Kathy - so sorry about Lauren's brother. It is a difficult situation. You'd give anything to get them back and yet nothing would be worth the torture to the sick person to hang on. I've been in a couple of situations like that with different relatives.
On a brighter note - the prom kids all look terrific. Really - they could be models.
As for the $5000 dinner - there were LOTS of drinks. No bar lines here and they seemed to be able to make anything. Lots of people passing around the really expensive little "bites" like shrimp.
We had some kind of "fou fou" salad and then our main course which was very, very good beef. I was getting full by this time and quit eating. Lots of wine on the table.
They dismissed us and I thought "What no dessert?" Well they had these dessert trays of wonderful stuff that was passed around. My favorite was the pieces of chocolate cake on a stick covered with toasted meringue.
I flew to DC from New Orleans and Bobby Jindal was on my plane - sitting in coach like everyone else. He spoke at the dinner that I went to. But I didn't get my dinner tickets from him or anyone else in LA.
I'll tell a story on myself. I went to an inauguration ball in this building a few years ago. I only had 2 drinks and could barely walk (and believe me I am used to drinking in nola.). I think each drink was about 8 ounces of gin.

I did manage to get back to my hotel - but don't remember much of that night. I would barely touch any alcohol this go round. That building and their bartenders scare me.
My sister is leaving for Hawaii this Sunday on a 5:45 am flight. She will end up spending the day in LA waiting for her next flight but our nephew can probably come have brunch with her. Dad and I will drive about an hour and a half to my aunt's home. I love those cousins and their children and now a few greats.
I went to the dentist very early this morning. I stopped at the grocery store out his direction (new and big). It was like there had been an explosion of little old ladies. I thought this cannot be coincidence, and sure enough when I got outside there were 2 buses from senior homes in the parking lot.
I think it's funny to note the demographics of a grocery store. Today was definitely really old people's day. The grocery shop that I normally use in my neighborhood is predominantly middle and upper middle income blacks mostly in their 30s and 40s I'd guess.
Some of those old people were a bit scary - I thought we might have a mini-riot at the electric scooters.
