Pardon my ignorance....but what do you mean by sponges??? the kind we clean with or are they some kind of food to eat? I just don't have a clue!
YES, I have seen the diving for the cross...used to watch it with my grandmother every year on her "Greek TV station". I would love to visit there....sounds like a road trip!![]()

I have been gone all day, so I am sure that this has been answered, but real sponges are living animals. The sponge is the "shell" of the animal that lives inside. They live on the bottom of the ocean, and divers in the old kind of dive suits (big helmet and hoses going down from the boat) used to dive for them in the warm waters off of Tarpon Springs.
Natural sponges are the absolute BEST sponges, and until they fished them dry in the gulf, it was a booming business for the Greek community there.
