Anyone worried about this flu going around now...I'm almost afraid to get off in Mexico. It was headlines of our local paper today and I'm starting to get freaked out!
http://www.mcall.com/news/nationworld/sns-ap-med-swine-flu,0,2772457.story

Not worried yet. There are no reports of anyone infected in cozumel. To me it is very similar (at least now) to people in the US having verified swine flu. You wouldn't skip the US since there are people here that has is. Mexico is still pretty big and hopefully they are working hard to make sure it doesn't spread. I might be more worried about who is getting on the ship (and who have they had contact with) than I am about the port.

Either way, I will be using the wipes they hand out (and the little stations everywhere). It still amazes me that I saw so many people on our last cruise who didn't want to take a wipe.

The article does say the the NYC infected people were in Cancun for a trip 2 weeks before they got it...unfortunately where I live many people also commute back and forth to NYC!

But the incubation period of this flu I thought was 24-48 hours. I'm not sure that it just hung around in their system for a couple of weeks before they got it. I might be wrong - I'm no doctor - and I haven't stayed at a Holiday Inn express in years.:lmao:

That was a good one!!
So far the areas affected are mexico city and another state north of it, my husband has family in Merida (4 hrs from Cancun-Cozumel) and they haven't had anything down there, but we are following this closely and will post if there are any reports down there..

I'm not worried about it. For one various serious flus go around here in the US too and we're not leaving because of it LOL for two- we're on a DCL excursion in Cozumel and don't plan on going into the "non-touristy" areas nor do we plan to eat or drink at Cozumel (except on the ship ofcourse). I don't think it's something that would keep me from going on the island completely- just be safe about things while you're there. I will say also that if it is something serious enough -then DCL will be worried about it and possibly not dock there. It's obviously not that serious of a threat to tourists docking there- yet, atleast.

And with that said.. just saw the title of another thread talking about how they might go to different ports. OH NO.. that's the port we're doing snuba and my son will be so upset. This was his "consolation" excursion (you know- "almost as good") since he can't scuba dive on this cruise. rutroh........
I hope they pick another port (if they don't go here) that we can do that at and not just make another sea day. But I suppose we'll live with whatever happens. DS will have to deal. LOL I'm glad that is the DCL excursion we're doing -so we'll get refunded for sure without a hassle!

I also have our Dolphin Encounter booked in Cozumel to surprise my kids.

Upon reading the other threads about this.... they might end up cancelling Cozumel if this continues. Someone mentioned in the past when a port couldn't be made they went to Castaway Cay twice! Now that I'd be okay with- that's way way WAY better than just another day at sea. Sea days are great (we know that- that's why we're looking forward to our TA in 2010) but I'll take Castaway Cay over another sea day- any day! I think that woud help us get over missing our snuba in Cozumel. LOL We have been to cozumel before too... which is why I was okay with this being the one port that we did an excursion WITHOUT our youngest. We always do each port for ALL of us- never left any of the kids on the ship. But since she was too young to do this (plus she wasn't interested in doing it anyway!) and we'd already been to Cozumel before- this was the one port we planned on doing an excursion without her. DS would be bummed (DH also), me and eldest DD won't be extremely bummed- but I think it would all be "made better" if they did 2 days at CC instead of one- to make up for it. What do you guys think? Good idea or not?

(ps on a more personal note/risk- Texas is being mentioned and we LIVE in Texas. Far scarier than just avoiding a port of call on a cruise- for us I mean)

Oh I would love another day at CC, that would be great!!

I am wondering what anyone knows about the incubation period?

We actually have one prescription for Tamilfu now, but we are going to try to get more to have when we travel. I am most concerned that the meds wouldn't be available if we were to get sick while onboard. If they do then I wonder what type of stock we would be talking about. Anyone know any specifics about pharmaceuticals onboard? Do they have meds other than just over the counter type stuff??

I would venture to guess that we won't dock there anyway, as this has blown way up just since Friday when I first heard about it.

I would way rather go to Castaway another day instead of adding a sea day.

All I see on the threads is a few people raising an alarm telling everyone to call disney and tell them not to go to Mexico. There are over 10,000 possible passenger of cruise ship per day that goes to cozumel and not one reported instance. I would be more worried about the good ol US since it seems to be spreading faster and more around here then in Mexico. It seems very centralized there, but here there is Kansas, TX, California, NY, Ohio and who know where else.

I do hope for Cozumel, and I hope my wife can go to the authentic Mexican cooking school that she has signed up for. I'm not too worried yet, but I will keep an eye on the news (and kinda ignore the disboards for this information).

The CDC website says that people can be contagious for up to 7 days after onset of symptoms. Young children might be longer. Here is a quote right from their website:

How long can an infected person spread swine flu to others?
People with swine influenza virus infection should be considered potentially contagious as long as they are symptomatic and possible for up to 7 days following illness onset. Children, especially younger children, might potentially be contagious for longer periods.

But I wonder how long before you typically show symptoms?

I'll look at the CDC website, I though I had read all of that but I guess I missed that one.

Thanks!

A second day at Castaway Cay would be great. We did the 4 day double-dip last May and loved it!

I'm sure DCL will take care of us and not go to Cozumel if there's a problem. I'm not worried about it 'cause I've got enough on my mind right now (school, dd's graduation, getting everyone cruise-ready).

We just signed up for the Mexican Cooking school too! That is something we would never do if we were with the kids, and that is the big birthday for my DH. And he loves to cook. I am really excited about that!

But, it is what it is...so I am not worried either way! :)

It'll be sorta in between the rooms I suppose if you look at it that way- but technically we'll know which room it goes to- we won't think of it as "in between rooms". But trust if you have two rooms on the list and we only see one FE on one of those rooms- we'll adjust our FE gifts accordingly. Certainly not everyone always has seperate FE's on all the rooms they have. :)
I would say if you only have one FE though- then you should have more pockets... like one pocket for all of you for both rooms is gonna make it a tight squeeze on gifts. LOL but I highly doubt you were planning on just one pocket anyway. LOL

Um...now I'm confused on what you're thinking?
I don't think it's normal to wait THAT long for your tender.
I'm also not sure if you previously said it was a DCL excursion or not.

If it's a DCL excursion the time it says for your excursion is really the time you meet- and your tickets in you room when you get in it will say what time/where to meet for your excursion. In our experience it's usually in one of the bar areas and you generally leave pretty quickly after the "meet" time unless maybe they wait a few minutes for someone who hasn't made it yet. But they stay on schedule pretty well.

If it's NOT a DCL excursion you go get a ticket and they herd you in -in order- from what I understand. And then tendering is in order of when you got your ticket. So I don't really think you'd be waiting that long. Let's say they start tendering at or shortly after 7:30am- if you were one of the first in line to get your tickets- then you'd be the first to tender and that means you aren't waiting an hour and a half. And it keeps going in order like that- so I think generally there isn't THAT long of a wait between the time you get your ticket and the time you actually tender... it's kinda like a line (except instead of standing in a long line to tender you are basically "getting in line" by getting your ticket and then waiting in a sitting area like the theatre). It is NOT like you get your ticket then have to sit around waiting an hour and a half for "your time" to go- it's all in order of how you got your tickets so it keeps moving and each person/family/group shouldn't have to wait that long from the time they get their ticket... I don't think? I do not believe it's like okay your excursion is later- so you get a ticket for later and get to sit here longer. NO, I know it's not that way because they make announcements and in the paperwork I've seen about the tendering (in the room) basically says if you need to get off early- then come early because it goes in order of how you got your tickets. It is NOT like someone has a 8am excursion so they get a ticket sooner than you and yours is 10:30 so you get a later one- not like that. It only goes in order of how you received your tickets on a first come first served basis... and then you tender in order of how you received your tickets in that first come first served basis- so I don't think anyone sits around for hours to wait to tender. Even if you came later towards the end of the line- still wouldn't have to wait that long. Let's say they start at 7:30 and you showed up at 9am- well open tendering generally ends up starting not too long after that anyway- so even in that situation I can't imagine you having to wait an hour and a half... yanno?

No worries. :)

I assume you have a DCL excursion since your excursion time is 7:30 right when we get to port. So 7:30 is when you meet (ticket will say where) and you leave for your excursion shortly after that- pretty shortly after the meet time... so be there on time! :)

Yep we have a DCL excursion in Grand Cayman. I didn't think they'd make us wait if our start time was 7:30, but I figured I'd ask. Thanks for trying to clear this up. You're very sweet to respond.

Counting the days....

I don't know how I gave the impression that you'd wait an hour for a tender. Normal waiting is more like 15 minutes.

It's all clear now. The time frame came from the difference from my excursion of 7:30 and the tendering time you said of 9:00-9:30. All is well. Since it's a DCL excursion, I'm not going to worry about. I'll just follow directions, and I know we'll be taken care of.

I'm glad to help- if I can! LOL Not sure I helped clear it up but now I understand what you were thinking... between time of excursion with DCL and "open tendering" time. I can see how that would be confusing at first. :) But never fear... you won't be waiting or even having to get tender tickets (I don't think) if you have a DCL excursion. The tender tickets is for everyone else that wants to get off the ship early that doesn't have a DCL excursion. :)

I know- we're counting days too! So much to do though- and still homeschooling/etc. Some things I have to wait till we get a bit closer in time though for various reasons- but we leave on the 22nd so we're getting down to the wire pretty soon! :)

Unfortunately, it is just my wife doing the cooking school. I wanted to do it to but someone has to watch the kids;). I don't plan on us being far apart. I booked the beach break at Playa Mia which is the same place as the cooking school. We could just walk in and say hi if we wanted. After the school, there is beach time so she could just come out and join us then. I'm hoping all works out well with that. I'm glad there will be someone else that is going on the same excursion.

Well....I was going to post a "funny" about how some of my guests are worrying about the pirate's taking over the ship...the one in the Indian Ocean....and worrying about swine flu. Actually, it was funny watching the posts from these 18 year olds. All they heard was "pirates" and their brains started whirling.

As to flu...currently there are NO cases reported in the areas we will be traveling. I'm sure it will spread over the next month. As to what DCL might do about ports, etc. people are just speculating. As far as I know, DCL has made no announcements of any changes. They have contracts with the planned ports, and would probably incur serious financial penalties for unjustified changes...but I'm speculating. I have no idea what their contracts with the ports really say.

I don know that they re-route cruises for weather related issues. I've had that happen at least twice (cruise went somewhere other than where planned), and had ports missed at least 3 other times.

IF DCL felt there was a danger, they would take appropriate precautions.

The ship has a small but well stocked pharmacy. Since they are aware of this issue, they are probably stocking up on tamiflu and other anti-viral drugs. They don't have "everything" in the sense of what your local pharmacy will have, but they have a couple of choices in each of the major categories. For instance, they may not have a choice of 50 antibiotics, but they'll have 5...and they're never more than 2 days from a port during the normal cruises.

Many years ago, I was invited to visit the medical facility (I'm a doc and I met the ship's doc at the Captain's Gala....this was pre 9/11...I don't think they'd allow anyone to do this now). This is NOT a normal tour available to people. Sorry, I posted about this once and people started asking how they could get this tour--you can't. In any event, I was VERY impressed with the facility They basically have a one bed ICU. It has everything you'd find in a well equipped hospital, and a lot more than I've seen in some small, rural hospitals. There are other areas for more "normal" stuff. After all, they are basically THE medical care for the 1000 CMs; granted, these are relatively young, relatively healthy people or they wouldn't be in that job. THey maintain regular records, etc. on the crew. In addition, they are the emergency care for the 2700 guests each week....some of whom are not relatively young or relatively healthy. They do not want to get "stuck" with a long term, serious situation--what they don't have is a doc from every medical specialty that might be needed or the staff needed to cover a critically ill patient 24/7. Thus, the goal is to stabilize and evacuate a critically ill person.

SO....I'll say basically the same thing to this group that I said to my "kids." Take a deep breath and chill out--we don't know anything yet. We all have to wait and see what happens with this flu thing.

I don't think we have any worries from the pirates who are active in the Indian Ocean. However, the Disney Magic is regularly taken over by pirates; at least once a week, Captain Hook and Mr. Smee and their gang cause all sorts of commotion on the ship until the main mouse appears to put things to rights.
