Mickey Magical Milestone - I thought 10 and up ONLY

I am confused?

If there are children on the tour who are younger than 10 years old, you might cancel? Are they really going to ruin your tour? I can understand not wanting a bunch of dissruptive two year olds, but a couple of kids who might be 8 doesn't seem like that big of a deal to me.

Believe me, school age children most certainly can (and do) exhibit the type of behavior that could disrupt a tour. I know this for two reasons: a) I work with school age kids every day, and when we take them on field trips during the summer, many (not all, but many), I'm sure, come pretty close to ruining the experience for other people at the field trip location because of their running, jumping, dodging in and out of people, and talking AT THE TOP OF THEIR LUNGS; and, b) because I saw, with my own eyes, quite a few school age children exhibiting said behavior (and worse) while DW and I were at the World this past August.

No, I'm not saying that, just because there's a six year old or an eight year old on the tour, the whole affair will be ruined, but there is a better than average chance that it might be.

Mickey's Magical Milestones is a new two-hour tour in the Magic Kingdom. Tour-goers age 10 and up visit attractions and special locations that retrace Mickey Mouse's fabled career. The tour, which costs $25 per person, is held every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 9 a.m., starting at the Guided Tour Garden adjacent to City Hall (just inside the Magic Kingdom Main Entrance). There is a 15 percent discount available for DVC Members and Annual Passholders. Arrive at least 15 minutes before tour start time (theme park admission is NOT included in tour price).

The tour was scheduled to leave the City Hall area at 9 a.m. and the tour group consisted of a family group of nine adults, one couple from New York and myself. We were all identified with a paper nametag that was shaped like Mickey's head. Our tour guide was Geoff and he was the same CM that led the Keys to the Kingdom tour that I participated in earlier this year. He has been with WDW for over 6 years and is very knowledgeable of Disney history.

The tour started outside the train station facing Mickey's face made from flowers in the front of the park. The tour basically went over how Walt began his career and how Mickey was created/developed. The next stop of the tour was the Exposition Hall and then we jumped on the train and went to Mickey's Toontown. Since this area doesn't open until 10 a.m. we were able to go over to Mickey's house, and after a few minutes we were surprised by Mickey himself. He shook everyone's hand and was available for photos with
the group and individuals. Geoff then had a one-sided conversation with Mickey and we were guided through the rest of the home, garden and garage. One side note, it was great fun to watch Mickey interact with the crowds from his home and see the excitement of the little ones. He played peek-a-boo with the curtains and when he chose the little girl to escort to the tent area I wasn't sure who was more excited the girl or her Mom.

Our next stop was supposed to be Minnie's house, but it was blocked off due to wet paint. Since it was so cool this morning I guess the paint was just not drying fast enough. Geoff then escorted us over to Alice's Mad Tea Cup ride and gave some examples of how Alice in Wonderland showed up in several different examples of Walt's work.

Now it was time to go to Sir Mickey's. Geoff went over some of the history of Minnie and Mickey and we stood by the appropriate figure in the shop. Did you ever notice that the Giant is peeking into the shop? If you look up at the ceiling directly behind the cashier area near Mickey on the beanstalk you will see his fingers prying the roof up and his eyes peeking in.

Next we went to PhilharMagic and I tried very hard to see the Hidden Mickeys Geoff informed us about, but I was only able to see one of the three. Now our tour was over and we were escorted to an area roped off behind the Christmas shop in Liberty Square. As Geoff was going over the final points Donald Duck appeared with a gift for each of us. I will keep the identity of the gift a secret for now.

Overall the tour is a great value and was very informative. The tour is still new and will most likely be going through some changes as time goes on. Geoff was a very good tour guide and is very informative. If you know everything there is to know about Walt Disney and Mickey Mouse you may not learn very much on this tour. I personally enjoyed it and thought it was a good value and a good deal for two and a half hours. Remember to let them know if you have an annual pass. The total cost with the AP discount was $21.25.

Just wanted to add, if you want the CORRECT information checkout the disney website. It says "This tour is recommended for Guests ages 10 and older" not required. just a guideline. It should be left up to the parents to decide if their kids are ready for it.

I agree that it's up to the parents to figure out what works for their kids. I have a 10 yr old who would probably be bored (but wouldn't act up so your tour wouldn't be ruined), but I have an 8 yr old who would completely enjoy the tour and would not harm anyone's tour. I would never book something like that for my 5 yr old, who would actually be interested, but couldn't handle being quiet, etc. We are thinking of doing the seed tour with one parent going with the 2 oldest and the other staying with the 5 yr old and toddler. I'd call and find out the ages of the kids and I would cancel (or change to a different day, if possible) if there are a bunch of way younger kids, but I wouldn't cancel with an 8 yr old going. You may be pleasantly surprised. My 8 yr old loves art and she is the one saying that she wants to go to the museum without the 10, 5 and 1 yr old kids because they wouldn't appreciate it.

There should be activities geared for differing age groups - isn't this how the Disney Cruise Line does it?

As a teacher-in-training (and subbing while taking classes) I've learned that there is a BIG developmental difference between the 5-10 age group and the 11-18 age group (yes, there is overlap, but....)

To me, this extends to things like attractions and shows. DW and I just saw March of the Penguins last Friday night (gift cert - we won't pay $9/ticket) and it was ruined by two 6-7YO girls who were there with teen sitters/sisters. One girl sobbed the whole way through (wanted to see something else that was sold out) and the other had no interest in the movie and thus chatted, wandered (several rows away from others) and fidgeted. And similar to QTPooh's tale, I've been on several WDW dark rides (PotC comes to mind) where Mom and Dad 'talked' their little one's fear away during the ENTIRE ride ("See the funny skeleton. He's not real").

I have no doubt that there are some children who are more well-behaved than there age would suggest; I also know that some parents will tell their children "If we go on this tour, you're going to have to be quiet and behave yourself". Sadly, parents and children such as these are in the minority....

IMHO - YMMV. Be well.

has anyone been on it that can explain it better? Is this one of those open air tours around the park? You aren't in the park when other guests aren't are you?

The tour is during park hours, so you will be around other guests. The tour is very good. I enjoyed it very much. But I think that a lot of the information would go over the heads of little kids. So I do think that it is better for kids 10 and up.

So can adults do it if they don't have kids? I will be solo, just trying to attempt new things. Are there adults along with no childre or will I be out of place?

No I did it by myself. A lot of the times I saw the tour going around it was mostly adults and teens. So go ahead and have fun.

I just called about this very issue last week. My youngest will turn 10 only 6 weeks after we are at Disney. I asked if we could go on the tours for 10 and up since she will be so close and I was told NO. I was told the only tours we could go on were Family Magic, Behind the Seeds and the Aqua Tour. I was told she has to be 10 when taking the tour.

From what I am hearing here, it sounds like this is wrong? Obviously there is no real difference between 9 years 10 1/2 months, and 10 years. I understand if the rule is you must be 10, period. I do not understand if I am told my 6-weeks-younger-than-10 can't go, but someone else can bring their 8 year old!

I agree with having different age appropriate things to do. I can see though, that it would be frustrating to have a child in each age group, and want to squeeze in the younger one. If my kids were older, I guess I wouldn't want little ones in a 10 and up tour either. Just like now, I wouldn't want any tweens on a tour for smaller children, maybe ruining things for them also.
