Medical question: Anyone ever take primadophilus?

One of my dd's has battled constipation for a couple of years now (really it began when she was three and started "withholding"--what a nightmare). We've tried everything, prune juice, raisins, whole wheat bread, etc. It was not enough to get her to go. Her pediatrician put her on miralax which does definitely get her to go. Basically it retains the water in the stool (I think) and it just slides right out of her (sorry!:( ). But I don't want her on this indefinitely. I went to the health food store today and they recommended something called primadophilus. They said it puts the good bacteria back into the intestines and is tasteless so I can put it in her juice. Okay, so now the question; has anyone out there had any experience with this? How well did it work?
Just thought I would put this out there as so many people read this board, hopefully someone can give me some info! thanks!!!

I have no advice for you about this topic. Sorry.

I thought I would bump this back to page one, though, in hopes one of our DIS nurses or physician's will see it and have an answer for you.

It is wonderful for the intestines...I absolutely recommend it.

I also recommend getting some wheat germ or other bulk fiber and put it in everything...cookies, muffins, pancakes, breads, you can roll chicken pieces in it and bake, sprinkle over cereal and just about anything. Get as much of it in her on a daily basis as you can.

Good luck.

My neice is on Miralax and DS has encopresis. We don't
have him on any meds as he is willing to eat lots of
fibre and drink lots of water. Ds was drinking two
tablespoons of mineral oil at night to improve his motility.
It started leaking out and ruining all his pants so we
stopped and diligently stop at the bathroom after meals.
The fiber requirement our pediatric gastro specialist
gave us was age plus 5 per day. She said we should try
to make it water soluable/fruit fibre as much as possible
as the other creates bulk. Poor DS is not allowed ANY of
the cool kids cereals and HAS to eat his healthy food B4
any snak type foods. Every time I make an exception, it's
a slippery slope to get off of. He's 7 and his preschool
teachers did not let him go when he needed to-I found
out when symptoms began presenting with the encopresis.
As for Prima or Acidopholous-we used it for years when
DS was younger each time he needed an antibiotic which
kills the intesinal bacteria or if he got stomach viruses.
I didn't use it prophylactically. I use it myself for the
same purpose. It re-establishes one's system very
nicely. I also carry it and take it on trips to less advanced
countries where I always seem to get intestinal distress.
