Medal vs Medallion

What's the difference between the marathon "medals" and the 5k "medallions". Thx!

The medallions are rubberized while the medals are metal. The medallions are actually a lot of fun, very colorful and the theme changes every year. The Jan half marathon medal is Donald and the full is Mickey. The Princess half medal is a crown, the DL half is a castle, and the Wine and Dine half is sort of Spaceship Earth with dangles. All of them are really awesome!

Yes, the ESPN 5K is an actual medal. If you follow this link you can see a picture of one from the 2009 race. 2010 was the same medal just a slightly different lanyard:
