May Med Magic - May 15 2010 - Meet thread - Part 2

Is anyone taking gymwear. I can't decide whether to bring gym stuff or whether to just take 2 weeks off my normal routine.

I am bringing my gym wear with good intentions...at the very least I'll walk the track on deck 4.

So it seems like Thursday morning is the worst day there is to get anyone to take me to the airport. Everyone has doctor's appointments, meetings they can't miss, etc. So, against my better judgement, I accepted a ride from a friends' sister. Yep, you guessed it, she called me today to tell me "Gee, sorry, but I can't take you to the airport." Seems their Mom, who refuses to move closer (she lives 2 1/2 hours away) but relies on them to help her when she needs it, is getting the cast off her broken arm Wednesday, and the sister is driving up Wednesday to take her to the doctor, and will be driving back on Thursday. Honestly, I'm not surprised, and I suppose it's better for her to cancel on me today than on Thursday. :headache:

There's nothing like Super Shuttle here. My options really are: driving myself & leaving the car in the parking lot for 18 days, or taking a taxi. I haven't decided yet which I'm going to do; either will be expensive. I think I'm leaning towards the taxi, just so I don't have to worry about it, and so I won't have to drive myself home when I get back (I *do* have a ride for when I get home on the Sunday).

I suppose if this is the worst thing that happens to me on this trip, I'm doing well... but I wish I didn't need to worry about it!

Sayhello

Take the taxi. Parking fees for 18 days will be $180-$200. Unless you live 50 miles from the airport, a taxi won't be higher than that.

Are there any airport hotels with a park and ride package? Sometimes the cost of the room is waaaaay less than paying for parking at the airport. Just a thought.

Jill

Would it be cheaper to hire a car for the day??
You know, that actually isn't a half bad idea! I'm going to look into that... Especially if I could pick it up local & leave it at the airport...

Also worth looking into! I don't know if there are, because I've never had to do it, but I will definitely check that.

This is also true. Last time I took a taxi home from the airport (it's been a few years) it was $50-ish. Definitely less than $180-$200!!

I agree with Jeff. I was debating the same thing, but decided to take a taxi, even though parking would be about $40 cheaper, because if for some reason you have to fly into a different airport on the way home, your car is not at the original airport.

I'm lucky that we have Super Shuttle here. Found a 15% discount online so the round trip is only $46. Not too shabby.

Take the gym stuff. At least it will be there if you would like to use it.

Chin up Charlotte!

Sounds like you have had one of them days - im sure things will seem better in the morning.

We are also flying in on Saturday (7.15am Easyjet flight from Liverpool)

Am starting to get a bit worried now & like you it will be too late to sort anything else out if we don't find out until Saturday am that our flight is cancelled

Fingers crossed our flights will depart as scheduled!

Update on the BA strikes (for return journeys) BA have some contingency plans:

All flights from Gatwick and London City airports are expected to operate as normal, BA said, while a "substantial" number of long-haul flights from Heathrow will run as planned.

There will be daily flights from Heathrow to all short-haul destinations, BA said, but did not give any numbers.

As with the strikes in March, the airline is also planning to lease extra aircraft from other carriers and re-book passengers on cancelled flights onto other airlines.

Thankyou sorry to be so dramatic it just horrid when you have no control on the situation !! Like you say finger crossed and magic dust (not bloddy volcanic ):wizard: xx

Found this one when looking for something that tracks the ash cloud in near real time and has flight information on it. To get the ash cloud to show up, go over to the right and click on the "Layers" tab and then check the "Volcano Ashes Layer". Since this is Google Map based, you can check the satellite or hybrid versions of the map. You can also identify and track a particular flight. One more important thing - the site doesn't work with Explorer. You need to use Firefox or some other browser.

It looks like there is going ro be a pretty good size crowd of us at the fountains. We are not on the list, but we will try our best to be there. Sounds like fun.:goodvibes

Hi

I'm also worried about the volcano. We are leaving Friday night (arriving in Barcelona at noon). So we can't have a big delay. I'm crossing my finger.

On a positive note here is the weather for the beginning of our cruise
Saturday Barcelona 63 (18) 40% chance of shower (better than the 60% they had yesterday)
Monday Valletta 73 (23) sunny
Tuesday Tunis 79 (26) mostly sunny
Wednesday Naples 76 (24) sunny

It sure beat the weather we have in Quebec today 34 (1)

Has anyone seen what Sayhello's pick was on the number of posts? Im just the conspiracy therorist but those are some long posts.... Im on to you girl!:rolleyes1
Charlotte, go get a beer, its out of our hands.:drinking1
Jeff, are the people meeting at the fountains going to wear anything to identify themselves so we don't get stabbed by a local when we walk up to see if they are with our group? Im not sure if we will be there on Friday or not since we may plan on doing this Thursday night as a means of keeping the kids up but if we are there should we wear something to identify ourselves? I have an idea, Ill show up early and start swimming naked in the fountain which should identify me as a member of the DIS so no confusion there! Remember, the water is probably cold so no small comments.

Hi all. First chance I have had to check in since sat. Lots of posts again.

Well we were panicking a bit with this Bl.... Ash cloud, so have booked flights for Wed am. We are booked on flights Friday afternoon, but do not want to risk it. This way we have two chances of flights and maybe the opportunity to see some of Barcelona.
If we do get there on wednesday, we would love to meet you all at the Fountains. I am taking my Netbook so will log in to get details and hopefully keep up with all the postings.
I wont have chance tomorrow to sign in I think, so would like to wish everyone, safe travels over the next few days and am really looking forward to meeting you on the Magic.
