Marie Osmond's son: suicide because he was gay?

I know (there are about 3 of them in my town), but it was mostly funded by the Mormon church of Utah.

But that's where the church headquarters is located, in Salt Lake City. All funding for anything anywhere in the world comes from there, regardless if it is something in Utah, California, or beyond. It doesn't matter.

I'm just saying what I heard on the news. Honestly, I didn't know that because they don't cover it on the news. Sorry if I offended you.

Nah, I don't get offended easily unless something is a slam at me personally.:thumbsup2 We had Baptist churches here in the South pooling money into the Prop 8 thing (and that church is worse than the Mormon one). I guess it just all depends. Myself, I think the idea behind Prop 8 is horrific and should be overturned. Guess that ain't happening though...

Oh, none taken, I was just wondering! :goodvibes The way I see it, God loves us no matter what, and in the end, He determines our eternal fate, so why should man constantly be shoving right/wrong in our faces and saying "You'll pay for this someday!"? We're not God, how should we know what's truly acceptable?:confused3

:thumbsup2

If only poor Michael felt that way.:sad1:

One of the main reasons that it probably won't is because the judge came out as a homosexual. If he does try to overturn it, the "Yes On 8" people will argue that he did it due to ulterior motives.

I know. Sometimes religion really irks me. They take things and bend and shape it to what they, the church, thinks is right. It's not right to condemn someone for who they are. It's unfair, and I think God (if you, as in any person, believes in God) is sitting up there shaking His head saying WHAT ARE YOU DOING??? THAT'S WRONG!!:sad2:

Whatever the reason for his untimely death, it is painstakingly sad. And Another very sad reminder that rich and poor, smart and uneducated, any relig. and any color, suicidal thoughts/behaviors reach thru all and affects many :sad1: Devastating across the board.

HUG your family today! :flower3:

Maybe someone who is part of the Mormon faith can answer this:

I thought that I had read that Marie pulled away from the Mormon church when she divorced. That the church did not recognize the divorce or something like that ( I apologize, I don't know a lot about the faith and don't really know how to phrase that part).

From everything that has ever been said or written about the Osmond family, I cannot imagine their not accepting a child of the family regardless of his/her sexual orientation or anything else about them. I understand the church may have been "anti-gay", so are most of my faith; but that doesn't mean my family would not accept any one for being gay or try to change them or whatever. The Osmonds have always seemed to be a loving, close family that stand by each other and love each other unconditionally.

Roseann Barr is an obnoxious loud mouth and needs to learn when to keep her mouth shut.

ITA!

TC:cool1:

I can't stand Rosanne Barr, but I do think she was saying what many people were already speculating. I think it was on magazine covers last week....(or maybe I read it on another forum)....

We haven't heard anything from Roseanne for quite a while, I guess she needed some attention. I'm surprised she didn't take her opportunity when Jett Travolta died.

The woman is vile.

I need to go add her voice to the "nails on a chalkboard" thread.

It's not that we don't recognize divorce, it's that we more of discourage it. :flower3: In our church, we believe that marriage lasts forever, and to divorce is pretty much unthinkable. It happens, though- one of my best friends, his dad has been married THREE TIMES and is still active in the church. But if you do divorce, the church doesn't excommunicate you or anything.

And your point?

I don't find homosexuality to be right.

Now imagine you have a son that is gay and he knows how you feel.

I get the impression that Roseanne spoke because she has some knowledge of the situation. She has never been one to hold her thougts.

Roseanne is sick and a b****. I am Mormon. I support equal rights for all people, including homosexuals. To group our entire church into one hatemongering lump shows that woman's ignorance. :sad2:

And anyone else who shares a bigoted view of my church similar to that vile woman's, read this first-

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/11/11/national/main5612735.shtml

You've been mormon for what, 6 months now?

I was a mormon for several years, and my partner for two decades. Yes, we are gay mormons.

Are there accepting people in the church? Of course. At the same time the church as a whole is VERY anti-gay. People are often excommunicated from the church for being found out as gay. The mormon church also supports and uses "reparative therapy" to try and stop people from "acting gay".

Reparative therapy has been proven to be more harmful psychologically than anything else, and is a disgusting practice. MANY recipients end their lives afterwards.

While I believe that Rosanne was well-intentioned and drawing attention to a serious problem, she should not have used Marie Osmond's recent tragedy as the example. Let Marie grieve in peace. There are plenty of parents who have come forward to talk about the suicide of their child due to anti-gay sentiment or discrimination.

She needs to mind her own business..:sad2: Doesn't the family have enough going on without Roseanne playing "armchair psychiatrist"?

I feel bad for that poor kid! He must have really been struggling. And of course my heart goes out to Marie Osmond. It sounds like she was supportive of her children.

Roseanne was out of line at making those comments right now. I'm not saying that her opinion is wrong. I agree with some of her comments. I know there are groups who would throw their children to the wolves if they found out they were gay. But Roseanne picked a bad time to make those comments. I'm sure those words really hurt Marie Osmond right now.

Resident Mormon checking in; I even live in Utah and *gasp* went to BYU. You could say I am a "Molly Mormon" (a term used in these parts for the churchy goody-goodies), but alas, I don't know how to make green jello, do not have 12.5 kids, or think that the University of Utah is the devil's school. ;)

With that being said, the Church will recognize divorce but with a heavy heart. From childhood or whenever you begin to learn about our beliefs, we're taught that one of the most important decisions you make in life is who, when, and where you marry. It is not a decision to made lightly as it is a sacred thing. However, there are marriages where there is abuse, fraud, deception, etc and (I remember reading this once) whenever a person's dignity has been trampled upon, a divorce is certainly supported (happened to my brother). It's usually a case-by-case basis. (Clear as mud?)I don't know Marie Osmond's story, but I wanted to offer some back-up to Soarin's comments.

I don't believe in kicking someone when they are down and Marie Osmond is surely down right now.

However homosexual youth are the second largest group to commit suicide. Anyone who has ever uttered publicly an anti gay comment, slur or not, can take ownership in contributing to the existance of that statistic.

Now THAT is harsh. And true.

I was gonna say... they might've funded it, but I doubt many of the church leaders actually got out there and voted!:rotfl2: Seems they never do! They gave money but I bet that was where it stopped.

Now as far as churches go... you want to see some real hatemongering bigots, come to my hometown and I'll take you to the local Southern Baptist church. :scared1: Yikes!!! No one would ever criticize the LDS church again after spending five minutes with the brand of Baptists in my area.

Wow, you want us to be tolerant of the LDS but have no problem slamming another religion. Not very nice.

For the record, I am an atheist and do not have a dog in this fight but it is a fact the the LDS actively funded and campaigned for Prop 8.
