Hi! Just wondering....how is the medical facility on board? Just want a piece of mind:)

Hi! I am a Cast Member and yes the medical facilities are wonderful. They have experienced doctors and nurses onboard and on call 24/7. There is nothing to worry about :)

If you need to use the medical facilities, you need to pay out of pocket for treatment before you leave the ship and get reimbursed by your insurance company. Cost of medical treatment will be added to your stateroom account.

... assuming that your insurance covers it. For US-based insurance, Medicare definitely does not cover treatment outside the US. Most private insurance does, but terms vary by policy.

Even if you have to pay cash, one pleasant experience is how little the prescription medication they may give you is. The ship's medical facilities are stocked and licensed from The Bahamas, so you pay Bahamas prices for medicine. A traveler in my group got a nasty sinus infection while on a cruise, and was surprised to find that the cash price for the medication on board was less than his co-pay back home for the same thing in the US.

Which is why travel insurance covering medical/evacuation is so important. You still pay upfront for medical treatment onboard (or overseas), but you submit to your travel insurance company for reimbursement.

Just been in it, it has a walk in area. To see the Doctor is $149, plus medication, but you can seek nurse advice and buy items over the counter like a pharmacy.

They can undertake " first aid" IE emergency and stabilisation, it has a bed and x Ray, but limited, if serious there job is to look after you until a helicopter or SAR boat, or the ship can dock, and that's it.

They have regular hours like 9 am to 11 am and 4.30 to 7 pm, or just call in an emergency.

My mother used the medical facilities on the Magic extensively and she received excellent care from the nurses and doctors. If you go down there (deck 1forward, IF I RECALL CORRECTLY) and they aren't open, there is a phone you can call and they will come, but it is an additional charge for after hours. During open hours they can get busy. Their charges are actually very reasonable, and the trip insurance she bought through DCL ended up paying all of it, once her Medicare and BCBS denied the claim. I believe her bills were between $2-3000. i thought it would have been twice that.

I had some itching on my arm that was a little swollen, so I was a little concerned about what it could be. I went to the Medical facility and had them check it out for me. It turned out to be a Jelly fish bite. The Doctor prescribed me some Cortesone. The visit itself was $140 even if it turns out to be something minor and they check on you real quick. I am sure that it would cost more if it was something more. The facilities looked clean and pretty much what you'd expect. I think that they are staffed and able to handle most of the common illnesses or medical issues that come up on a cruise ship. Anything major or beyond that...maybe not...but at that point, you don't want treatment on a boat anyways.
