It's so sad that Michael Jackson passed away yesterday, but it reminded me of Elvis Presley's death in a way.

They will both live on in their music for generations to come.

My question to you is ... which one was/will be a bigger icon after his death?

Michael Jackson or Elvis Presley?

Elvis is alive Mike!!! :lmao::lmao:

Come on Elive was "The King" he started Rock and Roll. No contest. Although Michael was the inventor of POP. Elvis was multigenerational MJ was not. IMO

How was MJ not multigenerational he was doing music since he was a kid. I am not really a fan myself. Just sayin'

I also think that Michael is more universally known throughout the world than Elvis.

I grew up on Michael Jackson. I saw the Jacksons back in 1973 in my hometown of Columbus Ohio. I was 5 when I saw them in Concert. MJ will be missed

Well that's what my mom and I were talking about. Elvis is more of her age and older generation. MJ was popular in both of our times. She was saying after her generation is gone the Elvis phenomenon probably won't be nearly as big as it is now. Either way I don't think anyone anywhere would not know who either one is.

Coming from the generation that grew up with Michael, hot on the heals of Elvis fame, I don't think either one will overshadow the other. Both are icons and legends. They were totally different, but yet there are many comparisons that are similar. For the older generation there will be no one like Elvis, for the middle/younger generation there will be no one like Michael. It is sad to loose anyone so suddenly and unexpectedly. We will always miss both Elvis and Michael. We are fortunate to have their music to live on.

And Elvis didn't start Rock and Roll. Chuck Berry started rock and roll, Elvis just followed in his footsteps.

I totally agree!!:thumbsup2 I voted MJ because I grew up listening to his music and he was my idol when I was in jr. high....but I agree with what you said!

While both certainly are in a league of their own, and both with their share of personal problems -ultimately I think MJ's past will hurt him long term and keep him from having Elvis' staying power. Besides, I highly doubt you'll be seeing many people walking around trying to look like Michael Jackson -no offense(to either party).

I voted for Michael.

Elvis was still making records when I started being interested in music- but I was never a fan after he "changed" from the younger Elvis in to the jumpsuit Elvis. :scared:

Michael Jackson was so cute on the early TV appearances- Mike Douglas, Any Williams, etc. I remember how very popular the Jackson 5 were.
Then, when music videos started (right around when I got married) THAT, to me, is what launched him into history!! I am still a fan of his early solo music.
But again, like with Elvis, I am not a fan of all the changes he went through.

It's not that I don't like change- I stuck with the Beatles through every incarnation. :hippie:

Elvis just became an old, fat drug addict.
Michael had some serious identity issues. He was a musical genius just the same.

I agree. I think Elvis died before too much damage could be done to his image. If he had lived is a big What If. He could have gone on to do amazing things, or he could have completely burned out. Michael had that extra time, and it didn't go so well. They both did amazing things, each for their generation. But I think for the over all "competition", Elvis wins.

I couldnt agree more, I grew up listening to MJ and I have Thriller on record and purchased the "best of" 2 disc box set a few years ago. MJ for our generation was an icon and defined pop music and music in general in his time. He was a star from a very young age and performed like no other, there will never be another MJ or Elvis for that matter.

May they both rest in peace and their music live on for generations to come.

Hi folks...

I think this is a non-productive, "no win" discussion.

It is also has the potential to disolve into a over-heated discussion that has nothing to do with the Dis Unplugged Podcast.

I'm going to leave this thread alone with the proviso that it remain friendly and non-offensive.

Thanks.

I apologize if I broke any DISboard rules. I didn't mean to. Honest. :flower3:

Personally, I take offense with a few comments in a previous post here. I've refrained from posting on any DIS MJ threads because my opinions may not necessarily be pleasurable to another person's and vice versa. I'd just like to say that both of these celebrities made major contributions to the music industry. I will not comment on their lives off the stage.
