I hope this is a simple question.... I'm thinking about purchasing memory maker for our upcoming trip and am wondering about photographers availability and locations. Are photographers located in places like California Grill and Disney Springs, or just the main theme parks?

the main theme parks and waterparks. I have seen outside of Chef Mickeys and 1900 Park Fare and Akershus and a few other restaurants but I highly doubt Cali Grill is one of them (although I have never eaten there)

We just bought the memory maker so I did some research and found a good summary. If you scroll all the way to the bottom of the page there's a map- https://disneyworld.disney.go.com/guest-services/photo-pass-service/

They're at the following restaurants:
  • 1900 Park Fare
  • 'Ohana (breakfast)
  • Spirit of Aloha Dinner Show
  • Chef Mickey's
  • Cinderella's Royal Table
  • Tusker House (breakfast)
  • Hoop Dee Doo Musical Revue
  • Akershus
They also have them:
  • Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique takes LOTS of pics and Pirate's League will have a photographer available as well
  • Most scheduled character meet-and-greets have photographers
  • Enchanted Tales with Belle has photos taken of the people who participate in the show
  • Most parties (including the Halloween and Christmas parties) offer PhotoPass pics. There's also a 1 day Memory Maker option for the Halloween party available.
  • Deluxe Resorts during the holidays have photographers at times to take pics
I took this from this site: http://wdwprepschool.com/how-memory-maker-works/

There are photographers all over the place in the main parks and waterparks. They are easily identifiable, so you shouldn't have a problem. From what I gather, the best way to see if you like MM is to just get it once and see if it's worth it to you afterwards. If so, keep doing it. If not, now you know!

When you take photos at some of the main spots (Main St. with castle, Epcot ball and bridge to WS, Tree of Life in AK, etc.) make sure to ask if they do magic shots. There are shots they can take where you hold out your hands or look a certain direction, and when you see the photo on the site at home Tink will be in your hands, Simba will be in your arms, Stitch will be coming out of the ground, or you will be holding balloons, etc. Many of them can do it, and some will direct you to another person(such as further up on Main St.) but they are some neat shots you can get so just ask. Also remember to take pics at night as well, like with the castle lit up. It also now includes ride photos and videos from many of the major rides. If you are not aware, when you get home you can edit the photos, make them black and white, add borders that have to do with the season, etc. You can make copies, so you have the original and the edited one, and can have as many as you want to get your money's worth before you download.

Do they only do the magic shots if you have MM, or do they take it for anyone? I would like the Tink one, but I don't wanna pay for MM. I'd rather just download that one for $15.

No, they take them for anyone.

They take them for anyone, in hopes you'll buy them individually, even if you don't have MM! Sometimes a photographer will automatically take magic shots, but it can't hurt to ask them to take one. My understanding is that any photographer without a tripod can do magic shots, but the specific ones they do depend on where they are and on which shots they are trained on.

Yes, as PP answered anyone can get them taken, and you can buy them individually. I try to let people who are buying MM to ask, so they can take advantage of as many features and shots as possible to get the most for their money. If you want Tink there are a few spots, but the main one is on Main St.(no pun intended!) with the castle in the background. There are many photographer spaced out all the way down the street, so if one can't do it, they will usually direct you to another one a few feet away. As mentioned, they cannot do them on a tripod or once it is dusk/begins to get dark, so be sure to stop early in the day. We like to get one first thing when it is not as crowded.

Just FYI it is no longer true that photographers with a tripod cannot do magic shots. They can (perhaps not all of them but many can - it's definitely worth asking).

Also the restaurants listed above have a photo Op, but they do NOT have photo pass photographers roaming with the characters.

We found a photographer at Disney Springs last week near ghirardelli's. We also asked photographers with tripods about magic shots and everyone we asked said they couldn't :-(. But we still got some good ones from those without tripods

The phone app has Photopass photographer locations on it too. We just got back from Disneyland and used that part of the app a ton because we were on a Photopass mission :-)
