Mash

M*A*S*H was definitely one of the all-time classics. It was part of a trend of TV programmes that broke new ground in a number of ways, especially with the mix of comedy and pathos, and the interlinking and overlapping plot threads. I can understand how many posters regret that some actors moved on, and those that took their place weren't quite up to the same level, but at least these changes in the cast were in keeping with what happens in a war zone.

I was fortunate enough to see the show when it was first aired, and I never seem to get tired of seeing reruns. Not only that, we have the DVDS at home so that we can run some of our old favourites. Not all the shows are as good - after all, they were written by different people, and you can't always get things right - but all of them are worth seeing.

By the way - when the TV series was first airing, a series of pocketbooks began to come out, which I snapped up immediately. It began of course with the original MASH. It was followed by "MASH goes to Maine", about how Hawkeye returns home. Then came almost a dozen, each about Hawkeye, Trapper, Hot Lips, Radar and company going to different destinations: Hollywood, San Francisco, Las Vegas, New Orleans, Texas, Miami, Montreal, Paris, London, Morocco, Vienna and Moscow. All were pretty much written with the same basic plot line: the group goes somewhere, ends up in ridiculous difficulties, outwit some bad guy, and a happy end all around. Definitely not great literature, but a nice way to pass an afternoon.
