Meghan Markle…

@Karin1984 Martha was the original how to entertain/being the perfect host. In addition to her tv shows she wrote several books with entertaining in the title. I used to have 3 of them before my book purge. I’m a big Martha fan I don’t need a copycat

Speaking of Martha, if you are a fan and haven’t seen her new documentary it’s worth a watch.

The show is out and the first non-British tabloid review is in. As far as I can tell the Irish Times doesn't really report about Harry & Meghan. The Irish Times doesn't seem to have an agressive anti-H&M group of readers (based on their social media).

So, let's call it an unbiased review? ;-)

The summary: It's beige and bland.

With Love, Meghan: So beige and bland, it doesn’t even qualify as a hate-watch
Television: Boring lifestyle tips from individual who always has servants within reach include serving coffee to guests

Now, in what is widely regarded as a final throw of the right royal dice, Meghan is going full influencer with her lifestyle show With Love, Meghan (Netflix, from Tuesday). It’s Martha Stewart by way of Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop, with a sprinkling of the “tradwife” Instagram – only the worst possible version of all three, with Markle a black hole of beige throughout.

The big conceit is that we, the impoverished viewers, can hang with Meghan for a few precious hours. And yet, the velvet rope is always in sight. Filming takes place not in Meghan’s actual house but in some sort of guest mansion adjoining her property, and if there are passing references to her husband and children, we never see them on screen. With Love, Meghan is trying to sell us on Meghan’s lifestyle without actually showing us any of it.

Instead, a parade of friends make the pilgrimage to Meghan’s cradle of craft. First up is make-up artist Daniel Martin, who is menaced by a platter of vegetables carved and arranged by Meghan and by which he is required to be impressed. Next, comedian Mindy Kaling troops in and helps Meghan to make a “balloon arch” for a hypothetical children’s party (no children actually appear, nor is there a party).

Meghan is enthusiastic yet struggles to distinguish between living the best influencer life and acting like a normal human being. For instance, when gushing about her idealised kids’ birthday party, she astonishes Kaling by revealing that she is “always thinking about the parent experience ... I will always have a coffee station for the parents”. In other words, she serves coffee to her guests – a lifestyle tip potentially more extraneous than she realises.

As eye candy With Love, Meghan underwhelms too. Her crudités are crude, her home-made candles look like something from the homeware aisle in Dealz, and the “banter” between host and guests has all the spark of a dead battery on a frosty morning. Lustreless and bland, it doesn’t even rise to the status of a hate-watch. With Love, Meghan may well grab enough eyeballs to justify all that cash Netflix has stumped up – but this is nonetheless a moribund addition to the lifestyle TV genre.

I'm not into "lifestyle" shows; closest I come is a subscription to Southern Living so I can clip the recipes occasionally.

Funniest result of this particular show so far is her pasta-making technique. Italian chefs are appalled and saying that she is using much too little water, but what she's really doing is using the pasta water as the thickening agent for a sauce; it's a very American shortcut that is even used in restaurant kitchens here, though usually not in a one-pan-meal kind of way, with no herbs added at all; like this thin melted-Feta-cheese sauce with tomatoes. (It's more common to cook the pasta the traditional way and save a cup of the water so that it can be added back in as a thickener if need be.)

It's also kind of funny that her own house, which contains children, is apparently not suitable for use as the set of this program; she has rented a nearby home that belongs to a seventy-something couple who don't live in it full-time.

Haven't watched it.

I do this. The water boils faster, and yes, I add some of the leftover water to thicken my sauces.

She might be doing that for privacy. So she, Harry & the kids have some sort of private life. She's already being skewered for what she's doing. No need to let people have a shot at their private home & yard too. Also, any would-be stalkers will go to the wrong home, (if they don't know where the Sussexes really live.

I don't mind she didn't film it in her own home. I get why you wouldn't want that. However, it doesn't help with making it a personal show.

One of the most heard comments from both positve and negative reviews is that it is too polished. Trying too hard to be perfect.

The kitchen looks amazing, but it doesn't feel like a kitchen where a mum cooks pasta for her children. It would have been nice to see more of the real Meghan and not the persona she has created to control the narrative.

I think the summary of the reviews is it scores around a 5 out of 10. Many call it bland, beige or boring. And that is maybe worse than being called bad.

I have also read several times that the show is good background filler. Something you have on in the background while you are doing the dishes. A bit of a backhanded compliment, I guess.

I disagree with the haters here. What would you be if your father cut off your security from the paparazzi you had been chased by all your life simply because you were his kid? Or if your father had never made an attempt to see his grandchildren. Or if you flew halfway around the world to see your sick father and he only had 40 minutes for you. Please, he wasn’t a Dad that took his kids to Disney. I think Harry and Meghan are wonderful people despite what they endured.

The haters are amusing. We all understand why they harbor animosity towards her. She was expected to remain in her place, express gratitude, and avoid causing any disturbances. How dare she challenge the monarchy by revealing her mistreatment, particularly by Princess Kate, and the royal family’s concerns of the potential darkness of her children with Prince Harry. She should have kept these issues to herself and continued to endure them.

This mirrors the common theme given to individuals who face racism, homophobia, and sexism: “Stay silent; we don’t want to hear about it.”

I wish her well!

Yes, the only thing is, people/outlets in the US are also turning on her. Variety and Time Magazine gave Meghan a platform a few years ago, but are very negative about her new show. That is not the influence of the British media or public.

It’s because many Americans have an insane fascination with the British royal family, often overlooking the fact that one of their own, an American, faced mistreatment by the very institution their ancestors sought independence from in the 1700s.

But it is not possible for US people/outlets to not like Meghan's show because it is boring? Including those who were team Sussex after the royal fall out?

It has to be that they do not like her because of how she treated the monarchy?

Is that why they can't keep staff to save their lives? Because Catherine was mean to her?

The bottom line here is she was wholly unsuited to the role in which she found herself. Which is not a dig against her, I would not be able to live like that either. Some of the things she talked about in the Oprah interview were fair, a lot of them were either heavily nuanced or just flat out false.

This story for sure has two sides to it and she is certainly not without some fault in the situation.

Yes, that’s a possibility and a fair statement. However, my comment is directed toward those who say, “I can’t stand her because of her behavior toward the monarchy or the interview she did with Oprah.”

Many people can't stand her because of the interview she did with Oprah because a lot of the things she said were just flat out un true! I mean if you get the Archbishop of Canterbury making public statements to fact check you that's not great.

Were you there? How do you know that information? Look at what Princess Diana endured. I’m sure if Princess Kate said it, you would believe her.
