I recently attended a seminar for medical transcription training through At-Home Professions. Has anyone gone through their program? I would love to hear any positive or negative feedback.

I am actually two classes away from my certificate in Medical Transcription. My last two classes were the transcribing class, I hated it can't understand the doctors. So I am changing my degree a bit when I go back to school when my youngest gets in school. I actually attended a vocational college in my area.

My sister and cousin are both medical transcriptionists, and my cousin learned it by working at the hospital. My sister went to a community college and took a one year course on it. I took some classes as well and it is not as easy as it may seem. A lot of dr's have accents, and you need to be a very good speller.

My suggestion for you or for any career, is to talk to the place where you would like to get a job (hospital, dr's office...) and ask them what they would require from you. Some places require you to have a special accredidation. I know that my sister has told me of countless people that have applied at the hospital who took courses at home that really are not prepared for the "real world" experience.

Good luck. My sister loves it. She works graves at the hospital and supports her husband going to school and has 6 children at home right now. It is just temporary for her, but she enjoys it.

On the workplacelikehome.com boards---I have read about those who are medical transcriptionists. It is a tough field to enter with some tough entry requirements. Most of those that are at-home require real world experience first despite any education they received.

If you are looking to attend a true and honest online transcription school that will help you to obtain work at home employement, then the school that I recommend the highest is the one that I completed. It is Career Step. They have a program that helps you get a job as well, plus many of the work at home companies will hire you with no experience if you have completed Career Step's course and most won't do that otherwise. There are a few other schools that they will also accept, I'd be happy to talk with you futher on this if you want more information, feel free to PM me!

Please don't go through At-Home Professions for medical transcription. You will most likely find that you lack enough skills to be able to do this job. I have thought about attending one of their seminars just to see what they have to say, but I know when I was researaching schools for MT I heard the same thing over and over from At-Home Professions graduates they couldn't find a job or even get companies to agree to test them. There are three on-line schools that are recognized by the AAMT (American Association of Medical Transcriptionists). . . Career Step, M-Tec, and Andrews. If you are going to invest the time and money in a course please choose one of the above so that you can get your money's worth and get an education that employers will take seriously and consider testing you for employment. If you have any questions I can help you with please feel free to PM. Good luck.

I second Tinkin and Kellyscrapbooks!

Go through a course that is recognized through AAMT. I did a course through college and was hired with no experience by MedQuist before finishing my course; however, I have been working for a local hospital for the last 3 years and that is where I really have learned this profession. It is a hard profession to get into, but if you are persistent you will get there.

It is the only profession I have found that will allow me to be home with my kids and put in a full 8 hour day. Also, once you are skilled enough you basically make the size of your paycheck unless you end up working in-house and being paid by the hour. I love doing it. You do have to be able to spell good and most places require you to be able to type 60 or more WPM. Good luck and keep us posted.

I have always thought about doing this so that I could be home with my son. What kind of pay is it? Do you get paid by the line? If so what is the average amount per line and/or average per year for an 8 hour day?

If you need financial aid, Careerstep also goes through Everett Community College. Its on careersteps website. I am doing that for medical coding then I willl do it for medical transcription!
