May 14, 2011 - Eastbound TransAtlantic

Hannah is getting her work the week prior to us leaving and her teacher will be giving her the final tests so that she can have her report card ready before we leave. When we return school will be out and she will have done all of her work ahead of time and already taken all final testing. She can cruise with no worries of school.

We've discussed the absence with Sophia's teacher and she is very supportive. God bless her! I am doubtful that we'll have homework. However, Sophia LOVES to read, so she might be interested in a kid's chapter book exchange if we can get one going.

Hello Susan we would love to go geocaching as a small group. I hope to try to find one at each port.

Welcome Susan and Family! Nice to see more kids joining us.

The study group that Amada mentioned sounds like a great idea, however, Hunter can be easily distracted so I doubt he'd get anything accomplished. Thankfully, Hunter's teachers have agreed to provide the units he will be responsible for at the beginning of May. We will work to get a lot of it done before the cruise but, whatever he doesn't finish, we will bring with us. We've already dicussed the rules with him regarding study time while on the cruise: at least an hour in the morning will be dedicated to his studies and at least a half hour of reading every day. He won't be able to leave the stateroom until his work is complete so he'll probably do it first thing in the morning.

Hello All,

We (Ben, Trisha, Alexandra (DD6), Zachary (DS4)) will be joining you on this cruise -- as well as doing the back-to-back with the Med cruise...

We did the Transatlantic and Med back-to-back in September 2010 and loved it so much -- we have signed up for more!!

Trisha

Welcome to all our new cruisers.

sound like the ship is getting fuller by the day.

Welcome! Happy to see some more young kids sailing...hoping Brayden (DS4) will get to make some friends to go to the kids club with him for a short time each day.

I've heard that Barcelona is famous for pick-pocketing. I suppose that means we should leave the passport on the ship and have money in a money belt or something. Am I the only worry wart on the ship? Any ideas out there about special precautions we should take? Have any of you seasoned cruisers seen or experienced crime in Barcelona?

I don't think you will find it worse than any other city with loads of tourists. If you take sensible precautions like keeping your valuables safely on your person, and avoid unlit areas at night you should be ok.
There are lots of horror stories on the web about the Ramblas but our experience was that it was no different to Oxford Street, Princess Street or Sauchiehall Street on a busy day!:)

No I am worried about that, too. Especially, since I am traveling solo.
I bought a small pouch that straps around my waist under my clothes.

I was also looking at the racktrap.com( a pouch for inside your bra.

Barcelona is famous for pick pockets. Yes, there is a possibility in other large cities, but Barcelona has a reputation for this. Las Ramblas, the metro, and any other crowded location that you might be in provide opportunity. However, if you are smart about it, you should not really have any problems. 1)don't carry anything in your back pockets; 2)if you carry a bag of ANY type, make sure that you carry it on your front side or if it has to be on your back, make sure someone in your group lags behind so that they can watch the bag (and nothing else). 3) don't carry more stuff than you need, i.e. 3 credit cards or excess cash 4) make a plan to be aware of your surroundings and to not put yourself in a situation that looks sketchy 5)don't walk around with your head stuck in your cell phone. I took the Med cruise in 2007. There were actually places in Italy where I felt more uncomfortable than I did in Barcelona. We stayed in a hotel right on Las Ramblas and would do it again without hesitation. Don't let the worry of these problems take away from enjoying the city because I found it truly amazing (of course, there are others on the board who had a completely opposite opinion....finding it dirty, crowded, etc). Plan to be safe and you should have a great time.

The city is fine. but keeping a copy of CCs and passport is good sense.

Hi Everyone,

We are back for the Westbound having done the Eastbound last september.

Flying out a week early so that we can do the 4 night on the Disney Dream, have just completed our pre cruise documentation.

Regards

Chris & Yvonne

We have a 12:45 flight booked to Amsterdam. I'm trying to check in online now, and it's telling me that flight is too early, then won't let me choose Disney transfers.

Does anyone else have a flight booked this early? If so- do I have to call Disney to arrange an earlier transfer, or get a cab. Last year for the Med, we did use a taxi service.

Thanks.

Our flight is at 9:15 that morning, so no Disney transfers for us either. However I have been reassured that we should be able to leave the ship at 5 am, guessing we need to get a taxi. Suppose we will be arranging that with someone that Friday while in Barcelona.

We too are booked with DCL points, however they did tell me I could have bought tranfers, but my flights are way too early. Hope we don't end up having any problems.

I am still working on designing (if you call it that) the name tags for the lanyards. For those that post on the board, it is easy....show the real name and in smaller print, show the board name.

For additional people in the travel party, I was considering putting a number behind the board name. For additional party members, just increase the number by one. So for anyone else traveling with me it would show the real name and the board name as sbassgva(2).

Also, I would like input from those who are traveling with children. Would you like name tags made for the kids, or not?

Thanks for any thoughts.

We are!!! That sounds better than spending all night shopping the airport mall! LOL:rolleyes1

I booked my airfare with Disney. The price was just so much better than I could get on my own. Any one flying down the night before and staying at the Hyatt MCO? We could have a dismeet?

Will be joining this voyage, we are going on the Dream prior to this voyage. Counting the days!!!!

Regards

Chris & Yvonne
