Hi everyone,

We will be staying at OKW for the first time this April/May. My mom is unable to climb stairs, so a medical mobility ground floor request was noted on our reservation.

Has anyone added this request to their reservation and been assigned a second or third floor room? Should we arrive to find we were assigned a third floor room, I am not sure what we would do.

Thanks,
Jim

First come first served if there are several requesting first floor and medical requests would take priority. OKW is pretty large so I wouldn't expect any issues.

You can also request ground floor when you do online check in.

"I have done this 2X @ OKW for my Dad (hip surgery). I think once we got there and we might have been in a 2nd floor unit. The front desk immediately switched us. They will honor a medical request. The only issue you might have is if you were checking in really late at night and most units were occupied, if they happened to overlooked the request. You can also request a handicap unit, which is near Hosp House and has an elevator, grip bars in bathrooms, etc.

It's been several years since we've done this, so things have possibly changed, but when we did it there were two methods of handling accessibility issues. One was to do what we did -- simply request a ground floor unit for medical reasons.

The other was to go through the WDW office that handles disability issues. I believe they are the only ones who actually have the ability to guarantee any particular accessibility requirement. They do a 3-way call between you, their office, and DVC and get what you need. We never used that office because Grandma's disability wasn't that bad, but that may be an option for you if your Mom can't climb stairs without discomfort or risk of injury.

Obviously, the sooner you make these arrangements the better. We got our request, but we also booked much farther in advance than you are doing.

Thank you for the suggestion. After reading your post, I did contact Disability Services because my mom could not ascend or descend the stairs without risk of injury because of arthritis and her bone density.

I felt at ease after the call.

Good conclusion! Don't rely on online checkin if you have a medical need because you cannot add a comment. Call DVC and have it noted on your reservation and/or call Disability Services as noted above.

When you say "first come first served" do you mean first to make the request? If so, how early can you make the requests? As soon as you make the reservation?

Or do you mean first to arrive at the resort?

Our personal experience with requesting an Ada complaint room at okw has been great
But then again both times were for the grand villa and there is only 1 Ada complaint grand villa
2 out of 3 times we got the villa the third time about 2 months after we booked the villa we were called by member services and told there was an issue with the avaliablity of the Ada grand villa mind you ww were traveling with wheelchair bound people
The time we had the issue they gave us an Ada complaint 2 bedroom and a 1 bedroom on the first floor at ssr

While medical requests are generally honored, the only way to have any type of guarantee (even that's not 100%) is to reserve a HC room. IMO if one knows and takes their chances on the request for location but not a HC room knowingly and gets burned, it's on them if they don't get the request.

I was. I had two children with me, one small and have bad wrists and at the time an inner ear problem with balance (fixed now, I hope forever). We were give a third floor room. We had reserved hospitality house area room at 11 months. I told them my medical issue and that I reserved at 11 months and it took about 20 minutes but they found us a room close enough to the hospitaly house that it didn't matter much. At first they were not going to help keep us in that area and just send us to an elevator building, but I told them I thought that was unreasonable since I booked at my home resort 11 months out.... so they did their thing and did find a room that fit very close to what I was asking in the end. just took a bilt of begging on my part.
