May be moving to PA......

We may be moving to PA next year. My DH is AD Air Force for the last 9 years. He is currently in Pa on a job interview that he is interested in accepting. If the accepts the job he will join the Guard.
Anybody live in Pa have any advice? We will be living by State College. There are a few in Mifflinburg and Winfield that I like.

We have 3 children who are 9,4, and 2. So this is a big decision for us.

Any help about the area would be appreciated.
The good news is we will only be 19 hours from WDW!!!!!

What questions do you have?

I'm not sure how far away Mifflinburg and Winfield are, but I"ve never even heard of the latter.

I looked up the company you mentioned. It's funny because my DH deals with something similiar in the AF but he is ready for a change.

I went back to realtor.com and it seems like the same houses have been on there for months now! None of them fit the bill for us though.

A good friend ours recently bought the old college campus and is turning it into many different things. My DH will be opening a classic car museum and an auto parts store.

PA property taxes depend on your township. I doubt that rural area will be high.

We live the other direction from State College - between altoona and State College. We have lived here all of our lives and love it. We have 4 children : DS 11 DD 8 DS4 DS3. I can't imagine raising our kids anywhere else! We live in a rural area which is great for our family but we have all of the benefits of the University 25 minutes away. DH has always wanted to move to Alaska though!

WOw! That's good to hear you love it there!! We are originally from Ohio and really miss the area.

We always wanted to come to Alaska too but after 3 cold winters of -50 enough is enough!! But we have enjoyed our time here!

We live about an hour from State College. My brother will be going to Penn State in a couple weeks. My family really loves it there. It is a nice college town. Yes, I think the property taxes will depend on where you live exactly. Maybe the taxes will be less than what you are paying now??

Hi, me again...We live in Mifflin County, which is 30 minutes from Penn State. It has pretty rural areas. And here property taxes are very low, but in State College they are very high (why we live in Mifflin County). Some of the towns around here are Reedsville, Lewistown, Belleville, Milroy...You can look them up on realtor.com. What is this old college campus you are speaking of?

The name of the college is Laurelton center and then was turned into a orphanage (is that the correct term?). It is about 40 miles from state college.
It's in Union County.

Wow, I did a search for the "laurelton center" and read a lot about its history. Are these your friends? "The buyer, Gary Murphy, owner of Mountain Valley Inc., Dayton Md., has said previously he wants to develop the 366-acre complex into a hotel with ancillary recreation and business ventures." That's from a Daily Item article.

Unfortuanately, that's all on the other side of State College, the part I'm unfamiliar with...but if there's anything I can help you with, just ask!

Gary and his son Rob are our friends. My Dh met Rob while he was stationed up here in Alaska.
Hopefully it's not on the "bad" side of State College . This is killing me!! My DH is there now and has taken alot of pictures of the land where the building will be going and housing.
My Dh will find out today what is in charge of.

No, its not the bad side of state college, just the one I'm unfamilar with. I'm a transplant myself. I was born in the Philadelphia area. I really don't think there are bad sides anywhere, its pretty much just a bunch of trees everywhere with some towns thrown in. Yes, there's crime in the larger towns like Williamsport, but unless you are living downtown there's really not much to worry about.

I was in the Pa. Army Guard, too. What's his job (MOS)? Any idea what unit he'd be in? Oh, just read he would be AIR guard. I hear the Air guard is really nice here. I wished I would've joined it instead.

Hi,and I want to welcome you to PA. The entire State College area is beautiful. I graduated from Penn State and I also worked as a Rehab Nurse and covered the entire area travelling to see clients. State College is a beautiful college town, that is quiet when the students are gone, and unbelievably packed to the gills when the students are back. It is just lovely though.

The areas surrounding are mostly rural. I don't know of a bad side of Penn State. The weather is wonderful with the change of seasons. Autumn is so colorful and the air is crisp. Winters can be cold and blustery, but now Alaska for sure. My DH retired from the Air National Guard and went to the State College Guard Unit to help give vacinations. We do pay a state income tax in PA, but we don't pay sales tax on necessities such as clothing, food etc. Our property tax is dependent on the city or township or boro you live in. Property tax is high in State College because the college is non profit and tax exempt.

My DH has travelled the world with the AF and says PA looks just like England or Germany with the rolling hillsides and farmland. I have lived here all of my 56 years and love the change of seasons. Penn State is very exciting on football days - it is a sea of cars and people from everywhere - unbelievable! My DSIL played division I football against Penn State and he said he never saw anything like it.

You won't be far from Hershey either. It is a lovely town. And I live in Lebanon which is in the heart of the PA Dutch country and Lancaster PA where Witness was filmed. I have neighbors who ride horse and buggy to Walmart to shop and to bank and tie their horse out front!

My son was born @ 7:03 p.m.. What a coincedence(sp?)!!

My Dh is Munitions but will be crosstraining before going into the guard. I am not sure what squadron but I will ask him when he gets home tomorrow.

We are going to WDW in Sept 2007 too! My sig says August but we were denied to leave here a month early. I haven't made my reservations yet but we are wanting to stay at POP and arrive on the 15th and leave on the 21st. We are also planning on going to Universal and IOA.
