May 19 - 24, 2014 San Diego to Vancouver

Jessica, did you go on the Halloween MR cruise last October? We were booked on that cruise but had to cancel when I got pregnant. I think I remember you from the few times I posted on that thread. I remember your daughter's name because I'm a huge Gilmore Girls fan :)

We love in SD too, but I'm clueless as to where to stay since we've only lived here for about a year. We used to live in the Bay Area, so we're excited to visit SF. We're hoping the Giants will be having a home game the day we're there :)

Does anyone have any recommendations on hotels in San Diego. Have never been to California and am looking for a clean place in a safe area.

I was born and raised in San Diego plus we have stayed in many hotels there when we visit, so I have a little insight.

It really depends on several things: how much you want to spend, if you want to be by port, if you're spending 1 night just for the cruise or you're staying for a few days, and the types of activities you want (if any). For us though, we always stay near Seaport Village, the Gaslamp, and the convention center (they are all in the same area). The Gaslamp has fabulous food and, if you're into it, nightlife. Seaport Village is a wonderful place to walk around, look in the little shops, and grab some lunch. What we do is use Priceline; however, I caution that my recommendation is only for a specific star rating and area. With that said, my recommendation is to Priceline 4-star Gaslamp/Convention Center and 4-star Gaslamp/Convention Center ONLY! There are other decent hotels around downtown/Shelter Island, but the possibilities of getting a not-so-great one is too high, so we stick with this area. We usually get the Manchester Grand Hyatt, the Marriott, Hotel Solamar, or the Omni. Our favorites are Solamar and the Omni, but they are all decent. We usually get it for $75/night (a bit higher on a peak date), but $75 has been our average. Don't forget though - average parking at these hotels is $30 per night, which can be rough. I have also seen people priceline mission valley and get the Sheraton for as little as $48. Anyway - here's a link to a list of hotels that priceline has by area and star level. This info can change so please be aware of that, but so far it has worked pretty well for us! Hmm...it's not letting me post the link. The website is "Biddingfortravel". Go to the site, click onto the California - San Diego link, and then the first link on that page is a hotel list. It lists them by area and star rating according to priceline.

So you are going to tell us some good places to eat as well, right? :)

Just thought I'd chime in on this, too. Depends what you like and what you're looking for (i.e. something good for kids, adults only, etc). My most favorite restaurant in all of San Diego is Strip Club Steakhouse in the Gaslamp. It's adult only, very neat atmosphere, and you stand around grills and chat and cook your own meat! I know, why go out to cook your own food, right? But it's a great experience! They also have fabulous side dishes. It is pricy though and it's 21 and over only. http://www.cohnrestaurants.com/menu-restaurants/gaslamp-strip-club/ Now, kids always love corvette diner. It's a 50's style diner and the waitresses play the part. They are sarcastic, grouchy, and they do things like throw straws at you. It's not negative though, it's really fun. It's also pretty close to the port as it is just beyond the San Diego airport downtown. http://www.cohnrestaurants.com/menu-restaurants/corvette-diner/ My husband's favorite is Hash House:http://www.hashhouseagogo.com/ Anyway, those are my top recommendations. Let me know if you need more!

On a side note, if you stay in the Gaslamp area there is a ghirardelli ice cream shop you can walk to with the kids!
P.S. If

Won't have to worry about parking or children on this trip. But, the Ghiradelli ice cream sounds wonderful!:thumbsup2 Thanks for the suggestions.

I've never been good with introductions but I'll do my best. I'm certainly not as good as that weirdo who posted just before me. I must say that screen name does look oddly familiar though...

Anyway, we are Steve (I won't post my age as I'm turning old this year), DW Amy (I won't post hers as she will kill me), and DD Emma (8 as of the sailing).

This will be our fifth Disney cruise as well - one prior sailing on the Wonder and three on the Magic. I grew up near San Francisco and lived there into adulthood. I don't live too far from there now (globally speaking) and go there often so I can probably help with things to do in port if anyone has questions.

We have done a lot of touristy things in San Diego and Vancouver too so I can maybe help with some advice.

PS - Jessica, we hope to see you in two weeks when we are down there! :3dglasses

Holy guacamole! Was that coincidence or have you been watching the board waiting for me to post? I can't believe they let Riff-Raff like you on here! :rotfl:

I emailed you about Disneyland in a couple of weeks :flower3:

Yup - that was us! Did you have the baby yet? How funny that we wound up on the same sailing again! Lorelai just turned 1 in January and she is growing so fast! I'll find a good pic or two to post :)

Yes, I can ditto what Vow Renewal13 has said--no kids, no parking. Just me and my SIL on this leg of the trip and we are flying in on Saturday and then boarding the ship on Monday. Hopefully this will give us a little bit of a jump on the time change from the East Coast. Love seafood, Mexican and good steak. Thanks for your suggestions and ideas and any others you have will be very welcome as well. I know it is time consuming to put all this info and the links in writing, and it is appreciated.

I had the baby in November. I would have been 36 weeks pregnant on that cruise lol. She'll be 4 months old next week. She's such a great baby, I'll see if I can figure out how to post pics too.

My pleasure - any time :)

I forgot to mention one of my other favorites - Phil's BBQ. It's downtown also, but it's near the sports arena. Best BBQ in town. Not as good as the midwest proper, but it's one of my favorites! Let me know any other kinds of food you like and I'll be happy to give my 2 cents :thumbsup2

Hmm. I do not like Seafood so I can't really recommend, but I hear there's a lot of good seafood in San Diego. I did have a "real" tuna fish sandwich at the little restaurant over the water in Seaport Village once - it was made from fresh tuna, and it was really good. Otherwise, the only other things I know about are super fancy, super expensive romantic evening type places. Mexican food is hard too. All of the "good" Mexican food in San Diego comes from little whole in the wall places. My mother-in-law likes Casa De Pico. It's at the Grossmont mall and the food is descent. Chips could be better though. Honestly, I think she likes the margaritas more than anything, lol. They're gigantic!!

Do we need to raise our standards???

Ha ha! YES! :rotfl2:

Just kidding! Steve is the friend I mentioned from a previous cruise. He IS Riff-Raff, but still, he's good people :thumbsup2

That's fabulous! What did you name her? Something from Gilmore Girls like us? I can't wait to see pictures!

I've never considered myself riff-raff...but then I did just return from a Carnival cruise and felt right at home. Aww man, what's happened to me?!?

In the eight months I lived in San Diego, I never found a good Mexican restaurant. My co-workers there said it's because the food down there is too authentic and that I should stick to Chevy's and El Torito. Maybe they were right.

A previous post had some good suggestions for San Francisco but I also wanted to say the Walt Disney Family Museum in the Presidio is excellent. A walk across the Golden Gate Bridge on a clear day is fantastic as well but I'm pretty sure there are only two clear days a year and they are usually in August.

Pier 39 is a very touristy place to go but there is a lot there to do including taking a ferry out to Alcatraz, taking a bay cruise, or visiting the aquarium.

And if you had so much in the 60's that you can't remember them at all, a nice stroll through Haight-Ashbury might be for you. Just don't try to bring any souvenirs you buy from there on the ship with you!

Lol, I'm such a newbie...I have to have at least 10 posts before I can post a pic...here's one.

Here's a pic of my two girls...I'll find a better one of the baby tomorrow...

Does anyone know if while sailing up the California coast if you can see the coastline during the day or is the ship too far out at sea? Gonna ask on FB as well.

The ship is too far out to sea to see the coastline. You'll be able to make out that their is land but nothing distinguishable.

Cute picture Heather! Have you told your older daughter about the Oceaneer Club yet? How old will she be at the time of sailing? I'm always on the lookout for a cruise buddy for my DD!

-steve

Thanks Steve :). ODD will turn 7 in February, and I'm sure she'd love a cruise buddy too!

How sweet, Heather. I can't wait to see more photos! Here are some pics of Lorelai over the last 8 months:

I remember when our kids were young and cute. Now there in college and not so cute. How time goes by.

Hi everyone!

My DD and I are 80% sure we're going on this cruise. We're from Orange County, CA...and it would be a fun trip for DD and I before she officially starts kindergarten in our very strict school district (ie, can't pull her out of school anymore).

It'd be fun to meet up with other kids her age. She'll be almost 5 at the time of this cruise.

Since it looks like there's a bunch of west-coasters on this cruise, we'd all be on the same time schedule :thumbsup2 The *hardest* part for us about cruising on the East Coast is the 3 hour time difference. DD doesn't get tired until 2am when we cruise out of Orlando....

Taaren--I've seen you on the DVC boards--never knew you moved to Nor Cal? I thought you were in Hawaii (based on some of your Aulani recs). Have fun on the cruise!
