Metro New Orleans DISers - check in!!! - 03/2009

DNiece made her school's cheer squad as well! Rie's mom - I'm guessing she's no longer @ the same school as Rie if you've switched. Is Rie doing better in the new environment?

Jen - glad you have somebody who can come take care of the termite issue. Hope y'all don't see much in the way of structural problems. Are y'all required to have extra protection for Formosans in Livingston? Our contract almost doubled in price about 5 yrs ago when it was reported that a colony of Formosans had been found in Ascension. UGH!

Wow looks like everyone is making the squads this yr. Boy it seems so crazy that tryouts are already going on. Time is passing so fast.

I dont think we are required to have extra protection. I dont pay more attention to it, but did have the house inspected last yr and was going to put it under contract lol.. but just our luck never go around to it. Our flood insurance tripled so I just kinda forgot about the extra money on the termites.
Thank goodness the bugs we have are Dry termites.. not sure what is so good about it, but it isnt as bad as the formosans I guess.

Tryout are early! DD's squad leaves for cheer camp on May 29th-the last day of school.

Okay moms I am trying to decide what DD will do for the summer. Have you decided what camps your kids will attend?

We are looking at drama camp at church(although the play is Alice in Wonderland-a movie I simply cannot understand WHY Disney did) and possibly Camp Challenge, and VBS, of course! DD11's last year doing it:rolleyes:.

Anyway... thanks for prayers and as far as work, I kinda feel stuck. Not many other choices and places that will fit my "not wanting 8-5 M-F" thing. So I suck it up for my schedule. And plus, so many docs are complaining that i think our conditions will change.............eventually.

Lori

Total OT post here.....
After offering my 2cents on the Reeses PB egg thread, I just remembered something I saw in the store last week in the Easter candy aisle.

Elmer's has discovered Dark Chocolate! I saw Dark Choc. Gold Brick eggs & Heavenly Hash!!! I restrained myself that afternoon, but somehow those babies will be making their way into the kiddos baskets this year along with Reese-ter Rabbits! :rotfl:

My apologies to those of you who can't get to a store right away....

OHHHH MYYYY!!!

I just spoke to the bunny and put an order in for the dark chocolate goodness.

Hey Y'all,

Congrats to all the new cheerleaders!!! :goodvibes:cheer2:

Welcome to our newbies! :goodvibes

We went to the Martin's Once Upon A Vine wine event yesterday. It was a nice & fun. All the food (& wine) :rolleyes1 had me up most of the night with IBS stomach pain again, but it was still worth it! I was a little disappointed in the food. Martin's Catering dept. did all of it & they didn't really impress me. It gave me a new appreciation for F&W's PFTS. Which really is kind of sad, because I thought any chefs from Nola could hang with chefs from all over the world.

The weather was (& is) so pretty. It was nice because the event was a the Pavillion of the Two Sisters in City Park. Tables were outside & it was just beautiful. Driving in to the park, it looked like everyone in the city decided to head there yesterday!

Jenny, I hope your termite problem is minor!

Lori, Plenty of Prayers for your DH!

Requested prayers for us, we have a home care aide coming for the 1st time tonight. I can't even imagine how hard this is going to be for Bob, because I'm a nervous wreck about it.

Also more prayers for DD. She didn't get that job that she was called back for multiple interviews. Get this... The "girlfriend" who gave her the tip about the job, tells her that she had decided to leave her job & to interview for this one! and she got the job, because she had good contacts with UNO. DD was so hurt & mad! I felt so bad for her! DD is also having surgery on Friday, so things are just really rough for her right now.

Kristina, I hope you get this sorted out!

Kat, Prayers that the sale goes through!

I'll be praying that it goes well tonight. I'm so sorry that Angelina didn't get the job - some friend. I'll be keeping her in my thoughts and prayers this week.

De-No's does some mean boiled crawfish....

Thanks Ladies! :)

 to Angelina.

Dark Chocolate...man I love that and white chocolate. They are certainly tempting. :rolleyes1

Okay I started running on the treadmill today. I thought I was going to pass out but I kept it up. I have to loose some of this weight. :woohoo:

I'd feel stressed myself if I had to show up for testing in your department/closet.

Termite contract? What is that...some sort of termite insurance? :confused3

Yeah I was thinking the same thing...the results may be skewed in such a stressful environment! I know when I went to the doctor that last time, it was right after work and my blood pressure was really high. Not the same test but same end result. :sad2:

Prayers for your DH and DD. What a lousy thing for somebody to do to her.

Flood insurance TRIPLED? :sad2:

Yep - all part of the fun of homeownership in So. LA. Termite contracts mean you have to have your home inspected for termites 1x or 2x a year depending on where you live. You also have to have the slab area treated (pest control people handle this usually). Big issue because the Formosan termites can literally devour a house from the inside out in a matter of months.

Flood insurance - well, that should be self explanatory after all the news coverage. Believe it or not, it's only required in certain areas depending on your elevation & proximity to a waterway. Price is relative to flood zone area. Considering the amount of waterways in this state, it's almost compulsory.

Oh, and while you're figuring your budget...don't forget about car insurance. We're lucky enough to have one of the highest rates in the nation! Happy happy joy joy! ;)

Terry - sorry for the dark chocolate temptation! Keep up the hard work! I'm sore myself after starting a new program this weekend.

If only some other things (who shall remain NAMELESS due to new board rules :rolleyes1) were as efficient as Formosan termites....

I am having a heck of a time trying to figure out a budget. :confused3 I have a budget figured out up here, but I'm having a hard time trying to figure out one for down there. I don't know how much car payment, car insurance, taxes, utilities, etc are. :headache: Basically I want to know how much I can afford to pay in housing but I don't really know till I figure out the others.

The only insurance I have now is renter's insurance. It's cheap...like $250 or something a year (but was about half that in Denver!)

As for flood insurance...you seen all those people in ND that don't have it...yet this is the 3rd time in 12 years they've flooded like this. :confused3

So this morning....after I had hit that snooze button at 4 (for 10 minutes), I woke up one hour and twenty minutes later at 5:20. :headache: I had wanted to leave at 6:15 so I could be at work at 7. Well, I LEFT at 7...tried to get a cab. No dice. Caught the bus, then when I went to transfer to the train, I got stopped by the police. I had to have my stuff swabbed for bomb residue at the terrorism checkpoint. Then I RAN for that train because I was already running so late. I got to work at 7:40 and had a LOT to do, but got interrupted so many times that nothing got done. Somebody took a table out of my classroom, so stuff was all over the floor. It's still there. The building reeks of dead rat.

We have an assembly and during the assembly there's an announcement (at 8:50am) that the dismissal procedure will change effective today. This is the 3rd time they have changed the dismissal procedure this year, and they never tell the parents (or the teachers!) ahead of time. Whatever. There's also an announcement that we have a 2nd police officer stationed at the school. (We wonder what prompted this...it was a weapon last year that got us 2, which is one more than the standard-issue one officer.)

At 9:30, I leave the assembly because it's my prep; my class is left with Drama Queen, the art teacher. I run upstairs to finish the thing I meant to to at 7 ... the science fair project. :headache: But I'm going back and forth to the office because my attendance paperwork is missing. On one of my runs, I leave my keys in my classroom. But first, before I can find the custodian, I need to go wipe up the water I spilled in the stairs from hitting somebody with a door. (Oops.) I get BACK in the classroom, finally finish stapling in the pieces, then leave (WITH keys this time!) to the gym - 3 doors down from my room - to drop off the board.

Somehow, in this minute I took, Drama Queen has now arrived from the auditorium with my class. She has to use MY classroom, not hers, because she is also missing a table. (Turns out they are all in the gym...) Anyways, by the time I get back, she is SCREAMING down the hallway to TWO different people about "Where is Ms Piglet?!?!?" and "DO YOU HAVE KEYS TO THIS ROOM?!?!? I CAN'T GET INNNN!" Like OMG shut up.

I let her in, she RUNS AWAY. :rotfl: After a few minutes, she comes back and is panicking about do I have a piece of paper because she is allergic to markers. I give her the paper then realize the principal is making yet another announcement. This time, it's about the bathroom on the 4th floor, about how "It's nothing serious even if you smell smoke." :scared: A few minutes later, there's an announcement that "The bathroom has now re-opened after the fire." The WHAT?!? :scared1: In between all this, some lady keeps coming in to drop off the school pictures that came in, then she wants to know "how many kids DON'T have pictures." All I can think is Please. Just. Leave. Me. Alone. :headache:

By that point, it was only about 10:00. :scared: THANK GOD the day got better from that point on or I would sooo not be going in tomorrow!

Ooops...that got a bit long. Sorry! :scared:

So tonight I'm just going to plan my trip for next week. :rolleyes1

By that point, it was only about 10:00. :scared: THANK GOD the day got better from that point on or I would sooo not be going in tomorrow!

Wow, that sounds like one of my days! :rotfl2: Except my mornings are usually pretty calm and it gets worse as the day goes on. But definately the same :scared: feeling.

Budget wise, it really depends on where you want to live. I guess just like in any city, it varies greatly depending on the area. Metairie I think tends to be pricey. Orleans can be cheaper, but then you have to watch the neighborhood carefully. I was fine living uptown, but I was in the Tulane bubble. It's pretty cheap to live in St. Bernard right now. Others can get you up to speed on Westbank and Northshore.

Car insurance is INSANE. But, surprisingly, my flood insurance isn't so bad. Go figure :confused3 I won't argue. pirate: I'm actually in the process of looking to refi to see if I can get a lower monthly payment, not that my payment is bad now, but more money to go toward Disney is always good. :thumbsup2 The guy I talked to today said I have an EXCELLENT credit score. Yay me! :woohoo:

Dentist appointment for me tomorrow  And Jezzie's dental on Wednesday:scared: Can't wait til it's over.

the full moon must have been out.... I had a wierd day, too.

DH's interview didn't bring any exciting prospects, but a friend from his old job called and gave some promising info that he will "99.9% be told about/offered in the next 2 weeks". Soooo, I'll let you know more when things are THAT sure for us. But, it sounds good, that is all I will say.

He was surely at his wits end before that phone call and said some things that irked me.... thank God for that phone call. Even if it doesn't pan out, it made him happier. God bless him, though. You know how guys are about thier jobs... and he HAS handled it well(with few exceptions, but the exceptions have been, well, grrrrrrr.... I am having a Bailey's tonight while I sew up Haley's trim on her handmade quilt).

We have our Mega Fest on Friday, in which we are displaying New Zealand(like a social studies fair).
I was asked by my oldest to make a "slide show" to the Narnia soundtrack. Sooooo, I learned powerpoint! I made a lovely powerpoint presentation of New Zealand to the music.
pirate:And I may go to jail for copying New Zealand money, but only one side, for my kids to glue on a peice of construction papaer for the display.
So, please visit me in prison and maybe bring me a Mickey rice crispie treat.

Usually my days start out somewhat mellow and go downhill from there also, but today started out INSANE, mellowed a bit around lunch, then went a little crazy again at the end.

My head is spinning with all the new information and the things I need to do. Thanks for the info.

Good luck with all the teeth this week. :rotfl:

*Looks out window* Uhh....can't tell you about the moon because I can't see it from here. :confused3

Good luck on the job front....yours and his. And God can be funny like that, with the timing of things. ;) If I didn't know that last summer, I sure do now!

Good morning NOLA!

Lori - God bless your DH, he has handled this situation SO well. It has to be very hard for him, my prayers are with him.

I'll try and sneak some alcohol in with the Mickey treat.;)

Oh Piglet I hope you have a better day today. Yesterday sure was a winner! :sad2:

Sheryl that was just rotten what Angelina's friend did. :guilty: I'll keep her in my prayers throughout the week.

Hi all I was so excited to see a thread for New Orleans. I live right outside od Hammond. I knew there were fellow Disney lovers out there just hadn't found them until now. :cool1: I have a girls only trip that starts thursday April2. It's only for the weekend, but anytime at Disney is a good time. This is my thrid "mommy trip" I have been on with my BFF. I haven't read through the whole thread, but if there is a meet soon I would love to attend. Again I'm sooo glad there are more of us here in Louisiana.
Hi Robin, I'm Tricia. You'll find the nicest bunch of ladies here. Stick around and post with us.
Tryout are early! DD's squad leaves for cheer camp on May 29th-the last day of school.

Kendall doesn't go to camp until the middle of July. She had so much fun last year and is looking forward to this year. I think they went from a Friday to a Monday at SLU. Where is rie's camp?

I'm not a fan of dark chocolate but Kelsie is. I'll be on the lookout for these the next time I go to Walmart. Thanks for the heads up because I haven't seen this myself.
