Anyone tried painting the Mickey Mouse ears on a shirt? Then tie dye the rest of the fabric.

I have seen instruction about basting and bunching up the mickey part, tie dye that part, then doing the rest of the shirts. However that looks pretty hard and a friend who tie dyes every day, says she has a hard time putting designs in. If she can't do it, then it will be hopeless for me.

So I was thinking painting the ears on, letting it dry, then tie dye the rest of the shirt might be easier. Anyone try it that way?

I would love to make a couple of sets for the whole family after Xmas for our family vacation in June. I have 10 year old twin boys who would love to help as they really like to wear tie dye shirts and it could be a fun family craft project.

Can anyone recommend, brand of tie dye kits and shirts to use for best results?

I made shirts for our family back in July with those directions. It wasn't too hard, you should try.

We got the tye dye kit from Wal Mart, and the shirts also from Wal Mart. 100% Cotton, for the girls the brand is "non-bounderies" (sp?) something like that, and for the guys we got Hanes.

A very important TIP: We soaked the shirts in the ash water overnight, and when washed for the first time we hand washed and hung to dry.

How did you get the Mickey head on there? I'm trying to figure it out, but I don't have any experience with tie-dying. I was assuming you did the three circles first, let it dry and then tie-dyed the rest of the shirt, but then I noticed there's a distinct white area around the whole Mickey head. :confused3 I'm not usually so craft challenged. I'm sure it will be really obvious after I figure out how it's done.

I'm not a crafty person, but I was able to successfully make the tie-dye mickey shirts using the instructions on this thread: http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=928135. The instructions with pictures start at post #7. Definitely pre-wash and dry your tee shirts with no fabric softener first. Then soak in soda ash water for four hours or more before you tie dye. Use a lot of dye - really soak the shirts - to get brighter colors with not a lot of white showing through. For softer colors with more white areas left un-dyed, use less dye.

I really didn't think the mickey shape would turn out, but it did. Just follow those instructions.

Forgot to add, for a nice white border right around the mickey head, use A LOT of rubber bands to band off the head and ear portion of the shirt. One lady said she used up to like, 16-20 rubber bands wrapped tightly around the fabric to get a thick white border. I think I used about 8 on mine and they have a nice 1/2" white border around the mickey head.

Thanks so much! I might get brave and give it a try. I'm going to read the whole thread as I have time and won't start this project till Jan. I want to use several shades of blue, as I will be making for 4 males and my husband isn't really a tie dye kind of guy. :hippie: Can't make it too bright for him!

I was thinking maybe a navy for the mouse ears, then a couple of contrasting blue colors. My friend recommended Darma so I think I will order the blue shades I need, rather then get a kit already set up with yellow, fushia, blue.

Anyone seen a nice mouse ears shirt with shades of blue? I need a pattern to at least try to sort of go by.

Now, just need to figure out transfers!:scared1:

I really want to make a set of family shirts for us to wear for at least 4 of our days. We went last minute on our last trip right before xmas. But this time, I have plenty of time to to lots of fun stuff for this trip.

Check post 41 of the thread I cited in my first reply. The dad in that picture has a blue and green shirt that looks great.

Thank you so much!

I didn't think of basting. I thought they were made just using rubber bands and was completely confused how you could band off an accurate Mickey shape. We're not going back for at least a year, but this looks like a fun project to do with my kids this summer.

I followed the instructions from the arts and crafts board, is not the same on the link above, this one has pictures step by step. I will try to find it for you.

For the Mickey ears, I printed the micke ears shape from the same thread, then you mark the shape on the shirt with a washable marker or pen, then you stitch it and pull it, then you put lots of rubber bands very tight.

OK I need help- I did a test run last night and here is what I got

What did I do wrong - I saw that when I did the ink it ran under the bands on the head how do I keep that from happening? HELP! PLEASE

We leave in 24 days I now I am worried!

I made them, it was easy. I made one for DH too, but he did not want to wear a pink Mickey Head shirt.

Cute! I love them. I will be making shades of blue mostly likely because I have boys so my husband should wear them, providing I don't mess them up when I make them.

Angboys3 - I highly recommend buying a tie dye kit that has boyish colors. I honestly did not think about it at all until DH complained that it had a pink Mickey Head. Oh well, live and learn. They were really easy, just follow the directions. Try not to put too much dye in the Mickey head near the elastic. You don't want it to spread into a smeared mess. I used several elastics to be safe. Good Luck!!!!!

Ok I started over and here are the results.

I was using thread not wax floss- must use wax floss.
Got the dye kit and not the dye spray.
Used the rubber bands that came with the kit- not the bankds from the rubber band ball.
OH YEA- important part- hubby wrapped the bands!
