Messenger launch on 2 August

I would LOVE to see this!! But don't really want to spend all day at KSC doing the tour etc etc. Can you just drive to a spot in the area to watch without actually going in to KSC?

Has anyone seen one of these launches?

Don't go putting too much faith in a launch date. I've been in Florida several times when launches were planned and only once did one go on the specified date. Most are delayed either by technical glitches or weather problems and then they have to wait for a similar 'window' to try again. As regards where to watch from, well, near enough anywhere really. The one I saw, the shuttle Endeavour, was launched while we were visiting friends in West Palm Beach, almost 170 miles away and we saw the whole thing with the exception of the first few seconds. Unfortunately it was all picture and no sound and we missed out on probably the most memorable part of any launch which is the noise of the thing!! I've since been told that as long as it's a clear day you should prety much see and hear everything if your within 30 miles of KSC. Hope it goes according to plan for you!!

Thanks for your reply Nighttrain. From what you've said I don't think I'll bother booking tickets just yet in case of cancellation but just play it by ear when I get there.
