May 19 - 24, 2014 San Diego to Vancouver

I am totally new to this discussion board and to the Disney Cruise Line! I booked my family's first ever cruise as a Christmas present to them. I am a mother of 3 teenagers and recently graduated from graduate school and passed my boards and am now a practicing Certified Nurse Midwife. My family has put up with a lot of my being absent from them during schooling and I want to reward them with some wonderful family time - THUS I booked this cruise! I'm so excited. Any tips would be wonderful! Thanks! Myra

Welcome Myra and family! You are going to have a wonderful time. There are so many things to do for families on the Disney Wonder. Your teens may enjoy some time to themselves in Edge or Vibe whilst you enjoy some relaxing adult time by the pool or at the spa, whatever suits you. Then, there are trivia, games, tours, excursions, and so many fun things to do together. Enjoy!

Tip: Don't try to do everything! It's impossible and you won't be able to relax or enjoy your time together. Leave lots of time between activities to play a game together, go swimming, see a movie, or whatever your family enjoys doing together. Have fun, relax, and take a few photos to remember it all when it's over.

You are going to have SO MUCH FUN!!! You have no idea. It's a blast.

Some tips, from a once-before cruiser. Mostly just ramblings of things I can think of on the spot! haha.

Bring water bottles, the big ones. You can fill them up for excursions before you leave the boat.
If you are a soda drinking family, there is a soda machine near the buffet and you can fill up the same bottles or bring others.
You can mix the chocolate ice cream with a little hot coffee and stir it up for a mocha milkshake. Or reverse the portions and do coffee with a little chocolate ice cream. Yum!
Prepare to walk a lot. Going from front to back and back and forth was more walking than I expected. Stairs, elevators, etc. Comfy deck shoes are a must!
The movies are cool, free, 3D, and easy to hop in and out. They play them in your room too, but the TV's are small. If you guys like movies you'll see a lot of newer Disney movies there.
Board games are fun, if you have some favorties, bring some with you, you'll have time to play them while you relax, they do have some at a few of the bar areas. 4 days at sea is a long time on the boat in a 5 day cruise.
Pace your eating. You will eat a lot! And don't be afraid to ask for ANYTHING. If you want kids mac n' cheese every night as a starter, just say that. If you want grilled chicken on your caeser salad, let them know. If you want 1 of every desert, or 2 of your favorite, ask and don't be afraid, even if it's not on the menu.
You only have 1 excursion day this cruise. It's the only time you'll be off the boat. I highly suggest a Disney led excursion. Takes away all stress.
California in May should be warm, hazy on the ocean possibly. You may not expect to get sunburnt, but the marine layer just intensifies and magnifies the sun, so prepare. Pennsylvania sun does not equal California sun!
Go as formal as you like, or as non-formal. On our trip to Europe, the cruise was week 1 of 4. I was not going to lug around a tuxedo for 3 other weeks for 1 night on the boat. I wore dress khakis and a button up blue shirt. I was fine. You can rent a tux, but it's $$$.
YOU MUST go to Palo and YOU MUST get the chocolate souffle!! MUST!
Prepare to tip at Palo, only time on the boat really. But you should prepare to tip the watier, head waiter, and room service folks. There is a tipping list, but don't let it catch you off guard.
Bring some snacks. Skittles or M&M's will be a lot cheaper at Wal-Mar than the concessions before the evening shows. If your kids are nibblers you'll want some snacks for the shows.
Buy those $1 glow neckalce things for walking on the boat at night. They're cheap and fun.
Bring a small camera. Big cameras are nice, but to lug it around gets old. But the pictures they take are CRAZY expensive, so snap as many of your own as you can.
Splurge on something. Buy a Dooney & Burke handbag, or a nice picture frame, or an outfit before you leave. Something to make you feel regal. The ship will make you feel that way by itself, but splurging a little makes it oh so better.
If you're a wine drinker, you can bring bottles on or back from your excursion. You just have to drink it in your room. But we bought wine glasses, filled up and carried it out with us. Noone said anything.
Watch the sunsets if you can!
Let the kids roam if they want to. Everyone is friendly, they can't go anywhere. Let them stretch a little. In the evening, I suggest a comedy show, karaoke, or game show. They are so much fun. Just prepare, if you're a drinker it can get expensive. I don't drink much, so it was just fun to watch.

Ok, this is long, so finally...BE A KID!! Disney is amazing, no one grows up! Let your inner kid out. Be goofy. Do the funny faces, or poses, or dress up for Pixar night or whatever. Just enjoy it all. Soak it in. You'll be asking when can I book cruise #2!! Haha.

Thank you so much for the tips!!! So helpful. What is Pixar night? is there a theme that we know of we should bring stuff to dress up like?

Welcome to you, Myra and family. If you want me to add you to the roster on the first page of this thread, you can share names and/or ages if you wish and I will get you added. :goodvibes

Great suggestions from markheardjr. :thumbsup2 I just have a couple of comments in response and put them in blue.

Oooo, I have a very different opinion on this one. I highly suggest doing San Francisco on your own. We are there for around 12 hours, which is plenty of time for anyone to figure out what they want to do and to get back to the ship. I don't recall seeing anything that Disney offered for an excursion that wouldn't be just as easy, and cheaper to book on your own

Don't forget about tipping for room service--with three teens and several "at sea" days on the sailing, there are lots of opportunities for room service to be utilized. I keep a stash of $1's in a drawer nearest the door just for this purpose.

My DH takes more camera equipment than he does clothes

We carry wine on board with us as well, but we just ask for wine glasses at one of the bars, and they always give them with no problem. We order a fruit/cheese/cracker platter in late afternoon and enjoy that with our wine on the verandah. And we never had a problem taking our glass with us to dinner-they have no idea where it came from, your cabin or one of the bars.

If you think you would cruise again, be prepared to book while on board. There are some restrictions about how soon you must sail, etc., but you get discounts for booking as well as "on board credit", both vary depending on what you book. But it is far better to book on board, pay the deposit, get the savings while you are there than to get off the ship and decide a week later you wished you had booked and missed the savings. You can always cancel and get your deposit back if you decide not to cruise, and you can change your sail dates and/or ship if you see an itinerary you like better. And, if you think you are going to sail again, visit the rebooking desk on the ship early, do not wait until the last day as there will be a line.

Take a different colored highliter for each person in your group so that you can mark the Navigator with what everyone wants to do. Or, you can ask your cabin steward to leave you extra Navigators each day.

Don't try or expect to do it all--it can't be done. :scared:

Thank you so much for the tips!!! So helpful. What is Pixar night? is there a theme that we know of we should bring stuff to dress up like?

I have not experienced Pixar night myself. Normally the theme night is Pirates, held outside on the upper decks and they shoot fireworks off--lots of people go all out in dressing for this.

They can't do the fireworks in Alaska, and it seems they aren't doing them on the California Coast sailing either, so instead they do the Pixar theme night, which is held indoors in the atrium. From what I have read in trip reports, little ones seem to be the ones that dress for the Pixar party more than adults. I know we won't be doing anything special that night, but there are no little ones in our group either.

Sad...so there won't be any fireworks? Darn :(. Guess we'll have to go on a eastern cruise someday.

Well, I read that DCL has said it will be Pixar, not Pirates, and since that is inside, I am assuming no fireworks. It would be nice if I am wrong on that one.

You're probably right. This is our first Disney cruise so we're clueless lol. It will all be wonderful I'm sure :). Dd was asking tonight how many days are left, and when I said I think 129, she made a sad face lol. We so can't wait for this!

Hi all!
I just wanted to introduce ourselves. We just signed up for this cruise and it will be our first one! I am sailing with my son who is 5. I am loving all the tips from this board. I signed up for the Facebook group too. We are very excited! I'm hoping to meet up with other parents who are traveling with kids my son's age so he has a buddy for the kids club. Also, if there are other parents/grandparents traveling alone with kids, it would be great to try and organize a Palo visit together!

Welcome :). I have a son who will be turning 5 next month. Maybe our boys can team up :)

Hello
The FE group has had quite a few changes in the last week. I am sending out an updated list right now.

K. :)

Now that the holidays are over and I imagine everyone is looking a little more seriously at their plans for the cruise, I thought it might not be a bad idea to revisit a couple of things, like, where is everyone staying in San Diego before the cruise and are you finding any descent rates? We will have two nights in San Diego before sailing, arriving late Saturday. Hopefully this will help us ease into the time change.

I have the Hilton airport booked, only because it was the best rate I could find that offered two beds (me and SIL this leg of the trip) and was a brand name I recognized. Still entertaining other options if anyone has come up with something great.

As far as transportation, I guess a taxi will be what we take to get to the port and around town on Sunday.

Anyone else have firmed up plans you wish to share?

We are arriving on the 17th and are staying at the Holiday Inn Express near the airport. We want to go to the zoo and also look for a liquor store for cruise supplies!:)

We are arriving on the 18th and staying with my brother, sister in law and nephew (he's a week old today)!! Not sure how we're getting to the port yet.

Disboards meet at Promenade lounge on embarkation day at 3:00 sound okay or has one already been set up?
