Hi all! I'm going to be purchasing the Nikon D5000 this week. I'm looking for a memory card that will hold a few hundred pics and some video.

I have no idea where to start. Any help is appreciated. thanks

I have the nikon d5000 and I have a 4gb sdhc card right now it has around 400 pics on it and it says I have around 600 more pics I can take but I also have a few extra sd cards(bjs has a 3 pack of 2 gb cards for $25 or one 4 gb card for $15) hth

Keep in mind that if you shoot RAW, the number of images you will fit on each card will be cut to a fraction of the JPG number.

I believe that I can tell a speed difference between my class 4 and class 6 cards. I would not use a class 2 one at all.

Class 2's are always on sale. Last week I found a bunch of Class 6 cards for sale for $20 taxes in each.

There are some 4gb class 10's for sale this week, $34 taxes in...

There is a point of diminishing returns. I do not know that a consumer level camera can take advantage of the increase between 6 and 10.

I'm sorry for hijacking your thread Cheshire, but its a subject that doesnt get enough attention! :)

UK, you wouldn't go for anything higher than a Class 6?

I personally would not unless the price difference is really small. The San Disk Extreme III are only a 6 and are very well respected for their speed and quality. I personally like Kingston the most.

I want to add that sometimes it is wise to have more than 1 card. It's kid of a safe factor for me. On a trip, you dont; want to lose your pics, and I try to change my card every day or every otherday, that way if something happens you still have at least some photos. I know a lady who went to Disney twice nwo and has lost pictures both trips. I think it was her camera doing it, and some pics were recovered when she took the card in to a photo dealer, but not all.

Costco is a great place to buy cards

8gb Ultra II are 39.00 right now

Just letting you know on the costco thing. you do have to be a member to go or go with a friend that is a member. After that the one that is the member has to pay.
