Umm, you don't have to "sneak" over the border to get your child born here. Folks walk over the border, legally, every day to shop and visit family. Are we going to stop letting pregnant women do that? You know, you can drive in, legally, up to 250 miles in the US. Lots of Mexicans shop in San Antonio. Tour busses routinely go to Houston from Mexico. Shall we check each woman at the border to see how far "along" in their pregnancy they may be?

Funny, I could have sworn our country loves to hold itself up as an example in Human Rights. I guess only when it is convenient, huh?

Look, let's not get into the language thing for the millionth time. The common language in this country, the language that we use, speak, do business in etc. is English. I don't give a flip if it's never been made the "official" language...it is the coommon language. If you go to any other country in the world, there are going to be people that speak other languages. I've been to Spain...there are people there that speak Spanish, Italian, Portugese, Franch. Does that mean everything has to be in all those languages??? No. The common language is Spanish, that's what they do business in, that's what the people who choose to live there learn to function in that society. If I moved to Spain, I would learn Spanish. I would not expect all the people, signage, official documents etc. to be in English for me.

If you come here from another country, learn English. I don't care what langauge you speak at home. I don't care if you know 12 other languages. One of the 12 better be English so you can function in the United States when necessary. I shouldn't have to learn Spanish, Italian, Swahili, Kurdish or any other language to talk to you. If you need or want something bad enough, learn to ask for it in English. You want to live in your little pockets of ethnicity, that's fine. But know the damn common language of the country.

As far as Mexico being ticked...why do we care? Our country, our land. If we want to build a 25000 mile long, 75 foot high wall, why do we care what Mexico thinks?

And yes, if I needed money that badly, I would work for $5/hour. And have.

Is he an American citizen? Do his parents pay taxes? When he refers to himself as a taxpayer, is he being inclusive of his family? You're grasping at straws here Chobie. We all know what he means. By attacking the poster, you are not supporting your opinion, which seems to be, that anyone who wants to enter the country should be free to come and go, drive without car insurance, not bother to carry health insurance and when they commit a crime, take up space in our jails, when they get sick, take up space in our hospitals and fill our schools with their offspring. Just think, if they put as much energy into their own economies as they do jumping across the Rio Grande, Mexico might turn into a self sufficient economy.

I guess i have a very very difficult time understanding why being poor is a legitimate excuse for breaking the law. We have jails full of people who broke the law in some way directly/indirectly related to their poverty--yet, they aren't let off for it.

If I were a pregnant tourist is Spain and happened to deliver, I wouldn't expect my child to be anything BUT an American citizen. He certainly wouldn't be regarded as a Spanish citizen by Spain due to an accident of his birth. All the pregnant women from other countries can "visit" as much as they want, they should just understand that if they "visited" while in labor in order to have an anchor child in this country, that they have committed fraud and they need to take their "new little family" right back home where they belong.

There are lots of border patrol check points within that 250 mile zone. It doesn't mean a Mexican national can't drive past them with authorization, they are checking for totally undocumented aliens. There is a checkpoint just North of Laredo, too. There are still a lot of Mexican Nationals that shop in San Antonio. The fact remains, you ca legally cross the border for all kinds of reasons, and travel freely within the zone. You don't need to "sneak" over to visit family or shop. Lots of folks walk over the borders in Texas everyday.

So what does that leave...the undocumented folks that cross "illegally", most likely to find work here in the US. And they are willing to do the low paying menial service and labor jobs Americans do not want to do, thus contributing to our society. As the poster from CA said, there are a lo of laborer jobs that Americans just won't fill for the same price, and they usually jobs that help keep our food and lodging affordable.

I could say the same to you in Connecticut. I do live in Texas, 150 miles from the border. Some cross to engage in illegal activity, especially drugs. But more often, it is Americans that cross over the border to bring back drugs. Don't blame the drug trade on Mexico, it is we Americans that purchase them, and in many cases we Americans that make the bulk of the $$$ from the illicit trade.

Actually it wasn't the Founding fathers - it was the 14th Amendment, ratfied after the Civil War because your intellectual forebears were seeking all forms of ways to deny equal protection of the laws based on differentiations of status. Thaddeus Stevens and his ilk sought to ensure that all "persons" had equal protection.

Please detail the resources that are being "mooched". Food stamps, medicaid, welfare, none of it is available without verifiable income, which would require you to be here legally.

What "resources" are they "utilizing" simply by being here?

Someone has to feed and house them, and without them being here legally someone other then the taxpayers is paying for it. Someone is supporting them, or they are surviving on what they earn here. If they are earning money via some sort of laborer job, they are not mooching.

Are you claiming they aren't mooching off the system but are in fact contributing their fair share to help the people who we know are mooching off the system?
