Jackson family museum may include golf course, amusement park

December 31, 2009 4:46 PM | No Comments
Plans to honor late pop icon Michael Jackson and his family's Gary , Ind. roots have expanded to possibly include a golf course and an amusement park with characteristics of Jackson's Neverland Ranch and the former Riverview Park amusement park on the Northwest Side.

The latest addition to plans that already include a Jackson family museum, a performing arts center and a 300-room hotel are slated to be built on about 100 acres of city-owned vacant land along Interstate 94, said Odie Anderson, a south suburban Tinley Park resident who is president of the project.

The museum, performing arts center and hotel likely will be built on 10 acres of city-owned land in downtown Gary, Anderson said.

"Everything is in the planning stages at this point, but we're moving on a fast track and we're looking forward to actually breaking ground sometime in 2010," Anderson said.

The project likely will be built in phases, with the museum, arts center and hotel built first, followed by the golf course and theme park. Then developers might build a monorail system to connect the two areas, Anderson said. If the monorail system was built, he estimates the entire project would cost $1 billion over a 10-year construction period.

Private donors would foot a bulk of the bill, but Anderson said he's also looking to Gary for tax incentives. He would not say how much money has been raised since Gary Mayor Rudy Clay in October announced two new foundations created to raise money for the project.

Project officials still are considering whether to build a replica of the Jackson family home or have a bus tour of the Jackson family's former haunts.

The theme park will have roller coasters, trains and other rides familiar to anyone who sought thrills at Riverview or was a guest at Jackson's Neverland Ranch in California, Anderson said.

"We're trying to extract the best and come up with a combination that made Riverview so attractive for kids of all ages as well as [have] special themes of Neverland that would be reminiscent of the Jacksons," Anderson said.

Some Gary City Council members say they have yet to be briefed on the latest plans.

Person of the Year 2009

Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson kept his most stunning performance for the very end. Always able to command an audience, he knew how to bring whole arenas to fits of exultation with his moves and then silence them to the point of tears with his poetry. He was brilliant, excessive, maudlin, tacky and possibly criminal, but you could never ignore him. So it was fitting that in death, he momentarily silenced the largest arena humanity has ever known, the Internet.

News of this middle-aged man's sudden passing nearly broke the Web. Google's news section malfunctioned under the weight of "Michael Jackson" searches. The volume of Jackson-related tweets reached 5,000 per minute the day he died; Twitter was so overwhelmed that some users couldn't get into their accounts. Wikipedia buckled temporarily after hundreds of edits were made to Jackson's page. Across the Internet, more than 24,000 Jackson collectibles were offered for auction or sale. Jackson was crowned the King of Pop back before new media helped crack the monolith of radio pop into innumerable subgenres, from hip-hop and house to praise rock and adult contemporary. But the old-media monarch showed, one last time, that he still reigned: the world stopped for him for a few hours on June 25.

Michael Jackson owned 2009 but will 2010 be the same?

As 2009 winds to a close, New Year's Eve is always the time for reflection on the year that has past.

2009, of course, cannot be remembered without thinking about Michael Jackson.

Sadly, the world lost the King of Pop this year in what marked a tragic demise for arguably the world's greatest entertainer. But even in death, Michael Jackson illustrated the star power that most can only dream of in life. From topping the charts, selling out tribute concerts, and even climbing to the top of the box office heap, Michael Jackson owned 2009.

Today, Fox News conducted a public poll that places news of Michael Jackson's sudden death at the top of 2009's biggest entertainment stories.

For Michael Jackson, a life cut short, 2009 may have only marked the beginning of a new era for Michael Jackson's success and his musical legacy.

While the likes of Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga will go on to record new albums and new stars will be born for future generations, Michael Jackson could very well remain on the charts while remaining lodged in the hearts of millions of fans who will never forget the King of Pop and continue to share his music with younger fans for decades to come.

Yes, 2009 was the year of Michael Jackson. And 2010 may not prove much different.

The Associated Press offers evidence of such this week with the news that Michael Jackson's "Thriller" video will find a home among the nation's treasures in the world's largest archive of media recordings that have defined pop culture for generations.

The 1983 music video was selected among 25 films to be preserved in the 2009 National Film Registry of the Library of Congress.
