Note: Michael swam the medley prelims before he raced Crocker in the 100 fly, so do not consider this decision to be indicative of the outcome of the later race. No spoilers
.
Here I'll tell you without blowing any surprises. Michael Phelps swam in the preliminary heats of the medley relay today. The medley relay is a big glamour race, it's really fun because you get to swim with the best guys on the three other strokes, plus it's the last race, so if he were in the pool for the final, he'd get all the glory of getting that eighth medal on national television. But there's this other kid in the same stroke as him, Butterfly - Ian Crocker, who is just a little bit slower than him, and has had a pretty terrible Olympics. Ian and Michael aren't close friends, they compete like hell, but, after Michael got out of the pool he told the American coach that he wants Ian to race tonight in the final so he can get a gold with all the glory. The Americans are pretty much going to win no matter who swims. And Michael will still get a medal because he swam in the prelims. But he's missing his chance to get that eighth medal on TV in front of everyone, so this other kid can get it. The press was blown away, they asked him why - he said "we came as a team, we're leaving as a team, and it's the right thing to do."
That was an incredibly classy move by a 19-year-old. His mother must be just stunningly proud of him in every way.
