So I didn't realize until it was too late that we are out of ketchup. Whomever finished it didn't mention it or buy anymore. :rolleyes1 Anyway, I used tomato paste in its place. Does anyone know if the substitution will be edible, or is it destined to be completely gross?

Thanks.

It should be fine. I never use ketchup in my meatloaf. I always use BBQ sauce instead.

I hate ketchup so I always substitute some other tomato-based product. Once I used V-8 and it was actually really good. Tomato paste would be fine.

I think the tomato paste will be fine...it might be a little more tomatoey than you're used to, so you might have to take a bit off at the end, but I'm betting it's good!

I myself like to use tomato sauce and mix a little bit of brown sugar, mustard powder, pepper and worchestershire sauce... it's really gooooood.

No ketchup here but I did throw in some leftover tomato soup. It was in the fridge ready to eat but I put half of it in the meatloaf. MMM great meal!!!

Try Sabretts onions in sauce!

I use my MIL's recipe and it isn't sweet at all. We love it.

1.5 lbs meat loaf mix or ground beef

1 envelope Lipton onion soup

1 egg

1 small can tomato sauce

1 slice bread torn

Mix all ingredients except meat and blend well. Add meat and mix. I use a heavy fork as I like my meatloaf looser and tender. I sometimes add some cheese to it also.

Bake until brown and smells good...about 1 hour.

Yum.

I've used tomato sauce with a little bit of brown sugar, too.

We use salsa in our meatloaf. It gives it a nice flavor.

I have never heard of making meat loaf with ketchup-- we don't use any type of tomato product when we make it so you should be just fine LOL...

Thanks everyone for your ideas. It's always nice to try something new.

I cooked the meatloaf last night, but we had it for lunch today. We just finished, and it was actually pretty good. I may continue to use tomato paste instead of the ketchup from now on. I put brown sugar on the bottom of the pan, spread tomato paste over that, and then put the meatloaf mixture in and baked. Not bad! :)

I use a mixture of ketchup (mainly), mustard, vinegar, and brown sugar. It's yummy.

I use no sauce in my meatloaf. You should be good.

I do this too, sometimes. That's how my dad used to make meatloaf. He never used tomato sauce at all. It was more of a brown sauce (frm the juices) loaf. It is great to slice into non-drippy sandwiches. :thumbsup2 When I learned to make my own, I cover the loaf pan with foil so the meatloaf doesn't form a dry crust. (A sauce on top would prevent the crust forming.)
