch serve and we were immediately cool and comforted as we were seated. I ordered he raspberry mega smoothie. I have learned to also get one for my kids to split if I plan on enjoying mine. We have been seated all over the restaurant and always enjoy the setting, but today we lucked out and got one of the big circle tables in the rear. GFC rarely has many kids at lunch. His keeps the restaurant calm, and the kids there always seem to be more sedate than many places, mine included. And they were way across the big table, created a little adult oasis on our side.;) he waitstaff always gives the kids that little bit of extra attention that makes them feel special. Best waitstaff in a casual restaurant we have experienced consistently. Many of the servers are recognizable from trip to trip.

My DH ordered the allergy GFC burger. I used to always get this, too, until I had a bad lobster experience (hard/salty= has been frozen lobster.) his was fantastic today. I need to work up the nerve to order this again. I am not sure if the toppings are currently the same (menu change this fall), but it has always been a burger topped with butter poached lobster, arugula, and a sweet onion marmalade jam.)

I have played around he last few trips with a worthy alternative to the burger and typically come up (slightly) short. However, today I tried the grilled shrimp Caesar and wow! Stands up the the burger as a lunch entree. Although Caesars are a dime a dozen in Disney, this one was a gorgeous bowl of crisp, cut romaine, with flakes of parmesan and a well dressed, fresh Caesar (not goofy and over dressed.) and he large Gulf shrimp were still warm and slightly blackened from grill marks. Just a perfect balance! Of course, I had to give some to my DS whose eyes got huge when he saw my delicious salad. Good thing I out him way across the table with his kids pizza (ugh... He always orders this here and loves it, but I am not sharing that!) I would have left hungry if he was any closer.

YDD also ordered the pizza. We knew from previous experience it was quite small (and puffy dough) so ordered two. She only eats the cheese off he top, but it separated easily here, so she was happy. ODD got a burger and fries which she doused with vinegar. Another happy girl.

Although I really wanted to order the dessert sampler, which has some new mini desserts I had not tried, and with the chocolate Mickey never fails to put the kids over the moon with happiness, we had visited the sweet shop when we left the park, so opted to skip it in favor of treats by the pool.

This was a fabulous last meal. (We picked up dinner in the airport). If you have never tried GFC as an MK lunch break, do it! The staff is gracious and we always leave feeling restored.

We ended our trip at the Poly pool, which was crazy crowded this day before New Years Eve. The second day they were checking bands (I saw one family turned away... They were very clearly coming to pool hop and made a fuss, but the staff was gracious.) I did eat and enjoy my Mickey crispie in the sun watching my kids splash and play.

That wraps up my dining review. Of course, I am already plotting how/ when to return. We have APs that expire in July, but no plans yet. Thanks for reading. In the future, I will see what I can do to include pictures!

Sounds like a great last meal. Kudos to GFC for doing a Caesar salad so well. Will definitely think about having lunch here. We've done breakfast and dinner and enjoyed both.

Thanks for letting me eat along with the family.

I am happy you joined! Your reviews have definitely led me to some great choices. It is nice to know there are other folks like us who still enjoy a good meal even when accompanied by wee tyrants. (Bringing kids up on good food does have its price!)
