OMG! I remember being about 5 or 6 years old and my friend and I made up this really fun game. We called it "department store". In our backyard, there were several very nicely trimmed privet bushes--they were in a cube shape. My friend and I realized that if we sat down in one of those bushes, it felt just like sitting in a big easy chair, with armrests, etc. So we decided that each bush was a different section of the department store (shoes, dresses, nightgowns, underwear) and in order to buy something you had to sit down in the "chair" and the "clerk" would come up and wait on you. I don't know how long we were playing it before my mom saw us and you can imagine what happened next!
The thing is, I can clearly remember that we had no idea that what we were doing was destructive--it never entered my mind that the bushes were being ruined! We were just having a whole lot of fun! Of course, that was not how my mother saw it

--I'm sure her words were something to the effect of "What are you doing??? I can't believe you'd ruin my bushes!!! What were you thinking???" I don't blame her for thinking that, either.
But I'm so glad I've been able to remember that incident and remember that I truly didn't comprehend what I was doing. It helped me a lot in the years I was teaching, to not get quite so upset at some of the things the kids would get into. Kids just don't think like adults--at least I know I didn't!
In fact, now that I think about it I STILL do stuff like that! Some things don't change, I guess!
