May 28, 2011 - 11 Night Mediterranean Sailing from Barcelona

We're definitely not looking at a sold-out cruise, I'd say!

Is that a good thing or a bad thing? hehehe :) I think (for selfish reasons) it would be nice not to have a sold-out cruise. That way it won't be as busy/crazy/crowded. But then again, I have never cruised before so I am just assuming. Gosh, I can't wait! So excited! :yay:

From our point of view, definitely a good thing! First, because if there are empty staterooms come departure date, we all stand a better chance of getting a nice little upgrade :)
Second, and probably more significantly, it will be less crowded on board, which has multiple benefits from our point of view - greater crew-to-passenger ratio (meaning more personal attention), greater availability for everything from childcare to DCL excursions to spa treatments, more space to spread around the pool area... you name it!

Not so good for Disney from a commercial point of view of course. I assume disappointing sales on this cruise may have contributed to their decision not to do Med cruises next year.

I vote to add dylan's mom in to the FE group!!!!

I need at least a second or third on this vote before we add dylan's mom. I would like to get a majority vote if possible. You can PM me or use the website to send me a message if you don't want it to be posted in the forum.

I'm okay with it also, but my vote isn't going to count.

Cindy

I was just on the DCL website and looked at the cabin availability for our cruise.
There are many, many stateroom catagories available !!

Do you think this means our cruise is way undersold ???

DH and I went to Montsurrat when we were on the 2007 DCL Med cruise.
If you have the time, go ! It's a good 1/2 day excursion but easily done on your own. Let me know if you need transp info and I'll check with my husband.

Thanks so much! We'd love any transportation info we can get!!! :goodvibes

I am okay with it. :thumbsup2 I ran out of my first gift purchase a long time ago so I need to go buy/find some more anyway.

I received a call yesterday from DCL regarding the "Sweet Corsica" tour. They left a message stating that the winery visit on that tour has been replaced with an "oil essential factory" visit? Said that the winery had a previous commitment! :confused3

Today we signed up for the Sweet Corsica Tour. Did DCL say what this " Oil Essential Factory" is all about ? Perfume oils...olive oils ???:confused3

We were thinking about including my 6 1/2 Grandson. Does anyone know if it would be interesting for kids ?

Thanks so much! We'd love any transportation info we can get!!! :goodvibes

Found this info by googling "Montserrat on your own"

For our day in Barcelona I would like to see Montserrat.
I would appreciate if someone could give instructions from the port to the train station and assess if doing this on your own is advisable.

The most thrilling way to arrive at Montserrat is by train and cable car from Barcelona. FGC trains (line R5: Montserrat-Manresa) leave from beneath Plaça d'Espanya daily 8.36am-3.36pm at hourly intervals; get off at Montserrat Aeri, just under an hour away. From here, a cable car (the Telefèric de Montserrat Aeri; every 15min, daily 10am-1.45pm & 3-6.35pm) completes the journey, a five-minute swoop up the sheer mountainside to a spot just below the monastery - probably the most exhilarating ride in Catalunya. If being suspended on cable at great height is not your thing, take the bus; a half-hour ride departing ten minutes after the trains pull in. A return ticket, including train and cable car, costs €11.50, and there are also two combined tickets: the Transmontserrat, which includes the metro, train, cable car and the two funiculars on the mountain (€17.40 return) and the Totmontserrat which includes all of this plus museum entry, unlimited use of funiculars, lunch and a five-percent accommodation discount (€29.50); both tickets are available from any FGC station. Returning to Barcelona, the trains back from Montserrat Aeri station are again hourly, this time from 10.35am to 6.35pm.
Practically, the first train you can get from Placa d'Espanya to Monserrat is the 8.36 (on the R5 route). This is because both the cable car and Cremella (rack railway) don't start operating until this train arrives at their respective stations. Aim to get to Placa d'Espanya by 8.15am and wait for the train to pull in to the platform. As this is essentially a commuter train, there is lots of standing room and not very many seats. So, when the train doors open, do not be polite! Get on the train as quick as you can and grab a seat...its a 1 hour trip to Monserrat!

Just one addendum, if you don't fancy the cable car, you can use the rack railway (Cremella) which leaves from Monistrol, which is the next station after Monserrat Aeri. The rack train will be waiting for you at the end of the platform and takes about 30 mins to get up to the monastery.
Also, be aware of your departure time and make sure you leave enough time to get back to the ship.

lambs2 is vorrect. We were in Barcelona (not on a cruise though) last May and did this exactly. It was a snap and we had a wonderful day out. Would highly recommend it. We had no issue with the train, lots of seats on our train. BUT...be careful and ensure that you get on the right train. As I recall you need to pay attention and read the signs.

This info is 2008 but this is how we went in 2007.
Someone else might have more recent info.

The main thing :
If you don't want to ride the cable car , DON'T get off at Montserrat Aeri.
Get off at the next stop and change to the rack railway. VERY easy to do !

Searching for info ..... I learned from one of the DisBoard Moderators that it's easier to find info by just Googling rather than using the disboards search engine !!:thumbsup2

We vote yes for dylan's mom, we bought our gifts so we have more than enough. :thumbsup2

Simian, thanks for mentioning that you are also waiting for your GTY, I was beginning to worry that we were alone in that situation. I'm past being excited to find out what our stateroom is and sort of now dread checking the reservation as it just keeps reading "#GTY." Also we have not received our cruise documents and it sounds as if most people have. Are you in the same boat, so to speak? Oh well, it'll be a happy day when either of those things happen.

Yes, exactly the same situation, no stateroom, no docs yet. And we're not the only ones - I've seen other posters in the last couple of days expressing anxiety about this too "pj-atsea" is one, for example). But I'm sure we'll get our assignments in the next few days and we'll all be happy. And from what I understand, even if our cruise docs don't show up it's no biggie - the only thing you need is to complete online check-in and print it out and bring it with you. Luggage tags etc. can be dealt with at port if necessary.

I'm going to add dylan'smom to the FE list, but only has an optional. She understands that she's too late to join. If you have already made your FEs and don't have room for more or the option to make more you don't have to give them an FE.

I'm sure she would understand if she didn't get something from everyone.

Wow!! Thanks so much! It sounds great! It'll be nice to have something to look forward to after we have to get off the Magic (often the worst part of the vacation :sad1:).

Absolutely!! And thanks for the warm welcome!!!! :cloud9:

Interesting that the GTYs are not all assigned for this cruise yet...ours were assigned at 30 days for the ta, but who knows the method to their madness...lol Hoping it means they are way less than full?? I'm tempted to book now at the restricted fare just to get on the boat, but the temptation of a $350 on board credit is winning currently!!

Also, we went to Monserrat last year - just beautiful. We did a compromise between DCL & on our own, but using a tour through the HOHO bus web site. I'll post some pics in a while when I find them... There are 2 hoho bus companies in Barcelone & we felt the best one was the one with the big eye on it....I'll find the site.....

I haven't read this whole thread & this may be old news...but I noticed a discussion about getting there, so wanted to share a bit.. We really found it fascinating...and the gift shop had the best olive oil I've ever encountered - no joke!!

Try to get there before Noon....the boy's choir sings in the Basilica every day around that time.

On the way are amazing sculptures carved from the side of the mountain by famous artists, depicting the mysteries of the Rosary.

For those of you, like myself, who signed up for this tour, I found the following info on another sight :

( of course it mentions the winery that we won't be going to )

A Taste of Corsica
This trip is about as laid-back as it gets, with the focus falling very much on tradition. You’ll head through the outskirts of town, delving deep into the fragrant Corsican countryside. The first place you’ll come to is a winery where you’ll get chance to try the fruity local tipples. You can purchase a bottle or two of your favourites, then head off to a factory specialising in essential oils. If you thought the countryside smelled sweet, wait until you get to this place. The air is thick with the scent of natural oils and remedies, which you’ll see being made from local herbs and flowers. Moving on, you’ll stop off at a family-run nougat factory. Indulge your sweet tooth with a few chunks of this French fancy. You’ll get to see a step-by-step demonstration of how it’s made, too. Plus, if you’ve developed a taste for it, there’s time to buy the ones you like best before heading back to the ship. Just So You Know… There’s a small uphill walk to the herb location.

For those who are still worried because you haven't received your cruise documents, here is an extract of the answer I received from Disney:

...

Thank you for choosing a Disney Cruise Line vacation!

I would be happy to assist with information regarding your cruise
documents.

You should receive your final cruise documents approximately 15 to 21
days prior to travel.

Your document packet will be sent via Federal Express (FedEx) and will
take approximately 2-5 business days for delivery, barring any delays in
Customs.

...

As far as your stateroom assignment, this has not taken place yet.

...

I hope this information has been helpful. If you require further
assistance in planning your visit, please feel free to contact us.

We look forward to sailing with you!

Have a Magical Day!

Any one got aany idea what films will be showing this trip

David & Jane

We're very much hoping that they play the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie! It would seem appropriate and we are unlikely to have time to se it before we go!!

We're very much hoping that they play the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie! It would seem appropriate and we are unlikely to have time to se it before we go!!

Pirates will have its premEAR on DCL during our TA - same day as on land. :cool2:

Currently showing:
Up, Princess and the Frog, Toy Story III, Secretariat, Tangled, Tron, Gnomio and Juliet, I am number 4, Mars needs Moms, African Cats, and Prom. May change, of course! When we saw the premier of TS3, TS 1 & 2 were shown right before that - so maybe the first Pirates will precede the new one too...?

.

Hey Bev (Dylan'smom), don't wait to book onboard! Book now!! Too many of our TA friends are getting off, stay onboad with me!! :cheer2:
