OMG, the OFFICIAL results of Ashtons leukemia chemo protocol are out and they are FABULOUS and I had to share.
You know how all cancer treatment protocols are experiments, since there is no cure. So the results of them take a while to come out. The study started way back in 1997 or '99 and ended in 2003. Then they had to wait to see how the kids that were on it faired. Up till 5 years out from dx. The powers that be at John Hopkins did further testing on the kids and did not give the info to the oncologists or patients-ha! It was something I asked our onc to do, but she said Children's didn't do it and it was too late anyway. They did it anyway for experimental purposes! Kind of aggravating something was done on my childs labs w/out me knowing-but I probably signed consent for it.
Anyway, the results are that she REALLY had a 91-95% chance of beating it. We were told 80-85%. Sounds good huh? But not when it is your kid. If they had these results to tell me back then, maybe we WOULD have felt a tad bit better. It still is not perfect and this is for a VERY specific TYPE of leukemia. Not all kids with ALL have this good of chances. For me, it is a God thing that she had the specific genetics. Out of 3,000 kids, only 12% fit this specific type leukemia. But of that 12%(360), the odds were in thier favor to a great extent. But it still means about 26 kids relapsed or died. Not too mention all the other more dangerous types of leukemia.
I am just happy that Ashton could contribute to the research-now kids with the same specific type ALL can hear those wonderful stats-not that I EVER relied on them

-so much can happen-or not happen when chemo is in your life. In your kid.
Well, like I needed to know this-I have proof in front of me! I just think it is a huge step-in 2000, there was a 80-85% chance for her specific type to be cured, now, only 8 years later, it is >90%!!!
Sorry for ramblin' I just think all this cancer research study crap is cool-hard to read, but cool!
Oh, and 14 more days of school for us!!!!!
