May 5, 2010 Magic of Barcelona

Saw this on the May 26th 10 night thread:

Got this information from the Conicerge yesterday. Thought it might be helpful to all.

26 - Let The Magic Begin
27 - Formal Night
28- Rotational
29 - Rotational
30 - Rotational
31 - Master Chef
1 - Pirates and Villans
2 - Flavors of the Med
3 - Captains Gala
4 - Till We Meet Again

I figure ours will be similar or the same.

How formal is formal night? What is acceptable/required? We don't want to bring too much luggage and were curious. BTW, my name is Kaleigh and my husband and I just booked this cruise and are super-excited. I look forward to getting to know you and meeting you on the cruise.

Welcome!

For formal night you will see many women in long dresses, some will wear nice LBD or other cocktail dresses, some beaded dresses and some just nice church dresses - it can run the spectrum. For men, lots in tuxes or military dress uniforms and many in suits. Semi-formal night is mainly cocktail type dresses, nice church type dresses or a dressy pants outfit; coat & tie for the guys. Lots of little girls in princess dresses both nights - so cute!

You are not "required" to dress up for either but many people choose to do so. Some people also dress up for Pirate night.

I'm planning to bring a long dress for formal night and probably a beaded vest with dress pants and blouse for semi formal night. May bring a Pirate outfit for dd and I if I can find something inexpensively.

Anyone want to share movie or TV suggestions of shows that feature our cruise ports of call?

I watched "Under the Tuscan Sun" last week - loved the incredible scenery, some interesting cultural observations, rated PG-13(pre-view before letting kids watch - most of the movie was OK but there were a couple scenes not suitable for kids).

Roman Holiday comes to mind...

There was also a movie with Robert Downey Jr. and Marissa Tomei called 'Only You' that was set in Italy. I don't think it was that great of a movie, but...

Parts of Star Wars were filmed in Tunisia.

Um...the Maltese Falcon? Probably not actually Malta-related, lol. Popeye was filmed there, and so were parts of Troy, Alexander, The Count of Monte Criston, Cutthroat Island and Gladiator.

Corsica...um, I think there was a Cheech & Chong movie about Corsican brothers...

For France, I'm sure there are a number of films set around Monte Carlo. I gotta go with 'Herbie goes to Monte Carlo' though!

Cheech & Chong....
There's a new movie out called "When in Rome" - don't know much about it though.
There must be a James Bond movie in Monte Carlo.
DS will be so excited about the Star Wars fact.

Well, we booked our flights today. I got tired of waiting and really wanted to be sure we had good seats. My mom hates to be in the back of the plane. I've been watching the prices for awhile now and they haven't fluctuated much more than $10. For us, we have to get to a hub airport to fly overseas, so that part of the trip was just not going to change much. It also limited the flights we could choose from going out and coming back, unless we wanted a 30 hour trip home. But, its done and it actually wasn't terrible. About $2800 for 3 of us, $2000 of which I used Amex points to cover, so really, can't complain.

So, its official! The Campbell's are going to be on their way! The only thing I haven't done is make the reservations for Disneyland Paris, but supposedly deals for our dates will start coming out soon. The current offers only go through April 1. Otherwise, we're all booked up. Except excursions, which I can't do until Thursday. I think I have them ready though.

There are podcasts in itunes about the ports from 2007.
Wish they had done them this year as well.

YEAH for Amex points!! What a relief to know they're booked! I was sure January would show sale fares...now counting on February! American Airlines and Delta are so close...Delta is finally offering air sales through May 30th but so far just to South America..and AA is through April 17th..so hoping the next release of fare sales will help me, I need 7 tickets!! So hanging on for that extra fare decrease will save me lots...if I were just booking 3 I would have gone for it, too!! :)

Pixie dust to all those waiting!!!

When, exactly, can silver cc members book their excursions?

If I'm not wrong, you can book right now..I think it was 90 or 100 day mark and we should be at both of them! Or very close!! :)

There was a great movie based on a true story with Gregory Peck and Christopher Plummer...set in the Vatican City and around Italy...I think it was called the Scarlet and the Black, it was a made for TV series that shows a priest hiding Jews and others during WW2....we watched it through Netflix..loved it.

There were many episodes of teeny bopper shows (Olsen Twins, Samantha somebody) where they went to Rome and other places in Europe...it might be fun for the kids...

For parents (just a couple of non-nudity making out scenes) there was a movie with Kevin Kline and the blonde who played in Sleepless in Seattle oh! MEg Ryan..it's about a girl heading to Paris to get her boyfriend back but realizes she doesn't want him back...scenery of vineyards and stuff like that...I thought it was cute. I'm horrible with movie names!!

The Madeleine movies were set in France, might have even made it to Spain or ITaly in one of them.

HTH!

That made me think of Angels and Demons! I'm not a Dan Brown fan, but there were lots of beautiful shots of the city.

I remember that one! Barely. I think Meg's character was really clumsy or something? Obviously, not a hugely memorable movie, but it might have some nice scenery.
